Should I Buy a Refillable Gas Bottle?

Another vote for just one refillable. I also have a small Calor as backup and only used it once when having some work done so couldn’t refill. If you don’t have much space even just the refillable would work if you kept an eye on its level (maybe Mopeka gauge).

It’s the being able to refill at any point that really makes the difference, so whenever you find cheap gas you pop some in.

I've got 2 brand new gaslow gas bottles for sale both never used or fitted & both have easy view level sensors fitted 1 is 11kg (rrp £200) 1 is 8kg (rrp £190) I'll let them both go for £200 all You'll need after that is the hoses and filler cap.... bargain 🙂
Problem is im in Ireland and not sure how I can send these across the shuck (presuming your in Angleterre? ) but if you can think of how to shift them they're yours for 200 quid

Looking to buy gas for our MH. Would people recommend refillable? We're planning on using it most weekends
YES!

If you use gas regularly it is a major benefit.

Never have to wait for the bottle to empty before refilling it - so even with a single bottle you should never run out.

Considerable saving on cost of gas.

Highly recommend Gas Bank 5kg bottles, they are slim enough to fit in any gas lockers, unlike Safefill bottles, which are quite fat. I started off with 1 bottle and a calor, but I saved my pennies and now have 2 gas Bank, bottles. So easy to fill up and use, we topped up four times in France, Spain and Portugal with no issues and the gas is so cheap, the bottles pay for themselves in no time. Recommend LPGSHOP.CO.UK.

Advantages
You can top up the bottle any time so you are less likely to run out
Because of this you probably only need to carry one bottle rather than a spare
You can see the gas level inside a safefill bottle with a torch
Big savings - £1 a litre vs £2: saving £1 a litre (approx)
Lighter weight than a swap bottle
Avoids initial £45 service agreement for a swap bottle
Avoids need to buy a spare foreign bottle & pigtails in Europe

Disadvantages
LPG suppliers not numerous - relying on Morrisons
Supply pumps are sometimes empty/ out of order
Less savvy suppliers refuse bottle refills
Some pumps are tricky to use
Bottle has 10 year life
High Initial cost £120 - recouped after 75 litres used (£120 - £45)
Need adapter to refill in Europe

Hi
Where in county Donegal are you. I’m in Belfast but could travel to pick them up depending where you are.
Thanks
Bryan

I'm very happy with my Gaslow cylinder.
No external filling point but I can fill the cylinder in situ with the rear door open which seems to do the trick as far as cashiers are concerned ;)

As mentioned above, the refillable bottle is supposed to be checked/serviced at 10 years but apparently there's no company that does it so you have to buy a replacement. Apart from that, I'm pleased with mine, glad I fitted it.

I’ve been travelling a lot in the Spanish Pyrenees and have noticed that there are very few LPG stations but most towns have swappable cylinders on display. So, refillable may not always be the best option with regard to availability. Unfortunately, my tiny gas locker is unlikely to fit any popular-sized swappable cylinders as a reserve. Realistically, only a problem in cold weather!

I'd been wondering about this, as mostly using camper in France and continent. Have just settled for Gaslow cylinder (less than £300 with fitting kit) and Camping Gaz 907 in spare space as pretty much available anywhere in Europe, even if no LPG.

Installed it myself with filler on back of gas locker behind barn door on PVC. Also put in an inspection hatch so easy to check gauge and turn gas on/off for ferry trips.

Thank you everyone for the responses.
Much appreciated
Beware! If you buy a new gas tank check the expiry date
I bought a gaslow one 3 weeks ago and the date was January 2033
I complained And had a 20% refund for the lost 2 years
I could have demanded a new tank but given my age I won't be refilling it when almost 90.! It wasn't gaslow themselves but a well known gas equipment supplier for motorhomes

If they're not sold (very possible as I'm not really trying to sell them) but if not I could maybe throw them in the van for you when I'm next travelling through Blighty and arrange to get them to you
Are you interested in selling just the 11kg cylinder?

One of mine is 2032, but the other I need to pull out and uncover the date from the rust!

TIA
Jon (in sunny Tyrone)

Edit: Nevermind, I see Bryan is interested in both!

I'll race you for them! Mind you, I have a headstart here in Tyrone! 😂

I'm sure Captain Paul would prefer to sell both!

Not us I hope ?
Autogas 2000 Leisure Ltd
We sold off all our 2 year old Gas It bottles for £100 and scrapped a pallet of brand new LPG tanks of various sizes that were over 3 years or more ☹️

No, certainly not you, but the tank was in its delivery box from manufacturer so supplier probably didn't know. I was only aware of dates as I had a gaslow tank dated 14 year guarantee across it in large numbers and only when I became aware of Club threads did I realise I was out of time and renewed.

I think I'll go for refillable most likely.
Is safefill the brand to buy?
I bought a Safefill lightweight bottle.

Best decision I made after 8 years of hassles trying to refill bottles in various countries.

In Portugal and exchange 11 kg bottle is going to cost circa €36.

Refill at the LPG pump is less than €20, and much cheaper again in Spain.

Easy to self install and Safefill are very helpful if you have any questions.

I have one exchange bottle for emergency use if I run out of gas in the Safefill to carry me over a day until I refill the Safefill.

I put long pigtails on for convenience so I can swap out the exchange bottle easily and check fittings etc. from time to time instead of trying to fit my head and shoulders inside the small gas storage locker.

Also saves having to refill gas bottles like in Morocco.

As an aside, I've had success at yacht marinas as can usually refill almost any gas bottle, as they refill bottles for yachts from all over the world.

Attached photo of having to buy gas bottles in Mongolia because I couldn't find a place to refill.

Refilling in Morocco is not a problem

I've had Gaslow systems for 18 years and it's paid for itself many times. I'm lucky that Gaslow has it's headquarters 2 mile from me and they now have a tank on site. Filling the tanks has become more difficult year on year, so take that into account.

Definitely go for a fixed bottle, gaslow or similar if you are doing any serious touring. I recently worked out that the one bottle we fitted back in 2005 had saved us over £2,500. I still have one bottle and carry a calorie spare but cry if I ever have to use it, luckily just a very rare occasion.

If that's the amount you saved, how much gas are you using? Sounds like an awful lot. Do you spend all your time off-gridding in Norway and the Alps in winter?

I've put in about a 100 Lt so far this year that's a saving of at least £100 in a few months.

No but averaged over 160 nights per year touring Europe a lot of the time over winter for the best part of 20 years
