Starlink ordered… I feel it’s the only sensible option now..

Shame it’s not a better spec router. I’m guessing 50-75 Mb down speed, so okay for what we use it for! Power consumption of up to 50w doesn’t really improve on where I am with my 12v conversion on the v2 dishy! Edit - if it’s only 20-25w I’m all over this!

I think I will invert my previous strategy and be a later adopter on this one… see how the Septics get on with it all first! 👍🏻
I agree. The lower power makes it far more feasible. 12v is more practical... I'm still going to need to upgrade my solar though.

Do you think SpaceX and Musk are morons or something and wouldn't do this?

Because many folks believe that other folks have less common sense than they do (a sort of superiority complex if you like 😎).

I agree that often people assume that decisions were made due to stupidity. Especially with government. When often they don't understand the situation... But this is Musk we're talking about. He has spectacularly missed on many occasions.

2 amps at 12v unless you use "snow melt" which draws 60 watts.
I'm already down to 2.5 amps at 12v with well over 150Mps download

I will be doing some more work in it when I get back to incorporate a router into the enclosure aswell. Strangely when I did the single cable option and was getting a max of 100Mbs, people suggested it was a backwards step to get less than 100Mbs, now it seems less than 100Mbs is in the four legs good, two legs bad category ...

Time to get your money out  I think it’s going to be a game changer for portable internet. 12v and 25w. 100 mb downloading.
Can’t wait
I think you are correct :)

Having it all built in will make it a lot easier, potentially more expensive when it goes wrong but still a lot easier (y)

I used to get around 55mb through fibre in my house, mobile signal is week in my area but I just manage to do what I need hotspoting through my phone as I don’t have home broadband now as I got fed up paying well over £30 for it…

If this comes in at under £50 a month for roaming then I will get it, for someone like me who’s away for six months of the year it will be a game changer where I can get over 50mb at home or away in the van….🤔

Well Elon was on X using this and screen shot 100mb. Hopefully the monthly cost will come down as well. This has been muted.

Speed isn’t everything! I feel you point is missing (slightly) the main selling point of the baby Dishy, the tariff. (Assuming it’s 50% of current Roam).

That's a big selling point whatever the download (within reason) though with four people connected (especially the kids with their toys) I wonder just how well it's going to work.

Don't get me wrong, given the option I would rather have the monthly half price starlink than the current £85 per month option!

I believe the current interpretation is that the dish will cost less. But it's less clear what the subscription price will be.

Might even be cheap enough to get me interested.
Speed might be quite a bit slower with the WiFi transmitted through a double skinked aluminium roof but probably still fast enough for most of us & it has an ethernet port if its a problem.

No won’t be cheap enough for you Lenny! 🤣

Always selling! 🤪🤣
Not really, I buy three times as much as I sell and then I always sell cheap.... If I do sell one of my starlinks to a fellow Funster, it will be at around the price I paid plus any bits I've added, so prob around £150 for a 12v starlink that is ready to be roof mounted ....I doubt anyone would complain at that price ....

Be great if it is 50%.

At some points during our trip to Spain I was getting 500mb. We only watch tv so 100mb will be more than enough and for us non tech people already being 12v is perfect. just need to improve the battery set up now (y)

Don't hold your breath as details of the USA release are now available and Mr Musk want's $599 for the mini dish plus $30 a month for the data plan but only as an addon to an existing plan and the final kicker is that its capped at 50gb month.
Here

Of course this is the USA but it's not looking good for the UK and others, he has gone back on what he tweeted when he said approx half price :(

With those prices and data cap it's dead in the water for me and for many others I would suspect. (n)

He seriously would have sold boat loads if he stuck to what he said, but i guess the numbers just didn't add up

Looks like this is just an initial offer to existing customers. It is not in full production yet so not available to the public who are not already customers.

As production ramps up, he expects the price to fall to the target.

I don't know about the 50GB limit. My guess is this is to prevent congestion and will be eased as more satellites are rolled out?

Existing customers should get it cheaper in theory as they are already on board, if he then sells this at half price a couple of months down the line there are going to be a lot of unhappy customers who paid full price. To be honest i cannot see people jumping on this offer so its likely a moot point.

I hope he does change the plans but the 50GB limit is the killer, lets hope this changes as well

One possible justification for charging more per GB is that the mini needs more air time to transfer a unit of data. It's a weaker signal from the smaller Dishy, so the data rate is worse. Each satellite can only talk to a few ground devices at once. It has to talk slower and for longer for each MB transferred.

I really think that before jumping in, potential users need to consider a few things, initial cost, ongoing cost, power consumption and alternative options.

I don't think it works like that. I suspect that that the total number of dishy's that can connect whether mini's or normal size ones is pretty much the limiting factor.
All those dishy's share the ground link which will be the limiting factor I suspect.

The ground link will support more dishy mini's than normal size ones hence the lower price perhaps.

Just me chuntering based on what I learned running a hosting company and dealing with the networking.

When I had the MotoSat DataStorm F3 Satellite internet back in 2005, you paid per 64Kbps channel to the satellite just as a point of interest.. A slower connection meant more could fit on the same satellite.

Starlink mini looks very interesting!
