Tam and Toby ~~ Hunting Zorba .....Take two.

Glad the Suzuki is behaving and almost ready for work.
Hope the woofers are well, enjoying life (and being spoilt by Granny).😊
Loved tbe pictures, (not) but realise you boys need something obscure to talk about amongst yourselves 😁.
Keep well and happy, don't forget to stash the cash ready for the next trip. Regards to Jackie. 😊
Its a wee banger ....but its normally reliable and i replaced so many parts last year its worth just keeping hold of it till its no longer worth repairing.

Dogs are fine they love having all their doggy friends again in the local park

Need to earn some cash first as all im doing is spending it at the minute.

Tam move that fuel cut-off switch from the front to inside in a undisclosed position make a good anti theft device.

This might help you.....as you only seem to have two wires going to the motor one I think should be a permanent live and on switched. The Permanent live goes to the park switch.

So this morning i put the voltmeter on the pos and neg feed to the washer pump and all is fine there but the pump is dead so definitely need a new one of thise. I opened up the wiper motor but theres nothing obvious in there thats faulty ...i marked the spindle with a marker pen and plugged it in again to check ... doesn't stop in the same place twice ... My pet mechanic friend has placed a bet that its definitely the motor thats at fault so im just going to order a new pump and motor ...germany being the cheapest place to get them even with the higher postage costs.

if the park switch isnt working it will never stop in the right places not trying to tech my granny to suck eggs but sometimes you just need to see the basics to get your head round something for wipers i like this diagram

Yes but will they arrive that is the problem? Mate just had to pay 81€ in import tax & handling charge on a second hand servo from the UK.

Parcel I sent to our daughter in the UK weeks back has disppeared.

Well i have had to postpone the mot that I'd booked for Tuesday ☹️ ....the wipers don't park and the washers don't work. I thought as i had read online of other issues with these that the multi switch /stalk was at fault so i ordered one last week ... that arrived today but unfortunately made no difference £43 wasted there .

So i set about trying to access the washer pump which is a pita to get to as its located at the very rear of the windscreen washer bottle which is fitted tightly to the inner wing...but i managed to get it out after removing the headlight and indicator. I also then set about removing the wiper motor and to do that youve to remove bonnet and the skutttke panel below windscreen. I was dreading that as several of the vario builds i follow on Instagram have done this and found loads of rust under there....but in that point im lucky it seems as there was only 2 little bits of surface rust which have cleaned up well with the wire wheel and are now treated and painted. The skuttke itself will need sanded and sprayed but is also solid.

So anyway ive taken the wiper motor out and the washer pump. .....problem is im not convinced the wiper motor is knackered as it does work it just doesnt park....they aren't cheap so im unsure about ordering a replacement if it doesn't solve the problem ....from internet searches there doesn't seem to be a wiper relay on these vans but im going to reconnect the motor to the electrics tomorrow and see if i can hear a relay click anywhere just to make sure. The pump i will try with a couple of wires from the battery to see if its working.

Have delayed the mot till a week on tuesday to give me time to try and fix them.

In other news ive now fitted the new exhaust to the wee suzuki and the rear brake shoes , lambda sensor and welded up the 3 small holes i found in the front inner wings .....whole underside has also now been wire brushed and sprayed to try and stop any more rust.. its now ready for its mot on Wednesday and should go straight through now with no issues.

Wouldn’t it be easier just to buy a Vario already done ?

I would clean those contacts up and bend them up a bit to make better contact and then try it.
Also clean the track where the contacts run.
Did that ...made no difference

Have ordered new one from ebay ...postage £17 from Germany ... hopefully it arrives without a large tax add on

Washer pump from uk supplier.

Set about sanding down the rust on the skuttle panel and my bloody sander went bang 🤦‍♂️ so ive ordered a new one of those too.

Im hoping that as its on ebay UK and just states that its shipping from Germany that the price im paying with postage is the total

A few things ive bought lately has had a tax on them but stated at the ebay checkout which this didn't .

I challenge you to find one 😁
There’s this one...took 2 mins to find.....can’t understand why they are so expensive....a Hymer (other models are available) seems much better value. Unless you are into much higher payload what is the point. And Hymers can be upgraded payload wise anyway. My 3900 GVW Hymer like yours gives enough payload....

Found a sliver one on a 58 plate not much rust on it and even has a wheelchair lift & access for when Tam gets older.
Tidy van & not a bad price it would seem at first glance.

Theres my point ... that's about £27k and its only 6 metres and unlikely to be a layout id like. Mine has cost £4k so far which leaves me £23k to build a better one than that which i will know inside and out and all interior fittings will be brand new etc with off grid capability etc.

There are very few nice converted ones come up for sale ... yes it will be a lot of work but i believe it will be worth it in the end. Its a completely different ballgame from a 4- 4.5 tonne motorhome ....this thing is a truck with a van body and a mechanical tank.

Still have all the same work to do on that one and i dont like the passenger door on it.

Of course the calculations don't put a value on your time... are you keeping a log, or maybe just a rough approximation (number of days...?)

Yes but thats the same with any diy you do ....but if i wasnt doing this id be tinkering with toby anyway ...not keeping a log of time as at present im not the most productive ....i keep jumping back and forth between jobs. ... once its mot'd ill be more productive as ill be getting that floor up and the bodykit off etc ....im generally quite pleased at the condition underneath ....not as much welding required as i had first feared ...i reckon once its stripped out at the back which is a big task ....the welding itself should be done in 3 -4 weeks.

Just had another look to see why you dint like the passenger door on the one listed.
I never noticed before in sheer excitement of finding one I guess, but its strange that it a private seller with it parked in a yard full of caravans & MH's, do you reckon caravan/mh traders are buying these in, because they know that van lifers want them?
Maybe I should buy it at just below asking and store it, for a while, then stick in on The Van Lifers Forums, with a current MOT.:giggle:
What do you reckon, double my money, maybe.
Nice van not much rust to be seen on photos at least, and that hydraulic passenger door would handy to stop for the lemon sellers, wouldn't even have to get out the chair just pull a lever.(y);)

What kind of welding do you think it will need, get away with mig or will some need tig?

There are definitely some places buying them to sell on to van builders ...one such company is " basevan " on ebay ...they have 2 varios for sale ...one ex irish library van 2002 asking £10k for it ...its in about the same condition as mine ...and a 1996 ..811 for £6.5k which has loads of bits missing. These varios are sought after especially the panel vans ...and then the busses with steel body and normal doors , the fibreglass bodied ones and the ones with adapted front doors etc still get bought up but at a lower price usually. I wouldn't like the fibreglass ones as they will always look like an ex bus.
Im hoping by the time mine is done you would never know it started life as a bus

Will all be mig welded ....some by me but some of the heavier stuff like the rear frame to carry motorbike etc ill get someone to do it as it will be weight baring ....but ill see how it goes.
