I have just made it through the Pyrenees and just when I started to think about our final destination (Southern Spain) the wipers stopped working, which is too good when you have to drive through continuous heavy rain. Anyway I contacted the AA breakdown service as instructed by the Nationwide help line.
The chap from the AA said that my vehicle is not covered as it is greater than 3,500kg, which it is. 4,005 to be precise. The Nationwide breakdown policy clearly states that motorhomes up to 7,500kg are covered.
Am I making a mistake?

Refer them to the N/w website.

No your fine, AA staff just not up to speed. Ring then again and read them out the T&Cs of your cover. I saw mention of this before which was resolved
Thanks for the clarification 👍

As stated, that limit is the AA car cover limit , not the Nationwide!

Did they sort the issue out as week, that’s the critical thing.
Not at all. I got to a garage under my own steam and they were amazing. The wipers were fixed be the following day. Needed a new motor. Also found myself a reasonable hotel so that I could leave the van with the garage.

I had the same reply from Nationwide last year when I picked up 2 punctures at the same time on our 4200Kg motorhome ... fortunately they checked there and then and agreed we were in fact covered.

That’s not good. Ok you got compensation but they did still abandon you even though covered.

Yes I was effectively abandoned. However the van was still technically sound and in running order. I just had to find somewhere safe for the night, then take the risk of driving to a garage without working wipers the following day. Fortunately I got to the garage without incident.
Don't like to think of the sort of trouble I could have been in if luck hadn't been on my side.

Does the breakdown cover cover left hand drive motorhomes do you know?

Here is a link to the policy. Can't find any mention of the hand of the vehicle. Just that it meets the weight and size criteria. 7500kg max, 8m max length including racks or boxes and 2.55m wide.

Final update:
The AA have upheld my claim and awarded me my emergency accommodation costs in full, so no reduction for what my accommodation costs would have been without breaking down. I have also been awarded £50 compensation for them not responding in the first instance, so all in all, a reasonable outcome.
PS Emergency accommodation was two nights in an ibis Styles hotel @ £160.

The AA Said the save to me. I advised them otherwise and they sent a mechanic. A very good one at that.

I was thinking about this the other day. Their first thought nowadays is recovery. I get the feeling very few of the operators are actual mechanics and all they can do is recover.

Really was an old school mechanic

Called out the AA via the App (brilliant as sends location and you can register you Nationwide account on it in preparation for the worst), my 3850kg Arto flagged in their system and an opporator called, they checked the policy details (they operate a number of schemes for different organisations who all have different T&C) and agreed that the Nationwide policy covered the vehicle - once the mechanic arrived they were excellent.

Yep I had similar to this when I broke down in Italy. I phoned the number I was supplied with by nationwide. The girl was In France I believe , she took my details then said I wasn't covered under the nationwide breakdown, i insisted I was , she then said its OK though as I can cover you through your safeguard cover. My camper is 25 years old so it's outside safeguards t&c but it's 4250kg 7metres long so it's definitely covered by nationwide. I asked her to recheck her information which she did reluctantly and then she said oh yes sorry my mistake.

So I think it's quite common that the breakdown services aren't fully clued up .
Did make me panic a bit at the time as I was in the middle of nowhere with a flat battery.

However in the end I got it started and cancelled the call out , made my own way to a garage.

Long time since I read the T&C's but if I remember correctly, it covers the person with the Bank Account, not the vehicle (as long as the vehicle is within limits). 🤔
Correct, so all vehicles covered under 7.5 tons. When we had a front tyre blowout on the M11 they were excellent. We had to wait a bit longer so they could locate a larger pickup vehicle.

This is, so annoying! I had exactly the same thing Iin UK a year or so back. Chap was adamant it wasn't covered. Took a real barney to persuade him. Made a complaint, someone from AA called to schmooze me, terribly sorry, isolated incident, will review training etc etc. Perhaps we should collate these instances and make a collective complaint to Nationwide, rather than AA?

Wasn't it only last year that the Nationwide moved their breakdown services to the AA?

Perhaps they could be forgiven in the early days, but certainly not now!

To be honest I've had similar with Green Flag said I wasn't covered I insisted I was they wouldn't recover me phoned a friend he recovered me when at home retrieved the documents phoned Green Flag they paid the inflated recovery price plus £50 and were very apologetic I've been with them for 30+ years it was the only problem I've had with them.
