Prostate cancer. A useful resource.

Last day of my challenge today 👍 delighted and slightly amazed to confirm I have done 11K or more steps every day this month

Many thanks for support, moral and financial it has helped 👍🙏

Yes and no. If you have a consultation, a PR (per rectum) would be expected, but you’re not going to want that every year (?) and the PSA yearly with the other bloods will show a trend.
There is a machine which will measure your flow just by peeing on it! The point I’m making is that any change from your normal routine, be it urine or bowel or even lung, is something to take note of, particularly of sudden or quick onset; it does not necessarily mean it is sinister but worth advice.
I had a PR exam when having a cystoscopy a few years ago when checking out blood in my urine. There were no issues and, while I wouldn’t want such an exam annually, I wouldn’t be averse to such an annual check up given the better diagnostic outcome than purely periodic PSA values. Any minimal discomfit is a small price to pay for early discovery of problems.

March the Month

Daughters and Son in Law did this too not sure where thay finished up but Ken's Walkers were 8th on The Prostrate Cancer Web Site. So well done to everyone who took part. They are all having a rest today

Thanks for all your replies on the PSA front, makes interesting reading. Good luck to everyone undergoing treatment. The thing that keeps us going is the urologist said "you die with it rather thank of it"

I'm just looking forward to being able to walk better (tumours on spine) and climb the steps into the MoHo. Fortunately the wife likes driving it.

take care everyone and get tested even if you have no symptoms.

I started my hormone tablets last month, had my first injection last week and will be having a three month injection on 2nd May

I also agreed to be considered for a medical trial, my logic was this can only be a help for future patients my own family included, I have four grandsons 🙏

No obvious effects of the hormone treatment although I am aware of an ache from my groin area which I hope is the cancer reacting

Today I received my invitation to join the trial , not read right through yet but unless I find something very bad I will be going ahead, hoping it will speed up my own treatment

1 in 3 on the trial will get the same radiotherapy treatment as I would have had anyway

1 in 3 get higher dose

1:3 get higher dose plus lymph node treatment

I will be told which route I am going down

In my stomach, I was told there might be some hardness under the skin where injected and I did, about the size of a peanut , but it’s gone now

I did the March the month fund raising and started my tablets mid month, I did struggle to get on with my walks most days, but think that might have been the weather as much as a side effect , but mostly I don’t think I can tell any difference since starting on hormones apart from total lack of any erection since 🤔 he wasn’t overly active before but now decidedly dormant 🙄

side effect
Of hormone injections i had zoldex , side effects differ from man to man , some get plenty others zero ? . All listed on net .

My first was done in the arm but subsequent ones in the stomach, alternate sides. The nurse who did my second said that men receiving Prostap should have the injection in the stomach but where the same hormone treatment is used for women with breast cancer it should be done in the arm. Apparently it said that in the clinical instructions.
I don't know about the other versions of this type of treatment.

Had a psa test on Monday at a CHAPS venue in Felixstowe cost £30, this is the 4th time I have been to one of their sessions since 2014, all previous results have been under .5 which is well under the average, so waiting for the latest results now, to see if its changed.

They are operating a traffic light system now, if your in the green then they email you for a test every 3 years, yellow every 2 years and red every year. Over 75 no emails at all as the wisdom is if you haven't got cancer by 75 years old, you may die with it, but not because of it.
They believe its important to build up a a history of your psa level over a longtime, then if it suddenly changes you can get it investigated.

I have had 3 x monthly zoladex in the stomach. Hot flushes like there is no tomorrow. Seem to want to eat more too. I have my first 3 monthly dose next week. So looking forward to it . And I must remember to tell my better half if she doesn't use it she'll lose it

Has anyone had recurrent UTIs when self catheterising.
I am getting them almost monthly the GP sorts them quickly with antibiotics but it is wearing me down the GPs don't seem to have an answer.

The four weekly hormone injections have put pay to any sex life but I considered it a small price to pay, considering the alternative.

It has taken my PSA reading from 2834 to 1.4 now.

I have just tried to contact them, they are not offering a chat option other than online

Got through to MacMillan who were brilliant but suggested I talk to my doctor about new pains / symptoms , amazingly rang at 4 got an appointment for 4.40 today 🤔👍

I have developed significant lower back pain that might be a sign the cancer has spread

Hormone reaction so far seems to be limited to tiredness, or in Bev speak even more lazy 😳😁

I am now 28 days into my hormone treatment , the lower back issue my doctor has assured me must be muscular as cancer spread could not happen so quickly, good to know as I have been worried since my biopsy procedure in January where my prostate got prodded and poked, resulting in internal bleeding, cancer spread seemed inevitable to my unknowing head 🤔

What I am left with is a dull ache from my abdomen / prostate area, did / does anybody else have similar? I have not had a prostatectomy

The further in I get the less I am finding it all quite as scary , but I have not coped very well in my head with my diagnosis

Hi David. Unless your original Gleason score was high/very high I would find it difficult to see the aches are related to a spread. I am not an expert by the way. Just on the same path.

It was 5/4 and described as aggressive , the consultant didn’t recommend surgery due to location and risk of spread, I think that notion stuck in my head

Your concern is understandable. I presume you were told the cancer cells were still contained within the prostate (if the consultant referenced a 'risk' of spread).

Like others have already advised I would encourage you to contact the specialist nurses and team for further reassurance and/or investigation.

What blood test ? Since my biopsy I have had a body scan but no other tests

I asked my cancer nurse if they would be doing regular PSA checks, they said they don’t need to, they know the hormone treatment will shrink the cancer

I must have raised my eyebrows as she added you will have to trust me, we know, with a smile . Reassuring but blood test confirmation would be nice. I am hoping that by going on the trial there will be more checks 🤔👍

Hi DavidG58

Interestingly after my Biopsy I was given 4 weeks of scans and given a number of Blood Test forms. Subsequently I have phone calls, now Annually, from the main Doctor at the Urology centre where scans were done and I use the Forms to enabling her to have Blood Data before her call. I am currently having Zoladex injections every 12 weeks and I understand that at some point, after maybe 3 years, they may stop the Injections and I think via blood test results keep an ey on how I am doing.

Since the treatment started my PSA value has dropped dramatically and has been below 0.10 for some time now.

We're you advised what your blood test results were? I Assume they were checking PSA levels.?

It's another psa test
