Tam & co the great winter escape

Yes i have to say my limited experience with Citroen was not good , i have had several Renault ( approx 20 - 25 ) though which were all miles better .. not had one that caused me any big issues. ...several Peugeot too
A company I worked for had a couple of Peugeot 406's they used to self destruct OK when new but after a couple of years around 60k bits used to just start falling off them. Must run a close 2nd to Rover on poor build quality.

Always quite liked French cars, thought them to be stylish and a bit quirky, had a 205GTi then a 405SRi did 120k miles never a problem, then 405 diesel estate, a couple of xantia estates, a 508 estate with panoramic roof, none of them gave me any major problems ...... wish I still had the 205 :giggle:

I cheeted and googled it. C5was the last citroen with it

2005

Yes, I absolutely loved the ride in my Citroen C5 - kept it for years and nothing since (Merc & Jag) for smooth magic carpet-like ride. :giggle:
I loved my C5, eventually. I had one of the first in the UK and it was the petrol engine version. All the bells and whistles you’d get on a car today, but the electronics were a mess. Always breaking down and the engine liked to cut out cruising on motorways. Always in the garage being updated and I think I debugged the electrics for them. Eventually I rejected it and got the diesel. The suspension came in handy more than once on lumber tracks in Kielder Forest.

My C5 was a diesel and don't recall any significant issues during 7 years of ownership. :giggle:

But yes, the suspension was magic, how it could be pumped right up to give crazy high ground clearance at low speed. Worked a treat in floods, as well as across fields and rough tracks. (y)

I had my boat moored up on the quay across the road from the Methana sulphur pool for several years. One got used to the smell after a while. There was a hot spring out of the rocks into the sea at the end of the quay where we were swimming on New Year's Day one year. The sulphur kept the bottom of the boat growth-free - no antifouling needed.

The harbour at Port William on Luce Bay stinks something rotten of sulphur. I don't know if there's a spring or if it's just the seaweed decomposing, but it fair catches your throat !

As a student I drove mini cabs - Renault 8s and 10s. The taxi rank cars were Renault 16s which were brand new at the time and very impressive. Loved my 4L and went to France camping in it. I was surprised one morning to find my French neighbour from the next tent full length underneath my car - It's not the same as mine he said! He had a 4 too but not a 4L. My friends from British Leyland laughed themselves silly when they inspected it, but it was different when they wanted a fridge moving. I sold mine to a couple going to Spain after it had failed its MoT and I cried when it went!

I had a Xantia 1.9 diesel non turbo. Struggled to pull the skin off a rice pudding. The ride height adjuster failed and the back end was about 18 inches higher than the front driving it down the road. Even the smallest of bumps made it bounce about 10 times with huge movement up and down - hilarious journey. A company car soon departed afterwards

Can we PLEASE get back to the holiday snaps and dogs ... I'm getting withdrawal symptoms! o_O

Just reminded me what the kids used to call the Citreon DS .......oh look a chocolate mouse! Remember those white chocolate mice you could buy from the sweet shop. Brilliant comparison.

When I met John 18 years ago he owned three XMs, a Xantia, a BX estate - and a 1974 DSpecial. Bit of a Citroën fan, he's had several 2CVs, Ami, DS Safari, and now drives a 22 Yr old Xsara (passed its MOT yesterday without a single advisory). He still has the DSpecial and is restoring it to its former glory. So far it's cost over £8,000 and taken about ten years of hard graft when he can spare a few hours. He's 90 in April and determined to finish the job. We're also looking forward to getting back to France for the summer, in our 22 Yr old Hymer, bought just before Covid. Can't wait to return to our favourite site in Antibes and meet all our old friends.
