The European Commission first announced the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) in April 2016in the Communication "Stronger and Smarter Information Systems for Borders and Security". The proposal was adopted on November 16, 2016, and the ETIAS Regulation (EU) 2018/1240 was adopted on September 12, 2018, entering into force on October 9, 2018. However, the launch of ETIAS has been delayed several times and is now scheduled for May 2025.
