Prices in cafes and restaurants

Had our full English this morning with toast and coffee in the fabulouse Radlett Cafe, two of us including bubble toast and coffee in what is a quality greasy spoon. Have just asked my lovely lady what she paid. £16.50 plus a tip. I think that is excellent value. 👍

You would think it was good value, you didn’t pay for it 🙄😂

...so eat in your MoHo
Rather defeats the claim that we bring spend/money at destinations, so they should welcome us all with open arms
We eat in the camper meals we prepare ourselves at sensible cost instead of rip off cafe prices. That enables us to go to very good expensive restaurants locally where we quite enjoy that different rip off. We like to choose where and when we spend our hard earned instead of constantly having it prised from our grip.

All this cost of living stuff is all media hype and people jumping on a band wagon… Cornwall supposedly poorest in the uk… roundabouts blocked with cars because of the queues at mc Donald’s kfc and Starbucks… cafes restaurants all full and the shopping trolleys full of stuff with what I would call unnecessary, I know a few people on benefits and there still down the pub most lunchtimes drinking 5-10 pints a day while outside smoking fags and a takeaway on the way home…

I personally don’t know anyone that is struggling….

I favour a ready cooked chicken from a supermarket, they are usually quite cheap and with Cristy rolls can easily make a lunch for two for two days, or with a salad or some veg dinner and lunch the next day.

I like that too, but with Pitta bread. Not had it for ages though. If I buy cheap chicken, my youngest daughter would slap me about the head and neck with anything to hand.

Yep when I am down there I do let them know they have my sympathy about house prices. Cost of living is ridiculous.
That’s one of the things about up here. We don’t have then weather but if your in a fairly decent job then quality of life is canny.

Mind you I haven’t met many on less than £30k to be honest. Very few in fact.
Today while looking for some ad rates information with a magazine publisher I saw a job advertised with said mag pub, job based in London, with a starting salary of £23,000. There's no way that's enough to enable someone to live either in London, or to afford to commute in. And it's not unusual in publishing, where there still seems to be an absurd idea that people will 'work for the love of the industry'.

Everyone has a choice.
I won't have a desert in a restaurant as they are invariably overpriced for what you get.....£5 or £6 for a thin slice of a large cake or 2 scoops of ice-cream.
That cake would make the owner maybe £80 and cost less than £20 to buy in or even make on the premises.
Restaurant and cafe mark-up should be five times the cost. They have high overheads and lots of waste so while it may sound like a lot they have to at worst break even and at best make a profit.

Met up with a mate for a beer the other day - two pints of Moretti £12:40 - not sustainable - pub still busy on weekends but might as well be shut when we went.

This is why places like Greggs and Wetherspoons are always busy.

Keep in mind 'Spoons are hundreds of millions in debt and have around 20 pubs up for sale.

Remember 'Pile it high and sell it cheap' Woolworths?

Jewish penicillin are you sure? I find that extremely offensive. Shame on you.
Really?
It’s an extremely old 'joke' about Jewish soup being a cure all for all ailments.

First heard by me sometime in the 60's..

Suggest you stay indoors and avoid all social media.

So because it’s old it must be ok? I suggest you think before posting.

WTF why ? That’s what all my family and friends have called it for years and some of them are Jewish. It’s well known in the Jewish community as a food to give to the sick for its easy eating and nutritious properties. 🥴

I wonder if they have the "we need more income, lets put the prices up" mindset when instead they need to reduce the prices and get more people willing to go in. Give me a flask and my own grub any day.
Sadly a lot of places do this. I'm constantly amazed at wee craft shops etc too trying to sell a tartan cushion for £30 somewhere in the Highlands that you can buy for £10 on ebay and have it delivered to your door included.

I'm guessing some eedjits must pay it otherwise they'd not do it.

Quite a few years ago sat down for a coffee at the cafe opposite the casino in Monte Carlo, looked at the menu and made a quick exit.
I should've done the same before ordering three 'end of trip' brandies with my son and DIL at a table on the quay at Honfleur.
I don't know how the waiter kept a straight face when giving me the bill.

I do , and I don't feel the slightest bit guilty about it either. I don't support this view that because you were fortunate enough to be born in a place you own it. Or that it's visitors to that places job to boost there economy. I'm more of the earth is free and we are privileged to be a small part of life on it. It belongs to everyone and no one should have the right to stop any other person from visiting any part of it.

A minority view granted but one I will always hold nevertheless

Never even earnt ½ of that when I was working.
Really? How on earth did you manage to buy a house where you are and replace mh etc?

My last proper job I earned around £30k a year and I'm still skint lol

My sympathies - I understand as we closed our business . Now is the time to support small businesses or lose them
You can only support them if you can afford it 🤷‍♂️ and sadly these days there are more people who can't than there is those who can.

But you are respectful of the local residents - whether you agree with their 'ownership' or not. AFAIK, you never stay where you're going to cause conflict, and move on if asked.

The point I was trying to make is about those who park up on a 'Marine Parade', maybe for days on end, who then complain when restrictions are imposed, claiming the local businesses will now lose a ton of money due to the anti-motorhome attitude.

This is less true... but fits your chip/bias.
No he is in fact correct.far more expensive & higher price rises in the Uk than here in spain where I live. France has always had eye watering prices to me.
yes prices have risen even here but not on the scale of the UK:
To be honest for many years now i have wondered why people businesses even bother in the Uk with the exhorbitant rent then throw in even dearer council buainess rates then scammed for commercial waste disposal etc, etc. Even here in spain where the paperwork is eye watering just to even start a business the costs are still far less.
It’s not much fun waking up on a Monday morning knowing you have to make £50k by Friday to pay the bills, then hopefully a bit more on top.
I was told, when in business, that if you think like that you should not even consider being self employed or owning a Business. You should be an employee.
This is why places like Greggs and Wetherspoons are always busy.
£3,30 for 4 sausage rolls . 5 jam doughnuts for 65p ; that's breakfast & tea sorted:laughing:
