Tam & co the great winter escape

Don’t they smell of Sulpher?
Very slightly. The ones i saw at methana last year were really strong theres no way id have got in them but you don't notice the smell on this one its really faint. Can't taste it either surprisingly.

About forty three years ago I rode in the back of one of those Citroen DS’s to a wedding in the countryside north east of Paris. I still remember the exceptionally smooth ride.

Not many people know that. Personally I’d rather have the Citroen van with the corrugated iron sides!!
They were considered one of the top luxury cars in france ... Popular in italy too i think .

The Citroen H van wasn't quite as refined 🤣

This Car was so ahead of its time, l think many people thought of it has an oddity when in fact it was an engineering marvel compared to anything else.
Fantastic cars, ride quality was the best in the world, I think the last one with that hydraulic oil suspension was the Citroen XM, my uncle had 3 of those , big car, fantastic to drive

and some things a pain in the a*se to work on!

Strange thing with their suspension, the faster you drove over bumps, the smoother the ride. (handy for changing tyres too)

Citroen fitters needed flat arms,,BUSBY 😁😊

Got to drive a brand new ds not long after passing my test in a Hillman imp. Brake was a little button thing on the floor and the steering wheel just attached by a single spoke. Nearly crashed the thing into a traffic island.
The brakes started to play up not long after when the owner was in Spain with no Spanish language.

Liking the DS and being into my Hot Rods and custom cars. This I would love to own. (y)

Wasnt the BX the last one with hydropneumatic suspension?

It made me throw up on my first trip to France. The family I was staying with (I was 16) picked us up at Orly airport and I threw up on the way to Nantes. So although I like the car I don't like riding in it. Architect Alison Smithon liked it so much she wrote a whole book about her travels in one - 'AS in DS'

I loved my C5, eventually. I had one of the first in the UK and it was the petrol engine version. All the bells and whistles you’d get on a car today, but the electronics were a mess. Always breaking down and the engine liked to cut out cruising on motorways. Always in the garage being updated and I think I debugged the electrics for them. Eventually I rejected it and got the diesel. The suspension came in handy more than once on lumber tracks in Kielder Forest.

My pal had a Citroen GS, I went to give him a hand to do a service on it, what a nightmare it was to change the spark plugs on the flat four engine !

The easiest way was to remove the grill and headlights! Although changing break pads was easier as they were inboard under the bonnet. Superb ride though.

They were ahead of their time. Too far ahead of their time. Great areodynamics but tiny little engine.
My dad had one. It wasn't great in terms of reliability. He was glad to be shut of it even though we all loved it.

Whilst on the subject on french cars, can l please have a Citroen H van or a Renault Dauphine. (y)

Just so you know i haven't spent the whole morning in the hot spring we did have a walk to find the memorial statue etc. Other than that we have been in the spring all morning ...i dont think ive ever felt so clean . Milo loves it he's been in with me most of the time. Jade and ela have had the odd paddle but theyre more interested in pulling all the grass out of the banking and digging holes. Ladies be warned this post has appendage 🤣🤣

The French have made some great innovations with cars shame they never grasped the idea that a car needs to be driven for more than a few miles without breaking down.
Yes i have to say my limited experience with Citroen was not good , i have had several Renault ( approx 20 - 25 ) though which were all miles better .. not had one that caused me any big issues. ...several Peugeot too

I have to admit, I also found a loaded Safari, more to my liking. (I'll have to look up the book, great title!)

I had my boat moored up on the quay across the road from the Methana sulphur pool for several years. One got used to the smell after a while. There was a hot spring out of the rocks into the sea at the end of the quay where we were swimming on New Year's Day one year. The sulphur kept the bottom of the boat growth-free - no antifouling needed.
