Ouch! A1 Newark... Hire Motorhome destroyed. (Nobody seriously hurt as far as I know).

So what you are claiming is in effect if we choose a static point. Say a sign post. You are trying to tell me that more vehicles can pass that point in one hour if they are all travelling at say 60 mph than would pass the point if they were all travelling at say 80 mph. Maths didn’t work like that when I went to school.
I wonder why the fastest car/ driver wins the motor racing. Surely with your reckoning the slower drivers/cars should get there at the same time as the faster ones.
Makes me wonder why for thirty years I bothered with the blues and twos if going faster didn’t get me to the incident quicker.
Because using blues and twos every one clears the road for you ..Traffic dictates journey times and the smooth attentive driver who concentrates manages to miss red lights and anticipate what many idiots are doing in front..Many times l have joined the M One at the M 10 and poodled at my legal limited 56 mph and have passed a vehicle miles up the motorway who flashed past me earlier who is in heavy traffic in the busiest outside lane...Tortoise and hair comes to mind..I never noticed that when going on UK holidays in my car that I got any where quicker than in my truck.Mind you when your being paid you get on with it.BUSBY.

Not necessarily speed but driving too close and truckers are good at it.
HGVs should be fitted with automatic speed related anti tailgating/collision devices, many lives could be saved.
New daf do have this, if you’re to close the brakes come on. It’s ok but if someone comes quick undertakes on a slip road and cuts in front close. The truck slams on the brakes, not the driver and try’s to put them through the screen.

The more automation you fit the more the driver will depend on it and pay even less attention. Only full autonomy will stop accidents.

Well you did manage to answer one of my questions re getting somewhere quicker by going faster. Only one mind.
If you were flying to Australia would you get there quicker flying in a plane at 500 mph or one flying at 300 mph.

Too much Technology,,that's why driving standards are so bad.BUSBY.

I think it’s just leading on to driverless trucks. Testing the equipment in trucks in situations like this and then they know how it will go without a driver.

It can be a shock to be overtaken by cops on a blue light run doing 130+

I don't think they fully realise the startling effect this can have on a driver pootling along not paying 100% attention to mirrors.
I had to drive a Police Van up the M1 on Monday.
Unbelievable what you saw.
The speedometer was true and the van was 3500Kg + so I was driving at an actual 60MPH (first thing a colleague checked). I had to knock off the cruise every so often to allow the bunchers past.
Later, joined a city motorway which was 3 lane with a motorhome (3500+) in the outside lane who quickly moved back into the near lane. The road then went down to 2 lanes where everyone then slowed down boxing me in.
Apart from the bunchers there were at least 6 vehicles which by their own actions felt they were speeding.
Funny how I was able to get out of junctions and was never cut up.

The optimum speed for a motorway to maximise throughput is something like 18mph. This allows vehicles to enter and exit without having to apply their or others brakes.

Of course you and I know the answer to that.I did do maths at school nearly to A level but failed..What I am saying is that going like the campers is not the quickest method because to cover ant journey quickly you need skill and concentration not boot to the floor. How come trucks cover distances day in day out restricted to 56 mph in times that many drivers can only dream of..I used to do Southend on Sea in a truck that was flat out at 47 mph quicker back in the 70s than my father in law (Don't know why but he went there on holiday) managed it in his posh car.Flying and motor car racing don't come in to the equation because no oncoming traffic,no congestion.no traffic cops.BUSBY😁

How often does one ’get their head down’ while the partner carries on driving, I wonder?
Never

It’s also a very good argument for having pets properly restrained. It could be your pooch lying in the road....😢

Or worse still giving the driver/passenger serious injuries as it flies forward at 60mph slamming into the back of a seat never designed to take this sort of force.

Shouldn’t you all be more worried about how flimsy the vehicle was rather than the
problem with the road.
Just think what could have happened if the lorry had ridden up over the chassis and flattened the cab as well.
Looks like it had a good go! The chassis is broken between the axles.... 😢

Most vehicles don’t have the benefit of blues n 2’s to scare everyone else out of their way! Why do they have variable speed limits on the M25 and other places? Initially, it’s to try and keep the traffic moving. We all know that on a busy motorway/dual carriageway, the traffic goes in waves.... if it’s not evened out, you just fly from one bottleneck to another! The A34 had no variable speed limits or cameras when I was travelling it regularly, and it was notorious!

Would have been no good back in my day
A computer could not hand ball 20 tonnes of sacks off or rope and sheet the load.. BUSBY😂😂

Sounds like the A303/A34 interchange. They should reduce the throughline on the A303 to one lane to give joining traffic a fighting chance. Entry is a very tight bend, steeply uphill, with little more than 50m merge zone with A303 traffic bombing through at 80mph.
Spot on, it's a death trap.

