Tam and Toby ~~ Hunting Zorba .....Take two.

Tam, I said in an earlier message that I tried to get to Greece a few weeks ago going overland through Croatia etc. I got to Dubrovnik and found out that the Greek land borders were closed to all but essential travellers however I think they were letting a limited number of tourists in through ONE border crossing but only if you were able to present a negative test result within, I think, the previous 72 hours. I didn't have the time you do but decided against it, a COVID test with the required certification was something like 300 euros in Split (this I was told so worth checking).

The situation can change of course though I'm not sure for the better as things stand at the moment. My point is this and I I know it won't appeal (!) but crossing into Greece is a lot easier by ferry than overland as things stand, of course this means you would have to go via Italy but at the moment that's not out of your way. Croatia was worth visiting but if you can't get to Greece then ultimately you'll end up in a cul de sac and have to drive back again. If nothing else, food for thought.

Yeah ive just been googling info on different places ... It's looking like either a lot of expense or a lot of restrictions at present which is a bit shit

Nah youve to be out by 21.00 same as most of the carparks around this area ....

Ive not reached bad tolz yet ...is it nice ?
We liked it ... but was glorious sunny day, stellplatz on edge of river (walk through hedge) ... walk over bridge into town. Ramsau was also stunning ...

In a bit of a dilemma now as what to do next
I know you want to go to Greece BUT Europe is shutting its borders again ... in your position I’d at least consider heading west ... wintering out in Spain, where you know the lingo, know the country, and are possibly more assured of a hassle-free stay, let this wave pass and head to Greece in spring when things start to improve ...

Not sure how much time you’ve got to play with though ...

Its a bit of a nightmare to be honest ....i dont know what to do.
I dont really see the point in going through austria to Slovenia if i can only transit through slovenia within 12 hours which seems to be the case , i can then get to Croatia but not sure if id get much further south than that. No desire to pay for private covid tests either.
So

Ive only a couple of choices ...i can head for italy and drive south and maybe get ferry to Greece ...or i fail again and head for Spain ☹️

What im definitely not doing is heading back home

Ive a lot to think about before i move

Yeah theres a lot of sense in what you are saying

Cant help having the feeling of failing yet again if i do that though.

I love spain but i feel if i keep going to the same places i will lose that love for it.

The weather today is not helping lol

Yeah don't go back. Too cold, too many restrictions, government tying themselves in knots and causing unrest in the people. I know you've done Spain Portugal but sunshine and freedom is surely worth more than ticking off a new country? Only you can decide what will make you happy though.

Hi Tam, you could go to Italy & travel right down to the bottom & into Sicily (maybe warmer), how much of Italy have you seen? Then maybe back up & a ferry to Greece or even a ferry to Spain, either i guess would not be cheap, maybe you or someone could work it out?

Ive not seen much of it ....it was my planned return journey from Greece
My only concern would be if there were restrictions brought in for travel to Greece from Italy then id be in the same situation as getting to Croatia and would have to double back
I'd head to Italy and then try the ferry. Get to Greece, enjoy that for a bit then you can always plan a route back through the countries you have missed when/if restrictions ease.
My original plan was italy to Greece and return via Croatia etc i just decided to do it in reverse a few weeks before i left

Having a look on google it seems you can get ferry from Italy to Greece at the minute
But
You must have a negative covid19 test done no more than 3 days before

Anyone know any other information on that?

😹😹😹
Spain it is then.
🤣🤣🤣

If you go to Italy and then head for Greece there’s a decent chance it will work for you, even if you have to hang around for a while.

If you go to Italy and it then becomes very clear that travel east is too much hassle, you can go to Spain and Portugal.

I don’t think you should dwell on the “fail” word. It’s not a question of success or failure, you are entirely driven in one direction or another by this bloody virus, which is not your fault!! I guess, with hindsight,it was never going to be entirely straightforward.

I know you probably don't want my advice but if I was in your position I would make for Venice , knowing your love of old buildings you would be in your element, and should be a bit warmer .
Only problem is I think Italy have some sort of quarantine in place.

Problem i can see is requiring a covid test done 3 days before travelling italy to greece ..private test plus ferry could be expensive.

But there is a lot of italy i wanted to see but didnt last year as weather was terrible and its quite an expensive country to tour in ...

Regardless of which way i go i think the easiest route would be through the narrow part of Austria in to north italy so i guess id get an idea of weather and costs before i turned south or west ...

Yes venice has always had an appeal ...not sure of quarantine issues at present coming from Germany austria

Unless it's changed in the last couple of weeks you didn't need a test to enter Greece by ferry. You can get camping on board from Venice to Igourmenitsa or Patras one way for about 250 euros and I believe they are operating that for another couple of weeks. If I was you and with the time you have ahead of you I'd get on the ferry and go to Greece, the mainland is a great part of the country to explore all the way across to Turkey and there's no reason why you could cross the border towards Istanbul if you wanted, a magnificent city.

Ill look in to that .

Tam you are in a good place to make great decisions, your options are vast. Italy is fabulous we went as far as Naples (mad and vibrant) the drivers there are nuts. Amalfi coast is simply beautiful, not sure the roads are MH friendly. I hear Bari is well worth a visit too. You can stay in the MH on the ferry to Greece a wee bit of a saving.
