Simple food for simple/single blokes

@gus-lopez chips from the air-frier will taste of the potatoes with which they were made, unlike chips cooked in deep fat which will taste of the fat in which they were cooked :sneaky:
I prefer oven chips myself ...

Having an oven is a great advantage

Oven chips are fine and convenient
a. If you have a freezer
b.if you can reach the oven
c.if you don't mind paying an exorbitant price per potato  :)

So how many kilos of potatoes can you buy for €1:15?
And how much was the farmer paid for them?

Well in France less than 1 lol ...buggers charged me €2.39 for a wee bag of tatties the other day ....i was that shocked I emailed my mum lol ...it went kind of like this

" photo enclosed guess how much these cost ? ...a quid in asda but they must be like gold here for French fries or something I nearly had to take out a bank loan "

But farming needs to be sustainable, how much capital and time would you be prepared to invest for €1:15 ?
And I think I am correct in saying in the UK there are quotas on how many potatoes a farmer is allowed to grow.

I've yet to meet a poor farmer. They all ride round in 50k range rovers wearing tweed.

So good, you can't get anything out of it - or have you defrosted it now?
:p
Aye but that was more the leaking ice cube tray than the freezer but all sorted now

I only lost one cornetto

That must be why such a high percentage of farmer's kids are on or eligible for subsidised school dinners?

Being a single bloke I have no cooking skills - I have eaten cold beans from a tin (normal I know) but would like to do better

This morning I looked in the fridge :):xrofl::)
....sausages and an open tin of mushy peas

I fried the sausages then added the mushy peas to the pan......fabulous!!

Looking forward to the same tomorrow!

Any other unusual combos?

Do you have an ASDA nearby? If so these two are extremely easy..

Roast Pork Loin Joint with Herb Crust (link).. Dead easy to cook. 1 hours 20 minutes in oven, open oven peel film and give it another 15 minutes.

Chicken Breast join with pork, sage and onion stuffing (link) Same as pork except you stick the knife in the film once before banging it in the oven.

Asda also do aunt bessies roast spuds with goose fat which are fantastic with that above.

Enough of the pre-made food. I strongly recommend you learn how to make a white sauce from scratch. It is dead easy but from that you can make loads of things like cheese sauces, for mac and cheese. Cauliflower cheese etc etc etc. You can also make fish pie and loads more.

A couple of meals I can cook are a roast dinner and cauliflower cheese but when I do these I end up eating leftovers for the week...

I will look at the cookbooks sugested but will also think more about freezing ingredients and cooked meals(y)

I batch-cook stews and microwave them from frozen. Chicken or turkey for a lighter meal, pork or beef for hearty dinners. I put potatoes in them too so just one bowl to wash up (plus the freezer tub).

You can even use frozen vegetables if you don’t want to peel and chop fresh ones but they will probably go a bit mushy.

My fave is grilled or fried smoked streaky bacon on a hot cross bun, even nicer if the bun is spread with a bit of marmalade!

I struggle to make a decent white sauce so I use packet mixes but it's one of the few 'cheats' for me. I cook mainly from scratch.

Microwave rice is one of my staple foods - Aldi do a lovely brown rice version - and it keeps for 3 days once opened. If you don't have a microwave, it cooks well in a frying pan or just stirred into whatever you are cooking.

Aldi also do small jars of carbonara sauce to which I add cooked chicken, mushroom, extra ham, almost anything lurking in the fridge.

Serve with pasta, microwave rice, instant mash or noodles.

A lot of people talk about using the oven in their motorhome. Mine is used for storing the fruit and vegetables!

It really is worth learning how to do. Once you learn the tricks it is dead easy. Honest, if I can do it anyone can.

Boil up some pasta, in a pan cut up some salami, add a tin of baked beans, a tin of chopped tomatoes, once pasta is cooked drain, add to salami mix. Serve. Enjoy. Hot, tasty, filling and probably plenty left for the next day too!

Walk to the Chippy, or dial a pizza.

Didn't even did the chippy right last time....

Fish, chips and pea mix ..... soggy mess

Next time fish, chips and peas SEPERATE !!

Corned beef hash. Onions potatoes and corned beef. Delicious.
Phil

Add boiled, cubed beetroot to make what the Yanks call red flannel hash then you get one of your 'five a day' too.

I guess that's the equivalent British version of black pudding and bacon on a brioche bungenerously smothered with maple syrup.
Mmmm delicious.

Anybody can cook if they really want to......if you’ve no idea at all just follow recipes.....simples!

Sorry, can't agree with that. Have followed some recipes precisely, even buying ingredients that I didn't have available and sometimes prepping for ages, and once cooked they have been terrible!

“Grub on a grant” by Cas Clarke. Student cookbook from the 80’s, the title dates it a bit! Great book for the totally clueless at cooking, sustained me & others through university, still in the cupboard and still in use now!
