Not news, it was first announced 8 years ago.
And it's for every non EU resident entering the EU by land, sea or air at any EU entry point so UK isn't any different to any other border points. Going to Majorca, same applies.

Here's the details.

The European Commission first announced the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) in April 2016in the Communication "Stronger and Smarter Information Systems for Borders and Security". The proposal was adopted on November 16, 2016, and the ETIAS Regulation (EU) 2018/1240 was adopted on September 12, 2018, entering into force on October 9, 2018. However, the launch of ETIAS has been delayed several times and is now scheduled for May 2025.

It isn't the 7 euros you need to worry about but the 3 hours or so added time exiting . I fail to see how it can possibly work anywhere but an airport.certainly not a JIT port like Dover.

These days US entry is a (biometric) photo on entry and exit in Florida, assumign they already have your prints and passport in system. Remember the taking the fingerprints is ONLY needed the first time, as in future times they can link to passport.

Should add in US, visitors who have visited (before) are usually seperated into a seperate lane to be verified (faster) by machines, where the first time visitors get a seperate queue for the enrollment process with an officier.

That is airports .Try 55 people all having to get off a coach , prints, photo etc."it'll only take 5mins a person" they say yes that's 5hours per coach

& my extremely laid back mate who travels to the US regularly to visit kids & grand kids says 2 hours is best he has ever managed & told me not to even think of going as I'd be arrested & deported

We are too, but I still have a British passport. My wife is Spanish. I wonder how that will be when we arrive in the UK next year.

There is still confusion here between EES which comes into force later this year which is finger prints and face scan. That will cause delays initially. ETIAS (the visa waver) is different. You have to apply before your travel, in fact the advice is apply before you book, and it is electronically attached to your passport. Should not cause any extra delay to passport control.
And we do have a similar system for people coming into this country: ETA (electronic travel authorisation). Currently for those from:

• Bahrain
• Jordan
• Kuwait
• Oman
• Qatar
• Saudi Arabia
• United Arab Emirates

More countries to be added later.

On the news and apparently they pay up to £15k each now to come across the channel so if we started charging I don’t think the extra £7 will be a deal breaker

Ban term is also being reviewed with it being reduced to 4 days so the current thought is no packing required as skivvies can be worn correctly, then back to front, then inside out and, finally, inside out and back to front.

We are permanent residents pre transitional period.....As we have biometric ID we don't need to register...
What may be confusing is if we visit the UK, what procedures would be in place at Border Control for overseas visitors....or will this not be on exiting the UK but entering Schengen, currently at airports we show both our passports and Residents card...

"The fee will apply to anyone between the ages of 18 and 70, but the waiver will be free for children and the over-70s."

I believe it applies to everyone outside the Schengen zone (with certain exceptions such as Southern Ireland). So yes you will need to apply for the visa but it will be free. Same for under 18s.

More details here but still not clear as to whether over 70's are exempt or just get it free. Either way, I don't understand why over 70's are special in this case.

There are certainly a lot of excemptions.
