On the A9 peage south of Valence, stopped at the large Avia truck park which is also an Aire, I parked beside 4 other motor homes, brightly light place about 100mtrs from the shop, in the morning a Dutch man said he’d been burgled but no sign of forced entry, he lost cards, cash and iPad, we said we can’t find our Halifax card we use for the peage, it then dawned on us we too had been robbed, no sign of forced entry to the drivers door, which we normally tie both doors together but last night we felt so safe we didn’t bother🥴 the elderly Dutch couple wanted to return home, they still had one bank card, I said” don’t let these bastards ruin your holiday as well “. And after they took a breath, they both agreed to carry on.
We will carry on with our travels, and don’t let complacency set in.

Thanks twoleftfeet. Hopefully you managed to cancel all cards that were stolen.
It’s bad enough when this type of thing happens at home, but I can tell you have the whereabouts to get it all sorted, and put it down to experience. (Don’t forget to gather details for your insurance).
Good on you to encourage the fellow MH’s to do the same, and not let the SCUM spoil your plans.

If you have your cards in your Apple/Google wallet as well as your physical card and they are lost or stollen whilst overseas on your holidays you can activate your new ones in your Apple wallet whilst away which is very handy indeed as I found this year whilst in Italy. Not all banks seemed that modern but some. It was certainly beyond Lloyds but Starling and and Santander did. Not that I’d use Lloyds abroad but I carry it as it’s who does my travel insurance.

That must be a scary feeling knowing someone has been in the van whilst you slept. I am a very light sleeper ( unless I have had a few 🍷🍷) so would probably wake if someone opened a door.
Just looking at options for internal security on our new van at the moment.
Hope the trip goes well from here on.

I'm sorry this has happened,

This has been mentioned time an time and it doesn't seem to change over so many years, Overnight on a AutoRoute aire and get robbed.

Any clues as to how they got in. Were ythe doors still locked in the morning?
Dreadful for you regardless of the financial losses hopefully being covered by insurance.

Thats just not true, I have spent many, many nights on motorway aires and not been robbed.

I've never spent a night in a motorway aire without an alarm set and or physical internal door locks, otherwise I might have been (y)

Twoleftfeet do you have a separate bedroom in your Moho?
was thinking the same, I have both seats partly turned (they don't fully turn) and as we have 2 front bench seats which we use as 2 singles i put the back off mine across the front of the seats so it sits in the well on one side and against the door on the other ,If travelling in France we also store the 2 camping chairs on the floor at the front we then pile the cushions on the seats so there is no way anyone would get in without disturbing us. Habitation door has a Milenco security lock on it ,and i have a safe for cards not in use.

I have to say, I have also spent many nights sleeping on French and Spanish motorway aires without issue. The biggest problem is sometimes the refrigerated truck or the TGV line you didn’t notice when you pulled in late.

Sorry to hear of your robbery Twoleftfeet ☹️

We’re in another motorway Aire this evening, we’ve also noticed in the past some refrigerator trucks moved away without us hearing, tonight we will secure the van as we should have done last night, and will sleep soundly, we always leave the bedroom door open but never heard a sound, cards and cash gone, we still have one car to carry on with, CARRY ON REGARDLESS 👍

Really sorry to hear of your experience.

Have you thought of leaving the autoroutes to find an aire? There are usually Aires in villages/towns within a few miles, and these are much safer bets.

Like you told the other people, don’t let it spoil your travels. Have a lovely holiday.

Assuming all doors locked how did they get in.

We were robbed a couple of years ago at the same site. We woke up to find two men in the MH. They jumped out and had a car waiting to whisk them away. Apparently that place is notorious for this type of thing. Having said that we have stayed at many other motorway aires with no problems at all.

Just check under your drivers or passenger door handle to see if you can feel a little indent under the lock position

Treat yourselves to these..

Cheap and they DO work, ear splitting and the only way to stop them is pop the pin back in...

One for each front door and one for hab door.... they are brilliant... (y)

We use these. Cheap and cheerful but small and foolproof

How do you do that carolyn with Santander and what is the process if they were stolen to be able to use the digital cards. I don’t use my phone to pay for anything but do have an iPhone

I have Lloyds bank app on I phone and I pad and can immediately stop debit/credit card and report stolen. In the event of temporary loss it can also be re activated.

Great idea. Thanks just ordered some. Looks easier than the ratchet strap we currently use.

We were robbed on a motorway aire in Marseille. Doors locked and alarm set. Wife is a very light sleeper and they still got in and took everything. These people are experts.
