Nordic travel plans August / September 2017

Out of interest I looked up the motorhome parking for the event. 500 NOK per night and you have to book the whole package!!!

Will be giving that one a very wide berth.

Wow, just for the record so will we, although we do not intend to do Bergen this trip :)(y)

will take care not to get lost

At least that narrows it down to a few hundreds miles (y)

sounds like a nice plan though, I reckon we need to be allowing 6 days for the drive home at a decent pace, so must be out of Lofoten by 18th September, at the other end on similar logic will be allowing 6 days to get to Trollstigen, from where our Norway will really start for us this time, leaving the southern end for next time

So somewhere between 1st - 18th September, we will be heading north towards Lofoten (y), although I hope to be on the Lofoten isles for a good few days

I am going to sneakily over order the currency we take, then use the excess we get home with to justify a return trip next year :):)

If you are to Trollstigen, then as a suggestion think about a little detour to the Birksdal Glacier.. and another suggestion after the Atlantic road we used this route to by pass Trondheim. Very scenic with plenty of places to pull over and the only vehicles we seemed to pass were other MHs or the occasional tractor.

The route I'm suggesting is the 192 kms via Brekstad..

http://www.aurora-service.eu/

just found this while bumbling around in google, will be permanently open on our travels (y)(y)

not sure if the aurora is your thing Judith @jumartoo

It's on my bucket list (if I had one!!!)

Bookmarked it, thanks.

We're now part way up the Höga Kusten in Sweden parked at a small ferry port (passenger ferry to the many small islands, we think), €3 for the night. We were going to go to the north access car park to the Skuleskogens National Park to go walking tomorrow but Martin didn't fancy a gravel road up there if the weather is bad tomorrow. Good weather, we're in!!!

Langdal, visited in 2008, hope its still going....

A brilliant minimum facility site just off the hwy63 about 8kms south of the famous Trollstigen pass. Look out for a motorhome signpost and handwritten sign for 'stellplaetz' just after a cattle grid and follow gravel track down to the site. Theres no place to empty your waste here, just a spring water tap, rubbish bins and a compost toilet but it is in a fantastic location down a rough track next to the rapids that have come down from the trolstigen pass. Set in a beautiful forest with Individual glades for each motorhome. Bargain price of 50kr a night (about £5 in 08) Owner calls in the evening for the fee. Highly recommended.

Coords are for the turn down the track off the main road... 62.36425 7.56007

Just when I had everything under control o_Oo_O

decided to book our Eurotunnel crossing tonight, possibly a little late, but covering bases and not bothered about peak time travel. We need to be at home on Friday 18th to let in new guests to our holiday let, then we are off. We can get someone else to meet them but a Friday leave works for us.

So decided to book midnight on the 18th or early hours of 19th, (y)(y)

:(

never dreamt they wouldn't have any crossing going overnight o_O and everything close to them fully booked

Looking now at taking the 18:36 option on the Saturday to save a few £'s but will probably opt for the 16:00 window

That's already lost us a whole days driving, just as I worked out 5 days from home to Norway was doable in four days I find I need 5 o_O the 5 day window is to fulfil the dog passport time limits, just to be sure we have no issues crossing into Norway

but just look how cheap it is coming back, no wonder we normally travel out of season

LPG in Norway, I have seen there seems to be plenty of it, but will I need an adaptor?

I will have 2 x 11kg full as we leave UK, but as Bev keeps reminding me it will be cold like to cover all bases, other option is to carry an extra cylinder my pig tail connector has same thread as Calor (y), we already have a spare Calor cylinder at home :)

edit - cancel the request, look what I found that will be a useful resource

https://www.mylpg.eu/stations/norway/

I will not run out now I know where to find it :LOL:

We found lpg was not widely available in Norway
Plus the map of stations is not totally reliable
I'd suggest filling before your run out, just to be in the safe side

Hi David, just has been said the myLPG.eu site is a useful guide but not always accurate. We have filled up in Norway and Sweden. They use the dish type of connection. Also we found that lpg stations have not been anywhere near a petrol forecourt as in the UK. They can be on industrial estates or one was like a compound from mad max. Some are self service. Enjoy your trip.

Just been reading back through @Robert Clark 's thread about his travels to Norway in 2015, found myself liking posts I had missed back then, apologies Robert for the random alerts, even Judgemental RIP got a renewed thanks :)(y)

Bud looks like our first Norwegian coastal stop, camp site on waters edge, with washing machine, this is now becoming Bevs biggest concern, never been away for 40 nights, going to M + S in Shrewsbury underwear shopping this weekend to cover some of the risk o_O

I have duplicated this post on @jumartoo 's current travel thread, apologies to anybody I confuse, seemed a useful lead back in to this thread

Planning in real earnest now, seems suddenly to be very real, maybe because Bev took Mum to the BUPA village today :)(y)

We plan to be on Lofoten for a few nights and to make it a holiday for Bev, some of those will be consecutive nights in same place

this is looking a favourite

I am always wary of photos on owner websites, but if all these are on the site or very near, it looks too good to drive past (y):)

I remember this site, we didn't stop at it.. If you look on google street view it is just a piece of land between the main road and sea with a hill directly across the road. Didn't appeal to us.

We used a similar site but away from the road next to a beach here..https://www.campercontact.com/en/no...motorhome-parking-rystad-lofoten-camping.aspx It even has a washing machine and dryer...

