Tam & co the great winter escape

I suppose its a bit like Blackpool. You have to go once, then never ever again as far as we are concerned. Benidorm is preceded by its reputation so we are never ever likely to go there but if others want to go then please fill your boots!

I have an electrical fault on the taillights on the motorhome and its driving me crazy .... been at it nearly 3 hours now and no further forward . Put sidelights on and i have side , brake and indicator all on faintly on the one side . And i can't get in to the wires behind the lamp to chevk ..ive had all the towbar cables etc discontented to rule that out ..at somepoint its had rear bumper damage and god knows how they have fitted it all back on ...i hate electrics

Lenny HB you need a trip to Fiffe
Tam calling Lenny HB ... Better go into hiding!!! 😆

Yeah i know its a bad earth its trying to find it without breaking the rear bumper thats the issue. It seems to have been glued on 🤦‍♂️

I can take the earth wire of the stop/tail lights and they still come on ...so obviously they are earthing each other . Must be something wrong behind the light fittings that are bolted to the bumper from the rear

DVLA Update: hours spent wasted on DVLA Bot "Help Assistant"
I want to sell a stored classic car that has been Sorned since 2007, & Retain Personal Number Plate.
The car is in storage condition all fluids drained, so a non starter.
New buyer accepts this and wants to collect on a low loader.
DVLA website says " You cannot save personal plate until the vehicle is taxed, fill in form V317 and send in by post along with V5"
I used the Bot Assistant to try and get through to a human being:banghead::banghead:
It takes all my details and then says "all assistants are busy right now, do not continue typing as you may lose your position in the Queue" "An assistant will be with you shortly, please wait"
Then half an hour later it times out, and tells me "your session has timed out, please try again between 0800 & 1900 mon-fri"
Well I have tried 3 times now, each time it tells me to hang on for an assistant, all are busy right now.
Then I hear a ping, and it says you cannot retain your personal plate until the vehicle is taxed!:banghead::swear:

Knowing what Tam wants to do in changing all the registered details of The Vario, except the chassis & engine number, I wish him more luck than I have had today.

Wife said " it may be quicker to drive to Newport and go in and see them face to face", bless her eh?:inlove:

Personally I would tax it on line move the private plate then sorn again on line.
I know it will cost a months tax but that is a small price to pay to avoid dvla intervention.

The difficulty you are / might have, is that to retain the personal plate the vehicle has to have been taxed within the last 12 months. BUT to get it taxed it needs to have a current MOT!

Apart from the additional cost of the test, it of course needs to be sufficiently roadworthy to pass - which may not be an issue?

One further thought, if it's a classic car, I guess it may be old enough to not require an MOT? And in such circumstances, is the RFL also free?

Is there not a form that can just be downloaded to do the job?

But I agree Tam could have his work cut out with DVLA...

Im afraid it won't do you any good speaking to them .. they are correct .to retain the plate the vehicle needs to be taxed . Been there done that

If it has been sorned since 2007 I’d imagine it would need an mot before taxing would be possible

Light unit common earth failed on the affected side.
Yeah it's finding it ...all the wires go through the rear of the light ..the light is fastened to the bumper panel which appears to be glued to the van . This has 3 seperate lights on each side

I agree unles it is of a cert age and no longer requires an mot as a classic.
It may require a declaration by the owner as to its condition but I can’t remember the full requirements.

If they're all affected the earths must be connected to the body at one location. The earth connection at the individual light must be sound.

What im trying to do should be fairly simple. If it hasn't officially been downplated then it has been an error on dvla part ...they should have requested proof of its weight. It can never physically be 2900kg and all the vehicle plates and factory specs show the correct weight of 6600kg

The colour change is simple .and im not applying for motircaravan status just van with side windows which should also be straight forward.

Everything works fine on its own bar the sidelight so im guessing its the wire going to that where theres an issue. It must split behind the light unit somewhere and feed all the separate lights.

Run a new Earth ?

Run a new Earth ?
The problem is the earth seems to be fine at the last point i can access it before it goes behind the rear bumper. The fault is behind the light and bumper. To run a new earth from the light to a piece of metal id still have to remove the rear bumper.

I haven't followed this thread so might be barking up the wrong tree, but can you get at the bulbs, we had one where the bulbs kept coming loose and ended up jamming something in the holder.

If you get underneath the van at the back, behind the rear bumper, can you get better access?

Yes can access the bulbs and the connections behind the bulbs but then all wires go behind each light unit behind bumper . Its there that the fault lies as there is one earth comes from the front of the van to behind the bumper it then splits in to 4 to feed the seperate light units. Obviously something amiss in there. But to access it i need to remove the bumper. Which appears to be glued to the rear of the van.
