Number plates with eu sign and uk

Not wishing to be flippant or cause offence but wouldn't I'M be more memorable? IF UK causes confusion, I'll bet GBM does too?
Sometimes people scratch their heads, similar to GBJ, GBG, for Jersey and Guernsey I suppose.

Craig

No more so than GBJ for Jersey or GBG for Guernsey... both of which are also still legal, for the same reason as Simsy56 said, they're part of the British Isles, but not part of the UK, being 'Crown Dependencies' which are self-governing.

Don’t forget GBZ

...........Gibraltar

My plates don't have any country markings on them. I have a GB and a UK sticker on the back. We were GB when we went out and changed to UK over there so I thought I'd just keep both. Unfortunately the last 3 letters of my plate are FOK so with the UK sticker after it reads...
FOK UK

The only problem with not having country markings on the plate itself is that no one can tell where you are from from the front. The number of MH owners on campsites that look quizzingly at your plate and then wander around the back for a sneaky look!!!

I had, for 30+yrs TWO T25 1980's VeeDub Campers, one had a GB sticker and the other, an AUS one with small flag and it was often surprising how people were more inclined to come and talk to me when I was driving the AUS one.
I had to often explain that it was there when I bought it, but because I was born there, (dragged back to UK at 12months) it was allowable

Where does it state the UK has to be Oval ? as majority of Moho's are White you'd be hard pressed to see if its Oval, Sq ect...thought it was only the size of the font that was covered by law same as the Number Plate Font sizes ?

The font size is important as you say, not sure about it having to be oval though but as they usually are, and those for other countries are too, I assume there is some 'agreement' somewhere that states this ...

Ah ... just found this info:

Ah ... just found this info:

The agreement is the Vienna Convention of Road Traffic 1968 which set the oval size as 18cm x 13.3 cm approx 7 x 5 inches in old money

1968 you say...

Yep and still in force today

It also set your licence categories (A B C C1 etc), road signs (size, shape, colour etc), road markings, traffic light signaling order and a lot more, which is why Europe road laws are basically all the same and the USA and most of Asia are totally different

I found it interesting as an observer at Portsmouth terminal to note the take up in the display of UK plates on vehicles bound for Spain.
What it told me was that amongst UK citizens, there is a healthy respect, even possibly fear of those charged with upholding law and order in Spain.
After all, the requirement for that new sticker has only been enshrined for two months.
After watching 'Police Intercepters' on TV here, I only wish the same respect was given to our law enforcers.

I THINK the police in this country would get more 'respect' IF they were allowed to enforce the law, the same as the Spanish, and not be hampered by laws that protect the criminal, sometimes, more than the victim.
It amazes and annoys me, when I accidently see the programme you mention (I try to avoid such programmes as I THINK it glorifies some people that will do ANYTHING to get the faces shown on TV), that after a high speed chase that endangers the lives of, not only the police but the general public, the offender gets off with having his licence taken away (what difference will that make to someone with that attitude, they'll just carry on driving) or a suspended sentence or caution??? :madder:

It hardly encourages the police to put their lives, and that of their families, in danger when the punishment is so petty. I KNOW I wouldn't!

I have been in Spain for the last month on arriving back at villasol morning a man at reception said you need to change your number plates as there is a new law stating that uk vehicles can no longer have the right logo on there plate and if the police stop you it’s a 60 euro fine I’ve not been stop and have not heard of it until now has anyone else heard of it and is it true?
Sadly it is true.
Johnson introduced it in September

You can buy a UK sticker to cover the eu stars bit of the plate, and also put a UK sticker on the van to keep them happy.
If your plate is before the change date then don’t worry about covering anything up just apply the U.K. sticker

The government website does not say you have to change your plates but you MUST display a U.K. sticker

Driving outside the UK

If your number plate includes the UK identifier with the Union flag (also known as the Union Jack), you do not need a UK sticker.

However, you will need to display a UK sticker clearly on the rear of your vehicle if your number plate has any of the following:

  • a GB identifier with the Union flag
  • a Euro symbol
  • a national flag of England, Scotland or Wales
  • numbers and letters only - no flag or identifier
If you’re in Spain, Cyprus or Malta, you must display a UK sticker no matter what is on your number plate.

If you have a GB sticker, cover or remove it before driving outside the UK.

I may be missing something but I can't fathom out why there are 76 posts and all the hand-wringing.
I've just bought online a complete set to apply to the m/h body and both number plates for a fiver, delivered.
The U.K. sticker fits exactly over my old GB sticker.

The term ‘Great Britain’ refers to England, Scotland and Wales. While the term ‘United Kingdom’, in fact, refers to the area governed by Her Majesty The Queen, including Northern Ireland.

If the area changes, for example by losing Northern Ireland or Scotland, or even Wales, then no change to the sticker will be necessary. I'm sure that gives the people of Northern Ireland renewed confidence in the promises of the government.
Not sure your right there....should NI leave the 'Union' then we lose the UK and become just GB. If Scotland leave then we stay with UK but lose the GB. If both go then we become England and Wales.

The Soviet Union became the Former Soviet Union (FSU). Will the UK become the Former United Kingdom?:giggle:

So, why not cover all eventualities and just have ENG for English reg. vehicle, SCO for Scottish etc :giggle:

It would then be a legal requirement. So anyone who went from England into Wales or Scotland could be fined for not having an ENG sticker. And vice versa. So yes, a great idea.

Never thought of that but it would certainly put a new slant on 'Staycations' AND help the treasuries coffers!

I am one of the lucky ones, I just have the Welsh flag on mine! Yes, I do know that I should display a U.K. sticker too!

Very proud to say that I am not UK or GB but Cymro
will have this on my Motorhome and nothing but nothing else!

That is what we did too. Got the white UK sticker as we were going to Spain. Back now, no issues anywhere relating to numberplate or stickers. 👍

But she is in a way correct. You are not allowed to travel in over once per month without being subjected to searches to ensure you have no 'duty free allowances'

Must be a lot of checking of the Spanish nationals that go into Gibraltar every day then.

Or has that stopped now 😊

Why would we lose UK? It would just mean the United Kingdom of Wales, Scotland and England, or just England and Wales.

Only England and Scotland are kingdoms. If one of them were to leave. The UK ie united kindom would be no more. 😷
But its the United Kingdom ... not Kingdoms ...
