Should I Buy a Refillable Gas Bottle?

It really depends on how and where you use the vehicle.

If you use sites that have ehu and only the occasional cl or wild without ehu then refillable may not be cost effective.

However, if you mostly use off grid stops then refillable is probably for you.

It is certainly cheaper on gas , but as I say it really depends on how much you will use over a 12 month.

Am I right in thinking that I'd only need to buy the bottle once and then I can just refill it as and when I fancy?

I don't really like the idea of potentially going on trips without knowing how much gas is there.

Just spend 100 or however much on a bottle once instead of 30 or 40 each time?

Yep, once bought the bottles are yours fill up as and when. Essential for foreign touring..
I've already filled up 3 times this year with about 100lt approx 50kg, hate to think how much that would have cost with exchange bottles.

I think I'll go for refillable most likely.
Is safefill the brand to buy?

A few years ago I would say refillable is the way to go unless you are always on hookup and only go on short trips. For the UK at least I think (well for us) its best to have both so I have one Calor and one Gaslow with a filler on the side of the van. The Gaslow is the preferred option but the issue is there are less and less LPG stations these days so its getting harder to fill up and sometimes impossible. In the UK at least we have the best of both worlds as you can always find a Calor bottle but not always an LPG station.

As said, mainland Europe on a long trip Gaslow or your refillable of choice is the way to go.

No, they are a single hole bottle not very good for a perminant install as they have to be filled via the outlet, and you can't fit an external filler.

Gas bank are a 4 hole composite bottle, Gaslow & Gas it are steel bottles and Alugas Aluminium bottles.

I opted for safefill as I didn’t fancy drilling holes in a new van.

Happy with the bottles so far very light so easy on the payload and you can see how much gas is in the bottle by shining a light through the bottle.

I chose safefill as the cost to have gas low installed and the need for a gas bottle urgently made safefill the easy choice for me. Having an install like gas low makes filling more convenient. Go for what suits your needs best .

22 litre refillable lasts us from 10 to 15 days in the winter months...running fridge, hob, heating and hot water..
In the summer it's just the fridge and hot water..

We have gaslow with exterior fill point. Gas is cheaper, bottle doesn’t need to be empty to refill like an exchange cylinder does. No lugging heavy gas bottles in and out of maybe difficult spots. We only camp in uk and don’t have problems filling up. We might fill at home because we do have a garage in town or we fill on our travels using the mylpg app. Last summer filled at a lorry depot which was great, they filled for me and the gas was even cheaper. Our cylinder has a dial on top which while not wonderfully accurate does give an idea of how much is in there.

I have a Safefill and regret buying it. On its third fill the 80% cut off failed and the cylinder overfilled. I had to get advice from Basildog on how to release the excess gas. If I can contrive a visit to N Yorkshire I will get a proper system installed. I suggest you talk to Autogas 2000 about your options.

Gaslow all the way. No issue at all abroad unless you don’t have an external filling point.
Very simple to fit yourself as well. Worst bit is drilling a 57mm hole in the side of the gas locker😳

Yep. Charlie and his team are the best for sure.

Might be a problem I don't think any carrier will take them you can only ship new unused ones even then via very few carriers.

Yea I think your right Lenny, hence I haven't stuck them up on our classifieds section here on the site, but a bargain if someone was either over here on holiday or lived here

Convenience is more important than cost effectiveness.

We have 3 Safefill. Only go on short trips with the lowest bottle.

If you intend on touring on mainland Europe for more than 2 weeks, then you need a refillable system.

Talk to Autogas2000 in Thirsk about the best option for your needs and requirements.
The benchmark system is a double Gaslow system, but there are other options.

Whilst refilling LPG in the UK is getting harder, there are still hundreds of outlets.
The MyLPG.EU app will tell you the local ones and the current price of LPG.

It does not matter if there are none near you, as you simply fill up when needed, hundreds of miles from home, as, with twin bottles, you would have a week or two's warning that you needed to fill up.
(A bit like the AdBlu waning, that you 'only' have 1,500 miles left before you need to fill up)

We have one Gaslow, one Calor bottle set up "just in case".
After 5 years of carrying around the Calor bottle and never using it, I have now switched it on to empty it over the next few weeks and bought a smaller Gaslow bottle to replace it as my backup.

If they're not sold (very possible as I'm not really trying to sell them) but if not I could maybe throw them in the van for you when I'm next travelling through Blighty and arrange to get them to you

I have 1 Gaslow 6kg bottle & was thinking of getting rid of my Propane 6kg & adding another Gaslow, looking around at over £100 + for one bottle so yours are a great buy for someone 👍

I have just gone with one Gasbank Duo 11kg, and a calor as backup. So far I'm very happy with it. The duo has the direct fill point.. Be sure to buy the adapter for it e.g bayonet.
