Starlink ordered… I feel it’s the only sensible option now..

No it's not. The clue is in the name Market Capitalisation. Ie the amount of capital it has raised from the market. It is the value the market has set for the company based on it's share price multiplied by the number of shares issued on the market.

SpaceX needs money to launch rockets. This comes from one of two sources. Profits from business activity OR from selling his own personal shares.

So... He is boosting sales of starlink to make profits so he doesn't have to sell shares.

Well he ain’t making money from most of the people who signed up on here! The hardware will be heavily subsidised @£99. If people freeze their subscription as a fair proportion have or intend to do, he certainly isn’t making profit! Therefore I surmise he’s doing it for different reasons, maybe he is building perceived value, therefore growing the Capital value of his business. Creating value as opposed to just earning

PS: I am off to work now. So keep having a pop at him if you want. I am done :p

I think you will find that more people sign up and use them than sign up and park them. they will have done this calculation.

Yes of course they will understand how it drives the value of the business… but the subscription isn’t important per se, it’s the fact he has the ability to receive a subscription from X customers, which ‘could give’ Y profit in the future. So building the perceived value of the business as opposed to necessarily the actual value through immediate profit.

You’ll see in my previous posts why he’s doing it! 😇

Happy to have a call and explain this to you if you need ‘a light bulb moment’? 🤪🤣

Well its been nearly a week now of using the Space x Starlink and I have to say it is deffo a game changer for me
Previously I have had years of patchy mobile phone coverage especially in rural areas and even in busy towns
As we are out of EU roaming is difficult and with only a few sims having decent data allowance
I have tried most sims and have a roof mounted aerial for my Netgear MiFi and its never been great
For most general browsing and mail etc its been fine but as soon as my wife wants to stream stuff it becomes a real mixed bag of success
Now with dishy she can watch catch up of all her soaps in full HD without a hint of buffering
For me I am not overly bothered about missing TV although I do like to watch the odd movie via my mini projector and fire TV setup - I have a Plex server at home so can even watch live TV anywhere I like - For the first time its been seamless and as good as being at home
Both of us can be watching full HD streams at the same time with no issue
We can easily watch what we want with no buffering and upload to my home server all the 4k video and photos I take without data usage worries
I know the monthly usage fee is high but in my case circa 3/4 months ina year its worth it
The only negative I can see is getting a decent view of the sky when we park up
When on the move our phone data allowance will suffice for data on the go
If anyone is sitting on the fence - get off it and buy one before the offer ends :)

Another happy camper that shows you that dumping those SIM card wifi boxes to the bin pays off.

fair points ..BUT, the business is already in profit (which has enabled him to slash the dish costs on a push) . Aswell as the fact that it isnt a tangible product he is selling as the satellites are already beaming down the connection anyway, . so every extra £1.00 he makes on subscription, is extra bottom line money, even with the (potential) subsidised loss on the dish & loss in Ukraine
(we assume he is still losing on the dishes of course).
edit...
All it is now is a race to get satellites up to keep up with potential demand similar to his superchargers and cars I suppose.

All very good points. The motivation won’t be profit at the moment though.

It’s also interesting what he’s probably achieved with his competition too! The two competitors he’s probably already pretty much covered now as I’m sure their fourth or fifth rounds of VC/Investor funding are being met with challenging conversations. How the hell Re they going to compete with Starlink?

The really really interesting thing is that he has also significantly increasing the addressable market. The difference in price compared to a 4G/5G solution has become increasingly small, coupled with the challenge of roaming and still very patchy 5G download speed, his big blue ocean of possible subscribers (addressable market) has increased significantly.

Look at this topic and the posts only a few weeks back on this thread about it being expensive and do we really need it, compared to more recent posts showing how bloody good it is and how the delta between what we were all doing pre Starlink for high availability low latency data and now, is making it a relatively simple decision. The guy is genuinely very very clever not only with his ideas, but the way he captures early market opportunities, creates value through the service and then creates a mass market adoption proposition. My hat is doffed!

and yes, as the price gets more comparable, the faster it will grow.
the only downside as of now I see, is the truly "mobile" version being cost-effective against those you mentioned.
Fair way off.

So, now ours has arrived, what solution do people have for running the cables? We'll be setting ours up each time when we're on site and want to keep the floor stand for those occasions were pitched under trees.

I guess just passing the cable out a window is probably the simplest option and is unlikely to damage the cable if we keep the window on breather. I'd prefer to run it out of the garage, but I think the door seal would likely damage the cable? What do people do?

Ordered last night. Just got an email from DHL that they are waiting for delivery along with a shipment number.

I have succumbed to the offer and just ordered it, now where do I change it to roam?

I just pop mine out of the large skylight and run cable through and close skylight
Cable is loose and runs tight to roof line to router and plug socket which is high
all a bit heath Robinson but quick. Simple. Works

For me the easiest option is to cut just the motor and print my own case.
You could cut an access hole in the back of Dishy, disconnect the motor power connector, then reseal the hole.

Details here. https://www.starlinkhardware.com/how-to-disable-the-starlink-antenna-motors/

In that one, they're using a wood drill bit, but if you get a circular hole saw attachment (40mm or so), you can make a nicer larger hole which you can then fill easily with a rubber blanking grommet of the same size.

I just put mine out the drivers door and close the door on it - works fine. (although it may not on a modern van with decent door seals).

No good for me as it will sit too high on the roof, originally I wanted to do that and then use the TV aerial hole but it's way too small to take the starlink pole. Flatmount for me once I have managed to print the enclosure

Are you going to cut the whole back of the dishy off? I've seen a few mods with that done, but it looks a bit... drastic. Does get it nice and flat though.

Nope, just the part where the motor is. There is a video I linked a while back in this thread that explains it as well providing the stl files to print the enclosure. Much safer option and no need to reseal the inside as you are not going near that.

At Vanlife festival in Shrewsbury. The 4G/5G mast is under serous pressure and the speeds are pretty much non usable. Gromett had warned of this problem and now I can see exactly what he meant!
Real time speed tests below .

I finally convinced myself that I need a Starlink dish! :giggle:

Luckily I made the decision yesterday and noticed the £99 deal was about to expire. I've been advised by DHL that they are expecting my parcel.

During my research I discovered this article about a way of powering Starlink with 12v, that may be of interest.

There are cleaner options available discussed in previous pages. All should do the same thing so it's likely down to personal preference 👍

Thanks. Does that mean I've got to go back through 680 posts?!
