The argument for increasing the 90 day rule to boost tourism is a false one.
If it was a false one why is the Spanish minister of tourism trying to get the rules changed?

Because the Spanish do not agree with the rule full stop. They think that it is a dictate from the Germans and Macron. Letting us coffin dodgers in for an extra month or so will not bring in a tsunami of cash.

They re never going to sort the whole problem but they still go out to have a good time Hence all the pubs and bars aimed squarely at them. I found Benidorm very peaceful last winter, but there were whole hotels closed for the season and many of the traders were complaining about the lack of british tourists.

Last Christmas was still heavily impacted by covid and I don't think that the 90/180 rule was enforced. This year will be down slightly on numbers due to the cost of living crisis. Numbers will be lower next year.

How many folk are really likely to stop going somewhere because they can only go for 90 days? I guess we're hearing more reports on here because we're a group of motorhomers and there a higher proportion of folk who would like to spend more time in winter destinations such as Spain. The only folk that I know outside of the motorhoming community who have been impacted are owners of properties in Spain. Again, a very small number of people.

To be fair, last winter was not a good indicator. A lot of people would not travel as they were scared witless by catching Covid and the French closing the border before Christmas stopped a lot of people with dogs travelling as they did not want to put the dogs into the ferry kennels.

Relatively speaking its a tiny, tiny number of people who have been put out with the 90/180. I wouldn't expect a British Government to want to do anything about it, it must suit them, keeping money at home. If I were PM I'd drop it to two months '\

Any changes in the rules will come from individual EU countries, we're already seeing the Digital Nomad Visa, I reckon maybe a 180/360 Holiday-home-owners-visa will happen one day soon. A Motorhome-Owners-Visa, maybe, but I won't hold my breath.

I won't either.

I think most have given up on all the things they thought would never happen because we were so important like abandoning the 90/180 rule. On the scale of things it's just not that important to spend a lot of time trying to negotiate different rules.

What if they start banning re-entry like they do in many countries for breaking their laws. Some are quick enough to say throw them out send them back when people break UK laws should we not respect other countries laws.

Not bad £25 a day , makes you think “no sweat” if you stay over by a few days plus a nice little earner for the french .
In this digital high tech age it does make me laugh seeing customs officials stamping paper .

£25 a day is a fair amount to stay in a country for a day!! Holiday visas in various countries are a heck of a lot cheaper than that. A 10 year visa to China is only £300!

I don't think a lot see it like that theres always a healthy interest on avoiding using angles Mort stickers avoiding cusoms restrictions on food avoiding getting speeding tickets etc. I bet a lot of the same people who would like to get away with French speeding tickets would be up in arms if French people coming here could do the same.

It is still very early days under the new rules but whatever is brought in by an individual member state will have to be agreed by all. Once you are in the Shengan zone to are free to roam unchecked. If you enter via Spain because they are "special" rules you will have to leave by Spain.
I think what Jim suggests is the likely outcome but 183 days will be the max for tax purposes, which some of the expats who went to live in the EU without getting proper paperwork have found out.

I agree with the first paragraph, Spain was just about the only country letting foreigners in - I wonder why?

Do you really think that the huge numbers of people normally in the Spanish bars are all out of campsites? The briefest of searches starts bringing up ads like these in English.

How dare you go back to the original point

The huge number of folk in Spanish bars..? They would still be able to take advantage of the hotel deal offering the discount for stays over 26 days. They've got 90 days to make use of the cheap sangria and San Miguel... How many folk do you know that either won't go because it is only 90 days or who would want to spend more than 90 days and would spend as much in the additional days as they did in the first 90? The numbers will be very low across the UK.

We spent October. November and part of December travelling through France in a few weeks into Spain. We avoid places like Benidorm (not my cup of tea) and ambled along the coast. Peniscola, Cambrils. Javea and other sites and finishing in Los Alcazares. Very few of the sites we stayed on had British vans there. We came across the odd few especially in Camping Valencia. Those we did meet were heading to Benidorm and some to Morrocco.

In fact when we told people in the UK we were off to Spain, they all mentioned Benidorm. Most of the campsites were near capacity and the one in Los Alcazares said they had no vacancies for the first three months of the year. I can see those who's business caters to the Brits ( English Breakfast and fish and chips) suffering but not those who don't. Most of the vans we encountered were predominantly German, Dutch or from Scaninavia. Most were there for at least four months. They like us were spending in the local economy. Most bars and restaurants were packed.

On a parallel theme, here in Lanzarote folk thought that tourism would suffer coz folk couldn't come here for 6 months.
But all the bars and restaurants all all busy enough.

We'll see what Jan/Feb/March brings.
We weren't stamped in or out of Lanzarote... Nor were our passports scanned as far as I know. I wonder if they were basing our arrival and departure on our flight arrangements from EasyJet?

One guy, talking to a newspaper. He's since resigned from his tourism position!

What about the hordes of young folk who would like to work on the Ski slopes , or get a summer repping job and such like ? They’re pretty much buggered with the 90/180 rule. There are a lot of people affected in many walks of life and ages.

Yes , that’s the way it works I think.

The thread seems very important judging by the amount of posts.
Why would it be appropriate for the thread to be deleted?
If you mean should my posts be deleted because they draw attention to the fact that we actually brought this on ourselves, fair enough.
I have no problem with that action if the administrator decides my posts should be deleted.
Deleting my posts doesn’t alter the fact that we are where we are, does i?
