Yaaay I got a reply. Cheers Robbie.

Someone’s already most likely mentioned it but it would be a good idea to put any future signage in several languages.

Welcome Robbie and thank you for taking the time to reply and look at the site. A wealth of information, experience and views on here so if you’ve got time to look through the threads you will find lots of peoples experiences both in Scotland and throughout Europe.?

my fourpennorth now sent:

It seems to me that Scotland has a real success on their hands with the NC500 that at the moment is bringing much needed tourist income from all over the world. The way to ensure this continues to be a success is that people go home ansd tell their friends 6what a great time they had and put their comments on social media etc.
As a very experienced motorhomer I'm aware that there have been problems on the route because Scotland is not geared up to cope with the number of motorhome s using it. In my opinion Scotland has a great opportunity to consolidate this growth if handled correctly. What I would suggest is having a look at what New Zealand has done in creating Freedom Camping areas that are basicallywell located carparks that permit overnight stays, they can easily enough be pay and display like many of the French aires and German Stellplatze. This allows you a cheap and easy answer to the immediate problem and more control over where the motorhomes go, keeps them out of the smaller villages and clogging up laybys etc.
Regarding water and toilet, again NZ have an excellent scheme where only certified ‘self contained ‘ motorhome s are allowed to use the freedom camping places and they provide public dump stations generally close to public toilets and also some of the filling stations offer it as either a paid service or you get a free dump when you fill up with fuel.
Why should you do this when you could just ban it? Motorhome rs tend to be people with time and disposable income, thousands of UK motorhome s go every year to France Spain Germany etc and use a mixture of ‘aires' alongside regular campsites, many UK pubs are now allowing motorhome s to overnight in their carparks if they patronise the pub and dven some garden centres and farm shops because its good for business.
To get a feel for the potential you could have a look at the camper contact website?
I would love to have written more or have a discussion however at this moment I'm on holiday in Sri Lanka. Please feel free to email if I could help some more.

I've been thinking about the 6 metre thing. Canterbury aire is door to door and regularly full so Canterbury council must have found a way round it

Yes, I made reference to this ‘constraint’ in my reply.

I would think it would be a killer to financial sustainability of a parking space, I would say a van width was more sensible and effectively doubles the capacity.

a sign saying 'parking at your own risk' cover it?

Maybe no signs at all, nor any markings on the ground.
or just
” this area is designated for motorhome parking. Please be responsible and leave no litter.

or
even better

Have a goood time, enjoy, spend your money in the local town, sleep well.

And all we ask is in return is please leave no litter or mess.

I do like the idea of unmarked out but worry that people will park selfishly

The area designated for MHs at Canterbury P+R has never had any litter, except when there were only small bins for the Car park and people had to leave bags on the ground around them. Then Colin the CPs Manager, who does listen to us, arranged a large wheelie bin in a hut - I was first to use it, but unbeknown to us first users they had forgotten to put the bin inside for a few days.

I think that where proper facilities are provided the MH fraternity will use them responsibly.

Another observation is that now they have taken down the barriers to enable MHs to access the overflow parking area the income has probably gone up so there is more in the budget. Certainly in my meeting on site with Colin he was telling me the new MH area at the P+R Wincheap will have more spaces than existing New Dover Road and two service points.

The indications are that the Council consider that MH provision is financially sustainable. Highlands and Scotland generally could learn a lot. They must have enough space up there.

If Robbie from Fife reads this I would like to say to him I could put you in touch with Colin Ferris at Canterbury who is very approachable and I am sure he could give you advice on his experience of being responsible for Canterbury's approach.

Last time I was at the Canterbury P&R aire (Nov 2019) some idiot had dumped his black waste in the grey water drain. It seems anything less than a borne will bring abuse to parking areas.

That grid and chamber is intended for both grey and black, so he was fine. There is no special black waste disposal there.

OK, good feedback, thanks. However, what I saw was a right mess. The dumper had not removed the grate.

I'm frequently dumbfounded by the inability of perfectly reasonable to perform relatively straightforward tasks.

To be fair if someone is a first time visitor and unless one saw another user remove the grating one might think it is fixed, although the strap might give a clue.

It is after all not a usual arrangement. G-RMPS had not twigged its dual use.

Joe put that strap on the grid when we were there about 3 years or so ago so it's lasted very well. The bit of rope that was originally attached to it was really manky and had been getting shorter and shorter. In all the years we've been using Canterbury P&R we've only seen someone not take the grate off a couple of times so in the scheme of things that's quite a small minority of users.

Agree the rope was getting past its sell by date, so thanks to Joe.

Colin tells me there will be proper borne-style facilities at the new facility at Wincheap P+R.
