No overnighting, what do you do ?

The other side of the coin (and my own argument) is that there's plenty of moans if councils don't provide such facilities ...

I used to think PBoro had got it about right, plenty of parking provision, good access... but presumably to offset cuts in central income, parking charges have gone up & up... inconsiderate & obstructing on road parking increased, resulting in lower footfall in the city... empty shops... lower council income, increased parking fees etc etc.
The car park costs should be incorporated in the rates of the business.

That's why pubs will offer free stop over because they then get the custom in the pub.

Businesses in town centres want the customers so free carparks would encorouge that.

So in the particular case gjh quoted above...caravans will use the cl and use the car to visit surrounding area , quite possibly even those pubs.

The motorhome doesn't need to

As I said "allegedly", The main complainant, was a "known associate" of a Local Camp site owner. Somewhere, on one (or more) of the Forums, some years ago was a lengthy discourse, on said subject.

As for what "councils do". We all know that councils are run by career bureaucrats, who`s only thoughts are to keep the overinflated "local gravy train" running for their benefit and the eventual inflated pensions. Heaven forbid, that some "comercial, common sense thinking" should invade their hallowed halls!.

Perhaps he got his business plan wrong... sounds like heavy investment before he knew the MH trade was there... lots on here won't go on "sites"...

Plenty of laws still on our statute books which are effectively obsolete... perhaps this 60 year old law should be one of them?

Should councils really intervene in competition matters (yes, I know they do, but should they?)
He certainly got his business plan wrong in not expecting somebody to start up in competition illegally :-)

Councils do prosecute such matters but (as previously mentioned) in a restricted way - it tends to be the likes of illegal tobacco and alcohol sales.

It's sad, but unsurprising, that no government has noticed the increase in MH'ing and created a national policy to encourage this leisure activity...
...like create an exemption from the 1960 Act to allow appropriate businesses with car parks to have one or two MH spaces...
As mentioned several times in previous threads, although the Caravan Sites and Control of Development Act was originally passed in 1960 it has been examined and updated several times by parliament in the intervening years. It is not, therefore, obsolete as far as parliament is concerned.
There is nothing to stop anyone writing to Natural England or Defra to make such a suggestion though.

I think the Government have more to worry about than a few thousand of the richest people in the country having somewhere free or cheap to park their £70k outfit :D

Sadly, Jim, I would suspect you are right!. Hopefully they also have more to think about than placing further unnecessary restrictions on "When and Where"?.

BTW. In terms of insurance liability, the vast majority of places, including Pub Car Parks, and other parking facilities, have Disclaimer Notices posted. To try and limit their liability to all but the most gross and blatant abuse. The "small print" in many P-L policies exclude all sorts of "stuff" that make a lot of them nearly worthless!!. Many "legal cover" policies too have so many "get out`s", one often wonder`s if they are worth the time?.

Parking on a piece of land is completely different from theft

In Scotland the definition of theft is the deprivation of the use of an asset (well that's what I understand), so parking on private land would deprive the owner the use of that piece of land and therefore be theft.

If there are signs asking that one does not park / camp / cook etc I would respect those signs, legal or not. Why make problems for yourself and others?

There is almost always somewhere else to park up - even if it is at the back end of an industrial estate.

You have to watch that too. There have been TRUCKS clamped for "overnighting" in several places, One I know of. is Just by the Stonebridge interchange (Tollbar End) on the A45/46 junction, (near Coventry Airport) there are signs up (or where in `06) banning all waiting!.

If there were signs I wouldn't park there :) Near airports will always be an issue of course.

The CL / CS system is good but there are huge areas of the country that are not covered - and some of the locations / sites leave a lot to be desired....... one place we stayed (only one night!) had the CDP in a corner of a field which would have been fine but the field was also occupied by cattle. The advertised shower / loo was in a corner of the barn (no modesty screens!!!) We have also found some wonderful mini sites.
