Hey guys!

I've burned through my little 6kg calor bottle pretty quickly with this cold weather.

I had heard that it was possible and or cheaper to have a log refillable tank installed?

Would you have any advice on how this is done?

Many thanks

Luke

Gaslow and gasit both sell refillable kits., sometimes used ones pop up on eBay etc. Easy to fit if you are competent, if not get the professionals to sell and fit for you. Does save you a lot of money with refillable.

Go for it.... And don't listen to the Doom & Gloom merchants that autogas ( I still use that to differentiate between pumped and bottled gas) is a dying breed and that ALL suppliers are removing pumps and that you are wasting your money because this time next year you will not be able to fill it up.
Yes a lot are removing pumps however there are some that are renewing old pumps and indeed some installing them from scratch
The beauty of this system is you don't have to empty bottle before you top up, so you just have to get into the habit of topping up whenever you pass a pump when out and about...I always fill mine on way home from a trip so I have full bottles for next outing.
AUTOGAS OR SIMILAR IS HERE TO STAY

lukebolger .. just reread your original post.. you say "refillable tank".. are you refering to an underslung tank or refillable bottles....
Are you aware you can get refillable bottles....... NOT STANDARD CALORS AND REFILL....

These guys have a good write up and a video on filling. I am not recommending them specifically as I have not used them. But the page is useful.

This is our refillable LPG tank that I fitted under our MH. It holds 38ltrs which is about 20kg.

You can have them proffesionaly installed or if you are a competent DIY-er, then you can install them yourself.

If buying second hand bottles make sure they are well within date, they only have a 10 year life. I have seen some online sales where the bottle dates can be seen in the pictures if you look carefully. Sometimes they only have a couple of years life left and are way over priced. Also check what size bottles will fit in your gas locker, the bottle outlet needs to be below the regulator not above it.

Another limiting factor may be payload weight. Alugas bottles are lighter than the steel Gasit types. I have 2x14kg Alugas ones and don’t need to fill up very often.

how do you isolate the feed for eurotunnel?
One of these would open up the gas locker for storage.

john
We have an on/off valve fitted underneath near our sliding door step. The tunnel people seem satisfied with that being off and I know some report that they just turn off the inside isolation taps for each appliance.

Download app

Also list in uk
Another handy App to have is.................... https://www.autogas.app/ downloadable for different devices. (y)

We went from an 80 x litre bulk tank on the Hymer, to 2 x 22 x litre Gaslow cylinders on the Flair, thinking that we might struggle. We didn't, but we do have to think about topping up more regularly than previously.

We too top up on the way back from a trip out, (and the same for diesel), in readiness for the next escape. ;)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Safefill is another option. With these you can take them out to fill them.
Yes, we have two of those. I use them for the caravan and home BBQ.

We have refillable on the motorhome. Have done for 20 years. Can’t beat it

I fitted a gas shut-off valve that I operate with a handle just under the side skirt of our van to turn our gas on and off.
You can also buy a 12v solenoid gas valve to do the same thing.

One of the reasons I fitted the underslung tank was to free up a locker and also to move some weight forward on our van.

I had a GasIt bottle system fitted, two bottle the same size as the normal larger Calor bottles. I don't remember what it cost but was fitted professionally at Mullacott Caravans.

I tended to use a lot of gas, with Freedom Camping in Summer to keep the fridge cool and in Winter to keep the water warm and prevent the safety valve dropping.

I think Calor bottles were about £40 at the time, plus the back ache of getting them out of the locker and hefting the full ones back in.

So I decided to invest in refillables.

After a cold week away plus other trips the gauges indicated that I had 1.5 empty bottles, so just been to Morrisons and filled both, 18 litres for £14.36p, less than half a Calor bottle cost.

Excellent products. Ultra light and you only need three extra nozzles for all countries of Europe refill. I have used these for years.

I am using Safefill.. I have a pair of the midsize cylinders.
Yesterday I filled one at Morrisons (Pinchbeck) and it was 79.9p/lt.
13.58lt (6.92kg) cost £10.85.
That’s less than a third of the current Calor price.…. 😏

Plenty of places to fill up but granted not many petrol stations stock it now

I fitted gaslo when I got my van and it has more than paid for its self.If I was doing it today I would probably go for an underslung tank and free up the gas locker for storage. as for refilling, it's no more problematic than planning a service stop and you can just top up when you can

We live in the sticks but have 3 Morrisons with fuel stations within 12 miles. All do autogas and we can fill Safefill’s at any…. Only 0.2p difference between them!

Yeah but I hear Morrisons are taking their pumps out soon but not confirmed yet so there is still hope

Quickest and easiest option is to buy the largest Safefill bottles that will fit into your gas locker.

We had a gallows system fitted when we bought our van. Cylinders in cylinder cupboard and fill point on side of van. Besides advantages already mentioned we didn’t want to be lugging heavy cylinders around.
Prices may vary, but we tend to go for convenience of refill. Interestingly the A1 filling stations south of us in Lincs were cheaper than the Esso garage in the middle of town.
Besides filling up when out and about you get to know where your local garages are. So for us, if necessary, we could take a detour to Brownhills motorhomes (about 25 mins away)

Sure I read or heard brown hills have just put a bulk gas refill tank in, possibly they see the appeal to motorhomes!

I heard that over 12 months ago, they’re all still there! I’m guessing it’s more FB Chinese whispers…..
