Starlink ordered… I feel it’s the only sensible option now..

Ontario premier ‘ripping up’ contract with Musk’s Starlink over US tariffs

Clearly a man with values and ethics, no one needs starlink that badly.

When trump posted sanctions on canada & mexico then lifted them "for a week" the ontario premier carried on regardless & instructed ALL & every business selling american alcohol products, a 1 billion dollar/year for that region, to remove them from the shelves as he was making it illegal to sell them. Another regional premier did similar but targeted it solely at imports from states that had actually voted republican.

Anyone seen this reduced monthly rate £8 (for 20gb) on their Starlink?

My Spanish neighbour was broken into just before Christmas.

They had internet .

But now they have installed 3 Ring Cameras and for some reason , Star-Link.

I had considered Starlink as its 2/2 price here in Spain than the UK. That along with a UPS, would make it more difficult for any burglars to cut the internet before breaking in .

Meaning I would get an alarm and video from cameras

And if you could power it via 12v with usb cameras, if they cut the power supply (if that's possible?) then it would still send a signal/record for a few hours, just need to add a charger permanently charging the battery?

I'm sure you could come up with working solution - would also give you internet etc if there was a power cut ....??

How much do you want for the boondocker board please?
Hi
It will be a while before my plan comes to fruition (possibly never. But hopefully this year. A lot of things need to align (no pun intended))
When/If - I will let you know

Easy to jam, a criminal would find it no problem to get around. Since a break in I have two systems one wired one wireless. But also accept it’s not fool proof

Solutions from APC help, it means my broadband (which has the BT ‘unbreakable service so if the broadband goes down it reverts to cellular) my NAS and wired cameras to the NVR (network video recorder) which provide Power over Ethernet will still work and the cameras have a SD card so of the NVR is nicked they store the last few hours of recording. And the wireless cameras have batteries and images stored in the cloud. The Alarm and broadband also have the APC power back up

Back up power will work for at least 8 hours. This is in addition to the battery storage from my solar.

Criminals if they have a mind could still get past this tech if they have a mind to do so.

The OP is looking for a solution in Spain, I doubt BT are an option.

I used BT as an example as that is what I use and was one of the first if not the first to provide the Hybrid service. If you check other service providers they do the same including….vodaphone which provides service in Spain

Why the obsession to watch people ransacking your house? If you are miles away that's about all you can do. Police won't be interested these days. I have cameras to check on my dog if I go out for a meal but can't see much point in having a failsafe monitoring system unless you have a private security contract.

Makes all the difference, i saved myself 10k one year when I had a water leak and i could prove that the house was being checked on daily. Insurance company had no choice but to then pay up, if I was not able to prove that then i would have been liable to pay for it myself (short version but valid).

For me, they are essential and i would not be without them, they are cheap to install and don't take much know how to operate.

I have cameras to make them think what else they might have to stop me. Hopefully they go next door who like you has nothing.
Feel free to move next door.
It’s similar situation with having a Vanbitz alarm and the little flashing blue light. They are the deterrent. Along with the stickers.
As Zac says it also allows you to monitor for me boiler and post when away for 90 days

But this was all about security and people blocking signals or cutting power supplies. Even if you saw it real time how quick could you get the police there? I'm 1500 miles from home and can see what's going on in my house but there are many single points of failure because I realise I'm the only one that give a sh1t, plus I have most things of value with me.

It is about security, but they can do so much more, i had water entering the garage last year when we were away, how did i know because one of the security devices text me when it lost power (water got into the plug socket inside the garage tripping the breaker). All in all, there are so many things that they can be used for aside from watching someone ransack your home :)

Blocking signals i am not sure of as this can be done anywhere by anyone and does not only apply to camera's but a lot more things, no way of sorting out for all possibilities but maybe just the obvious ones like APC's/battery backups

Or get the 'Verisure' system installed with smoke generators that the central office can set off ,but swop them for tear gas.:giggler:
If I was relying on cameras to inform me of a break in then I would definitely invest in some serious stuff that can be set off remotely with a view to seriously hurt anyone illegally entering.

I turn the water off as I leave ,
as to power mine is now internal

It was the one time that i did turn the water off but never thought about draining the cold tank in the loft that dumped all the water on the ceilings and ground floor when the pipe in the airing cupboard burst. Never again, so now i dont turn off the water at all and leave it as is and have someone come in or stay there whilst we are away
Walked into the front room when we arrived home to a soaking wet floor and a waterfall coming through the electric smoke alarm in the ceiling (that was over 10 years ago now and never had a problem since)

I’d probably get back from the south of Spain before any police officer turned up.
The difference is the street we live in every one knows who should be around. Good old fashioned community

Starlink mini. Is there a period of grace when setting up a new mini ? I was considering setting it up before I actually need it, as I understand it once an account is set up it can be paused but you still pay for the full month. What I would like to do is get it out of the box, check it all works then switch off until it is required.

Don’t chance it.
I did exactly that with the gen 2 and got charged immediately.
When I recently bought my mini as soon as I set it up charged.
Personally if you don’t want to use it yet. Wait until you do.

I tried starlink out today, there is a "period of grace" of 60 minutes use before you set up an account.

What's the going second hand price for a Gen 2 system with an ethernet adapter?
Might be selling mine.

I paid £125 from a fellow Funster Christmas ‘24.

No idea WRT the Ethernet adapter..

Given that they are still £400 direct I would expect at least half that if not a bit more
Add any extras to it by the same amount ie at least half what they go for now

So having changed my starlink address to Spain ok and used for the month. I now having moved back to France wish to reactivate my starlink mini this morning.

Problem

For the first time I have a service is at capacity in your location and I’m unable to get roaming unlimited. Great.

Roam 50gb is available at €40 or global at 440.

Only have just over a week left and will try again later today to see what happens.

Wasn’t expecting this to be a problem

where was the roaming unavailable .....? i was hoping to take one to France next week and activate the roaming feature !!! it wont be a mini though, but should that make any difference? can you keep updating the thread please?

I’m down Royan. In the area that I originally bought and registered address for the starlink mini. My gen 2 was working ok yesterday up to the pause time on the unlimited data

I’ve just tried to reboot with no luck. Still the same message.

Not sure how the 50 gb works if you go over. And is there a limit ie €72 as in the unlimited package

Edit
Also just tried my Spanish registered gen2 that was in service till last night. I have the same message on that and only 50gb service available.

I had been eyeing up Starlink Roam for some time now … but all this hokey cokey over varying tariffs (pay £x per month for yGb of data) and the restrictions on time abroad, have put a dampener on it for me.

We’re moving house this year - potentially somewhere more rural and if the broadband isnt fibre, Starlink will definitely be the back up plan - but struggling to justify it now for the moho.

Its starting to feel like a bit like a sim card network with some very expensive hardware and little competition to keep prices down.

Can you not just use the "60days elsewhere " on the spanish registration whilst awaiting availability?

He needs to stop blowing up spaceships and launch some more satellites or build more ground stations, whatever is required.
I had a message that I ignored when I reactivated before leaving the UK last month, maybe it said near capacity, not over capacity, it was something about capacity but they've been taking money and it's working.
