Tam, Jade and Franky's European Adventure

Think you like polishing profit in vehicles
Well having some mechanical knowledge and being a good haggler has helped over the years

I'm more comfortable around older vehicles

12.7 and above is fully charged, always higher when they first come of charge.
Only real test is to see what happens under load.

That just does a CCA test useless for testing a leisure battery.

I think it does more than a CCA (cold cranking amps) test as it applies a known load to the battery for as long as you hold the test switch down,
I agree it is designed for a "standard" lead acid starter battery however if it is used on a lead acid leisure battery it will soon show if the battery is knackered - I have used it on both starter & leisure lead acid batteries and found it to be fine :)

Well I finally got a phone call from dvla today regarding my application to change the weight and taxation class on v5

The lady says the plates on van have different chassis number to the one on the v5

For a minute i panicked and thought I'd bought a stolen van
Then she says the van says zfa.......
And the v5 says zpa........

I said well that's obviously a dvla bodies error back in 2004 when it was first registered isn't it along with the wrong bloody taxation class
Honestly they have one job too do that's it.
So I said now you've sorted that does that mean it's taxed from today as I wanted away this weekend.
She says no I just check the documents it now goes in to a pile to be processed probably sometime next week

You couldn't make it up

So looks like I'm not getting away this weekend :(

But in other news ...I bought a toad today

Well one for the bike anyway:)
Couldn't resist it was only a tenner on gumtree.
Handy for jade , fishing gear , and shopping etc and it folds flat for storage ....only weighs about 10kg

There's other bars that fit on sides to protect wheels etc and a wheel and handle so you can push it but not sure I'll need those for my use

Bless her, you'll be cycling along while she gives it the Royal wave from her carriage!

To test a lesiure battery properly you need to do a controlled test over many hours.
Me finger would drop off.

zfa.......
It's a Fiat then ?

Want some led flashing lights on the back for some of the t***s driving about these days over there.

I can see it now!!!

You furiously peddling up a hill,, jade grinning at everyone as she rolls past, five finger death punch blaring out from the speakers in jades carriage! What a sight !!! Lol

I think my 100 a/h starter battery is a bit suspect, if I test it as I would a leisure battery (a known load for a period of time) being a starter battery would it give a true indercation of the batterys state.

Aye to be honest I was gonna say that too the woman but I don't think she would have a clue what the letters stand for.

Don't think I'll use the trailer here anyway it's more for use when travelling.
I don't even use the bike here unless I was somewhere with cycle paths

Yes - I believe it would! but better to use a battery load tester as shown in post #6707

Look - a flooded lead acid battery - be it starter or leisure is basically the same "beast"

The difference being in the number & thickness of the plates thus giving the individual characteristics :-

Car (starter) battery contains many thin plates to give a larger total surface area to assist with high starting currents but does not respond well to long continual "drain"

Leisure batteries have less plates but they are thicker so more robust so respond well to a longer constant "drain" on them but are not designed for the high currents of starting an engine as excessively high currents cause the thicker plates to heat and so may warp or buckle

However they are both flooded lead acid batteries and (provided they are kept topped up with distilled water and charged/discharged in the way they were designed) will over time generally fail because of the same problems - a similar process as electroplating - ie the +ve plates will over time lose their lead to the -ve plates thus reducing the capacity of the battery and this also contribute to a "sludge" depositing in the bottom of each cell which may cause the cell to effectively "short out" giving a dead cell and thereby causing the battery to fail!

How do I know this? - I spent over a year of my life as a "battery room watchkeeper" looking after the supply, charging, servicing & maintenance of up to 300 batteries for aircraft, motor transport and ground equipment at any given time so became well versed in the life cycle of lead acid (and alkaline) batteries!

What do I know about modern Lithion Ion batteries? - zilch!! :)

No by the time we got home it was after 9pm so it was just some tea and chill out for a couple of hours before bed
It's easier to give it a good clean while empty and then hopefully move into it in a couple of days. Also need to sort the power and the pump so I have lights and working water pressure etc.

But if I get it cleaned today i may go back to sleeping in it at least because jade doesn't like this not getting in the same room as me.
And i can't risk her doing more damage in here I don't want fallouts with mum when she gets home.
Tam, be aware the water pump connections from the van, if it is an in tank one, are blue and brown cables, the blue being the live one on Hymers. Reich pumps also come with blue and brown cables but I found that I got increased system pressure when van Blue cable (+) was connected to pump brown cable.

Another observation is the wipers appear to be shorter than they could be. Cant remember the size of mine but they almost touch end to end which gives a bigger clearing sweep. I can measure if you want?
