Prostate cancer. A useful resource.

Update to my face to face meeting Tuesday had a phone call from barts yesterday afternoon inviting me to have a ct scan 03/05

What is the CT scan for? I have only had an MRI pre diagnosis then a gamma body scan when cancer confirmed by biopsy, but now I am just about to have my first 3 month jab and wait without further checks 🤔

I have got a nagging abdominal discomfort that I presume is cancer / treatment related but not going away so I am going back to see my doctor

Lower back pain went so happy that was muscular , but this abdominal pain has been there since before my cancer diagnosis, it did seem to get worse post biopsy which has caused me some anxiety

Pre diagnosis I would not have been worried about this , but now knowing 1:6 of those diagnosed die within 3 years from prostate cancer, although it is common and usually successfully treated, sometimes it isn’t

They scan you to see the best way to zap you as we have all got the same bits but not always in the same place

I’ve never had so many people looking at my nether regions since communal showers at school! Dr Henny was nice and the two students didn’t say much but Charlotte was allowed to see if her finger detected the same situation as his (we all have to learn somewhere).
Rebecca deposited the biopsies into three jars while Paul tried to keep me thinking about other things by chatting and asking me questions.
I’m not sure what Mary did but we all had to persuade her not to Google “how much is a hitman?” after I joked that there would be consequences if Dr Henny hurt me too much.

All in all it was a much better experience than I had anticipated. The worst bit was when I started shaking from the adrenaline as the anaesthetic wore off.

Two or three weeks until I get my results 🤞

(It took me three attempts to balance the pad in my pants before I realised that there was a piece of paper which could be removed to reveal an adhesive strip 🙄)

not my experience i had 3 injections then an ultrasound sensor inserted then a staple gun inserted and click click 9 times all tools removed bum wipe and pushed to recovery for tea and biscuits told you can go home after you have passed water

Pretty much my experience, suprising how you soon settle down in the birthing chair chatting to the four medics, one a trainee.

had a good laugh with the 2 nurses and the doctor over the birthing chair i said to them when i have the baby if its a boy i will call it joe after the doctor and if its a girl we will have to toss up for the girls name

Low amount usually 12 😂 my mate said it was like a medieval torture and he also was unlucky to end up with an infection ,he didnt take the anti infection drugs at the right time his fault !!!!

Good humour ! Well done .all in a fays work for them !

The numbing cream ?
I usually try to write what I mean: in this case the word was "anaesthetic"!

"You usually have this test in the outpatient department under local anaesthetic."

Perhaps your doctor had a different technique?

Yes I had a transrectum biopsy , where they just use numbing cream /liquid

Just had recent blood test for PSA its now come down to 41 oncologist pleased to see it coming down, was over 700 on diagnosis (Nov 2023). Staying on the hormone injections for now, Chemo is still a possibility but been taken off the triplet therapy as some concerns over the Darolutamide (Nubeqa R) hormone. Anyone here heard of any problems with that?

Unfortunately havent heard of that ? I should imagine more injections will bring it down even more , how many injections so far 2? Just had my 6 monthly psa check , 5yrs since treatment finished , reading 0.22 this week .

I had my first three months injection into my stomach last week

I was told at my first one month jab and again last week that I might get a small lump under the skin. First one I did, about the size of a peanut that lasted about a week and gave me no trouble

This time I have one about the size of a walnut and tender, I was concerned it felt about the right size to be the contents of the syringe sat and not distributing as it is still the same size a week later

Been to my doctors yesterday who has assured me it’s just a reaction to the foreign body, being the medicine injected

I am not convinced but have to trust the doctor, I think in part the location this time being right on my belt line might be why it is so tender , but doesn’t account for it being bigger

Anybody else get a similar reaction?

It will go quickly . Have you taken on board tips early on in this thread , you will find them handy . Good luck

I was probably fortunate that the possibility of my Prostate Cancer was identified when my PSA value was 11 so a lot lower than some on here. I was initially put on Hormone Tablets and the side affect of those was Itchy Tits 😂. After the PC was confirmed I was switched to the Zoladex Hormone Injections in my Stomach every 12 weeks, Itchy Tits gone, which have been administered without issue with only slight bleeding on injection, I have blood thinners, and no sign of any reaction. I had 20 RT sessions Jan/Feb 2022 following which I was prescribed some Vitamin D tablets and my subsequent PSA values have significantly reduced, for example the last one was 0.02.

During my latest Telecon with the Urology Doctor where the RT was done, as I had been advised was likely before the RT, they propose to stop the Zoladex Injections from this October and reduce the Vitamin D intake to maybe during the winter months . As a result of this change they indicated that my PSA value will rise but they have provided me with the necessary blood forms so that they can continue to monitor the PSA value and provided it does not exceed 2.5 it is unlikely they will propose any further treatment as necessary.

A PC sufferer I know who recently started treatment has their every 12 injection in their Arm using a different Hormone and they have had bruising and lumps so maybe it depends on the Hormone and where it is administered. I my case there is plenty of Fat on my Stomach to inject the Hormone into. 😂

Just had the robot surgery feeling better than I expected. Now lying in a very clever bed with loads of buttons, may be a bit heavy for the van though. Tried to add photos of the various drains etc but the porn filter stopped it.

Well done good luck ! Bless the surgeon

After many weeks pestering my hospital for confirmation of a date to begin my RT I went into the RT department personally. Wow what a difference, within three days I had negotiated the whole calendar of my treatment 'planning meeting', CT scan ( with the possibility of a second if the first is not satisfactory) then four plus weeks holiday in Europe in the van starting my RT two days after our return.

All I could get from telephone enquiries was " We will call you when we have a slot available".

Moral of story, don't be put off by a call centre, go and see them in person. It made all the difference in my case.

On the 6 monthly one, injection in the arm no after effects from it the first time due another in June its Decapeptyl 22.5 mg. There seem to be quite a few different ones about.

A good example of the advice my Consultant gave me. Take charge, read up and be informed, it’s your illness, be proactive and don’t wait to be contacted.
He obviously knows there are communication flaws in the system.

I agree, take charge. I needed two blood tests a week apart before robot prostate surgery. Had the first one then op cancelled for three weeks (robot had broken down) so no second sample taken. Four days to go before rescheduled date and still no contact about blood tests. Phoned up, " Oh yes, can you come in this afternoon". Live nearby so no problem and op now done. But did wonder if they would have gone ahead if I just turned up on the operation date.