I don't remember seeing any big commercial campsites anywhere on Lofoten or Norway to be fair.. Very few with a restaurant etc. but the facilities were normally very good, good internet but you paid extra to use the shower. Full kitchens were often available FOC... 25-30€ a night...

Many thanks @moulin 87 a lot of it will be turn up and look before going in, we have no expectations of large anything, we are used to the western isles, but a few mod cons, washer drier, someone else wifi, bit of electrickery for a change, all keep things sweet indoors :)

The sites we saw looked to be there mainly for the situation directly on the ffjord shore and some were in lovely locations. Because we didn't use them I can't comment on the facilities.

How are you intending to get onto the Lofotens?

Thanks for that, we will be driving north from Trondheim, I would imagine more or less on the route you are about take south, so we will either use the ferry you just have or drive right round, it will be our last bit of coastal driving as we then head back home via Sweden, on the road you came in on, progress check on the roadworks :)(y)

Our dates will be roughly arrive on Norwegian coast camp at Bud (possibly) campercontact 13537, 28th August, then head north from there to Lofoten which we must leave by 16th Sept, all still very rushed considering it will be a 39 night trip o_O

seriously close now, just deciding whether to start anew thread with the real travel rather than the planning, but think I will just continue on from here :)

had some great news yesterday, we have a couple of relations who have travelled the world with work and pleasure but frequently comment on liking what we are up to, told them about Norway a few months ago to a few ooh's and aah's, well they came over for the night last night, a meal not too much drink (midweek) and they knew our rule and happily abstained, although we would have broken the rule for the exception of their visit, not unlike Thursday last in Shrewsbury

anyway, I digress as so often :)(y), they are flying out to join us for the Lofoten Isles, either with us or they might hire their own MH (y), really looking forward to sharing the experience with them :)(y)

Roger is ex bomb disposal and now safely and happily retired from the army, I guess as part of the job he needed to be, but we know nobody as laid back about things as him, they are a great couple. I will refer to them as A + R from here on, Annie and Roger, to be included by photograph when in Norway (y)

we set off either Friday night for a poddle down via eldest daughter with youngest grandson whose first birthday we will miss o_O, but so much better to be around for the next few when he really knows us and has proper pressies :):)

Saturday 16:00 crossing, followed by a few miles only in general direction of Denmark :):)

Four days should get us into Norway, six days up to our start of the Norwegian coast travels day 14 on to Lofoten if not before, day 25 set off for home :(:( 10 days to get home, nearly 2500 miles 6000 round trip

will try and keep a full log of all we do, fuel, toll, gas, sites, food costs etc etc :)(y)

(If we find our paths may cross we can have a mini meet.)

I hope that if we actually do get close enough for a wave we will at the very least be able to stop for a chat (y), but unless you now drive very slowly or camp up somewhere it is not looking likely o_O

Top of the trolls ladder might be the closest cross over point, 25th or 26th Aug :):)

or the Bud camp site the day after

and if you do avoid us at both of those, we will track you down at Totana :):)(y)(y), not sure the extra gin will make it down there though, especially now we have A + R joining in :)

Have a wonderful trip David and I look forward to living it vicariously. I've watched a few Scandi noir dramas and so am fluent in all languages.... happy to help out.

I spent the weekend recently with a Swedish vegan...they are quite reserved as a race and have almost no sense of humour but that could just have been her...

Lykke til (good luck in Norwegian)

@Mousy hello Dawn, lovely to see you posting, I either miss your comments or you have been absent

We'll be following your trip with interest and a tinge of jealousy :) Safe travels.

Thank you,

I've been awol with family stuff. I'll try and follow your trip though x

We're halfway along the Atlantic Highway and are staying here tonight. We need to slow down because we don't want to be in Bergen until September and preferably after the first week. I'm sure we'll find enough to do. I'll monitor your route and we'll see what happens!

I can hardly believe today has arrived, it seems no time ago we had weeks to go even last week we still had days, now we have a few minutes to get finished off

I reckon I must have taken out 200kg or more of awning and associated unneeded stuff just from the garage., then replaced it with 400kg of essential food and drink :):):)(y)(y) seven weeks 7 bottles of gin, 40 bottles of tonic, a few beers and a bottle of something for Bev :LOL:

I am sure when we get there the fear of high prices will diminish at least a bit, but one thing is it will be what it is, got some cash, got some cards, got 5 and a bit weeks till we get back, I am as giddy as I have ever been for a trip away

Filled with water having forgotten for Shrewsbury, will refill gas in UK I have no idea whether we are first or second bottle but seem to think we haven't refilled since on the way to Chester at Easter, been off grid a good few nights since then but don't even recall changing bottles over (y)

Will log all the costs, but have decided to start from the chunnel so others can maybe compare their own routes to ours, we will leave the UK brim full of gas and diesel, but at our typical 20mpg and 1700 miles till we get to Bud on the Norway coast for our first site stop, we are going to be seeing a few fuel stations :(

vets at 6 for the same checks we have returning to UK, we found we need that to get in Norway and possibly Sweden, we will have 5 days to get to the Norwegian border, but that closer than it sounds :) speak soon :)(y)

just remembered all my clothes are still on my bed upstairs, must dash

Don't forget to pack Lola