You can’t use ropes now, health and safety. It has to be straps or it’s not a secure load.

****ing dangerous even in cars & should be able to be turned off.

More nonsense.

I know which i would trust the most but straps are easier..Used to like a set of sylvesters when carrying timber or steel..BUSBY.

And if you do a double hitch you have halved the strength they now say. And you’re not allowed to climb up on the back of the trailer or load unless you’re in a full arrest harness. Whole new world now.

Don't think I could hack it now,,too regimented..Sometimes I didn't see my gaffer for weeks when I was on coal and scrap..Paid for what the wagon earned,,bodged repairs, changed your own flat tyres I loved it..BUSBY.

Saw the tailbacks from this as we made our way north to Yorkshire this morning. Let’s hope no one was hurt, but seems unlikely.
I love driving on the A1,even in the motorhome, you have to concentrate and anticipate every second.
PS.Why does it always rain in Yorkshire? :reel:;)
It's the only thing they get for free thy now's lad

Rain in Yorkshire? Try going over the tops into Lancashire! It’s no coincidence they have a village called ‘Water’! 😁😜🤪

I'm sure sylvesters were banned (or at least taken off the approved restraint list for steel) a few years ago
Glad I got out of trucking, I still know people who do it and it's not fun now......its like a proper job 😁

There is % earnings, and job rates etc . I doubt many would risk repair or wheels change as paranoid of getting sued if something goes wrong. Better to have someone else to blame.

What you’re suggesting then is because one vehicle/driver cannot use the road correctly then every other vehicle
Hi.
Half a loaf is better than non................

I would never have stuck it if it was like a proper job.My years on TOTAL OIL were boring but the money was so good and easily earned,,didnt rearly enjoy my time there.BUSBY.

What you’re suggesting then is because one vehicle/driver cannot use the road correctly then every other vehicle that managed to use that section of road correctly has to suffer reduced speed limits therefore longer journey times. I would rather just see the problem driver dealt with appropriately than everyone else having to change.
Bit late dealing with that one driver after a fatality,,Better to do the sensible thing and reduce the speed limit..BUSBY.

In serious road accidents on dual carriageways and motorways, there is usually a HGV involved. Across many countries in Europe there are lower maximum speeds for HGVs, and dependent on weight of load being carried, much lower speed limits. Why do our Government continue to allow this carnage on our roads day after day. It is simple physics, the heavier the vehicle, the longer the distance required to stop.

Perhaps they should have a man in front waving a red flag . It’s to many people living in to small a space all trying to get to the same place at the same time.

Hi.
" Taken off the Steel ". I remember hitching a ride back to the lorry early one morning,I could hear this lorry coming and thought... " If it stops to give me a lift,i will be back at the lorry,,,,Real SOON " Into sight came CTC Transport Scunthorpe ? ( YEARS ago ). I lowered my Log book,thinking... " If he hits anything,we will both be killed by Flat steel chopping the cab off......... He STILL STOPPED !. When i got out at the " Hawthorns Cafe A38 Burton way " I thanked him very much and then thanked my maker silently. Steel and Planed Timber..........Use up as much Rope, ratchet straps,Chains,as you like/got. Once it starts to move thats it. I got out of it when.. Jennifer...Came down the yard and prised my fingers off the steering wheel...Age ? about 75.... Oh Happy Days.... ( The DRIVING SILLY !!! :ROFLMAO: 🚛🚛🚛🚛🚛🚛(y) ) The marriage.... whats that song ? " Some days are Diamonds, some days are stone.........:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::love::love:🚛" Truthfully... Jennifer is a Diamond Geezer..Ess ..PROPER !! XX
Tea Bag + Support from (El )..Conde Noble.vinho Tinto 86 cents a Litre !!:ROFLMAO::love::love::love:
PS... DON'T Tell Jennifer. ;) ;););)

Whats wrong with just reducing the speed limit if the current one is dangerous?
Because doing something about the hazard is better than just putting a band-Aid on it?.
Yes I know the speed limit for a non restricted vehicle so they shouldn’t be doing 80 😊
Welcome to the REAL world?. Where the Dicks think they are not bound by the rules for us lesser mortals?.

Bottom line is you cannot beat the Mk1 Eyeball, and the computer behind it. Despite all the Hype about A-I, Computers are ONLY a tool.

I`ve seen Steel roped before to-day, and only just recently too!. Ratchet Straps as well. We had Chains at Struthers, and got a real bollocking if we didn't do it "proper".
