Tam & co the great winter escape

If you get underneath the van at the back, behind the rear bumper, can you get better access?
No

I'll have to remove the whole bumper . Which is my concern as it appears to be sikaflexed to the body.

Try changing the bulbs before doing anything drastic. I've had similar faults with a dodgy tail/brake light bulb.

Absolutely, that is what I would do, we had one that was always working loose for some reason.

If you have access to the bulb fittings how about putting a temporary earth from each bulb holder in turn to a good earth you may find which it is without removing the rear skirts.

Can you get inventive and thread an new earth through the bumper using a straighted wire coathanger ?

🤦‍♂️ I wish you guys would read the previous posts.

I have tried and tested every other option before i got to this point.

Jeez, I wish folks would read the history on this earthing topic! It must be soo frustrating for you Tam!

It is 😁

I know folk are trying to help ...but im no daft eh ...i have exhausted the other options.

The bumper needs removed and the wiring behind it checked and probably new connections.

If you park close to a low invisible fence then drive quickly away you will find it comes away very easily. Mine did 🤬
I think thats happened before which is why theres now an issue. When i look back the previous mot comments it reports rear bumper damage a few years back so its been tampered with. And i suspect there will be a broken or rusty connection behind there.

Tam try putting a wire down the side of the offending bulb and the other end to to the chassis and see if it solves the problem temporarily

Stop messing about on here Tam and get outside and sort the ruddy thing then this lot can move onto the next discussion point! 😄

It's got towbar wiring, hang a trailer board on the back, job done :rofl::rofl:

So heres where im at .

The right hand side all works fine . Theres 2 seperate looms running from the front to the back one for each side.

On the left hand side indicator and reverse lamp works fine ( on their own) if i put the side lights on then both the side light and brake light come on and so does the indicator ...if i put indicator on at the same time the indicator bulb does not flash but the sidelight does.

If i remove the earth wire to the indicator the sidelight works. Reconnect it and it doesnt. All the earth wires go to one common source and then join the earth lead coming from the front here

Black is the earth, blue indicator, grey reverse, red brake , and yellow sidelights. All the connections actually look fine but you can see on the photo that theres been an earth issue here before and they've moved the earths from the top light to the middle. Whether it solved the problem then or not who knows but it has returned now. I will have to check the original earth feed with a multimeter then take it from there . Typically its now started raining.

Unfortunately not as that's how i discovered the problem. Trailer board isnt working properly either as its picking up the fault. I disconnected all the towbar wiring yesterday to make sure that wasn't creating the issue.

Best to cut all the connectors off and crimp new ones on, be wary of any wires with kinks in them it's not uncommon for the wire to break inside the insulation, I even had that happen on a 3 core mains cable.
Yeah and theres a lot of kinks in them ...wires have been bent back on itself and cable tied tight. Asking for trouble. I think im going to take all the seperate connections off till i get the main tail light indicator etc working fine then ill reconnect the cables that run to the side markers and number plate lights etc . If not getting a good earth where it comes off the loom ill run a new one to the chassis. That should hopefully sort it.

Might as well do it properly, you don't want to look like a Pi-key in ROI.
Yeah its just time consuming. But the front one needs doing too. Id planned to get them done in Portugal like i did with the hymer. But while its off i might aswell do it

Well thats my work for the next few days sorted lol. Ill need to take the scooter rack off again for now till i strip all the bumpers off .

This side is coming off too as someone has been playing with sikaflex ....badly

But not today sadly as raining ☹️

You may be better off stripping out all that cable (some looks very stiff and liable to fracturing like Lenny already said) I ain't sure that it automotive grade wiring anyway judging by the really severe links. Maybe take the new cable back to an accessible place for the future. It's never easier than when you've got it in pieces anyway.🤔
