Starlink ordered… I feel it’s the only sensible option now..

for a while now, Ive noticed the starlink app giving out readings quie higher then the google broadband speed test ?

anyone else notice this? is it Elon overselling again :giggle:

Different tests. I think the starlink app tests from your dish to the satellite. Google tests from your computer to one of their test centres.
Ookla will give a different result as well.

Does anyone know what the minimum inverter power needed for Dishy
I only have one that I used in my car to power the work laptop so I do not think its that powerful
Its not with me so cant check
I only use it now to power a big stand fan in the van when it gets very hot when off grid

Starlink is rated to draw up-to 75w at 230v, so 100w minimum but probably better 150w…

No fair usage policy? That would be unusual
50GB clearly stated

Oneweb not an alternative then?

I remember "Hyperloop" and "SolarCity", and I'm expecting a postcard from Mars any day now.

Happy with my 1Gb/s fibre to the home thanks

Roof fixing option - for those not looking for a permanent solution ....?

so long as you can get to the feet to unsecure them (assuming they are simple click in type fastenings - this might be a simple option?

Is that no3? :)
Lol no. That would have been greedy. It's one for the static in France and one for the motorhome and potentially home ..

But judging by the number of adverts on eBay and Facebook there are a few people who must have taken advantage purely to sell them on !

I ordered mine on Thu too but DHL says they have not received it yet 🤦‍♂️

Just brought another toy (new 3d printer) but this one is supposed to print a lot faster than my current prusa mk3s+ so going to test it printing out the flat dishy enclosure. Just 1 part in the prusa takes over 23 hours but on the new BAMBU X1C Carbon it is supposed to take 6 hours. That's huge if the quality is the same as the mk3s+. I do like prusa printers so it's was a tough choice. Time will tell though but at least the dishy enclosure will be printed. Just need to see what it comes out like which will be in a few days 👍

Inwas wondering whether it's possible to CNC some out of some acrylic but it's a big old slab..?

Has anyone found a padded bag carrier for Dishy and stand? Trying to reduce the volume of portable storage for the kit. Router isn't a problem nor are the cables. Prefer not to transport the dish in a big box as shown in many YouTube videos, we don't all own large RVs:LOL:

I mentioned it previously but Jim just asked me a question about it the other day. This video popped up on my feed from last year and it is a good explanation of how the phased array and beam steering works.

Not a long video and he gets into the relevent stuff within 2-3 minutes so worth sticking it out. I highly recommend anyone who has one and is even vaguely curious how it works to watch this video.

It explains how the dish works in a starlink.

Here is an image of the array;

My Dishy arrived yesterday. I searched for obstructions, using my phone and it didn't look good, as we have 30+ mature trees in our garden - three of them over 100 feet high.

I plugged everything in this morning and it seems OK, with a few minor dropouts. .

The dish is pointing almost at the Pole Star, over the roof of our house.

What sort of speed were you getting via broadband?

I like the concept of Dishy (and have bought two during the offer period) but we all should check that we can't get a better or sufficient service at less cost.... especially for use at a static location.

At home for £45 I get constant 500 Mbps speeds
I can go to 1000 Mbps for I think £55 so easily outperforms Dishy.
I have FTTP. Before FTTP I was getting 3Mbps on a good day
Dishiy for me was purely a Mobile thing and currently is in a box until until our summer break. @ £99 the kit was a no brainer for me. The £85 is a bit of sting but still worth it

About 30 Mbps, in our rural area which is fast enough for our normal usage. I've just twice checked Broadband speed on my phone ( not on the Starlink App) and got 150 Mbps followed by 90 Mbps.

To be honest I think I got carried away in all the excitement of the £99 deal and probably can't justify the cost of activating it for a month every time we go away in the MH. Also to make best use of it, I either need to get an Inverter or make/buy a 12v conversion kit.

My son has offered me a long term loan of a new
Netgear Nightgear 5g router, so with the addition of an external aerial that should probably satisfy my needs.

There may be a new Dishy in classifieds soon! :(

The Netgear Router option seems a brilliant offer. We have the M2 and have always had a signal wherever we went.
I got the starlink for specific purposes, so for me it was, and I hope still is, a correct decision (X 2)

Not sure if this will help, but my first Mk1 box is for mains only and can be left outside to provide WiFi inside the motorhome. It will also fit in a bit of cable to shorten the lead and uses the existing Starlink router. It uses the Masterplug outdoor box, which has nice waterproof seals for cables and can be got for less than £10 off eBay or Amazon.
The Mk2 will do AC 240V and DC 12V: In my Masterplug box will be a POE injector, satellite cable connector, and power from 240V to 48V and 12V to 48V (RS do a good Mains to 48 Volt switched mode). I'll use a Teltonika router, which will also run from 48V. I have all the bits, just a matter of having some time! The 12 Volt converter is an eBay one from China and does not fill me with confidence that it will work well, but we'll see.

Cheers

I'm looking at a similar setup to yours - that looks like the perfect size box for the router. Is it this one with external dimensions 345 x 220 x 126.5 mm?
