I have just made it through the Pyrenees and just when I started to think about our final destination (Southern Spain) the wipers stopped working, which is too good when you have to drive through continuous heavy rain. Anyway I contacted the AA breakdown service as instructed by the Nationwide help line.
The chap from the AA said that my vehicle is not covered as it is greater than 3,500kg, which it is. 4,005 to be precise. The Nationwide breakdown policy clearly states that motorhomes up to 7,500kg are covered.
Am I making a mistake?

Reading through the T&C's - it says you have to inform them if you're on any prescribed medication

This has always been the case with their Travel Insurance, which includes the breakdown cover.

I 'declared' that I take blood thinning tablets, but there was no extra cost.

As stated, that limit is the AA car cover limit , not the Nationwide!
I got told I was over the 3500kg limit when I had an EGR fault recovery. I was told by the driver, having waited ALL night for him " I can refuse to take you, but I will as you are only just over".
When I checked with the AA it was covered up to 12000kgs and 12mts in length.

Yes I was effectively abandoned. However the van was still technically sound and in running order. I just had to find somewhere safe for the night, then take the risk of driving to a garage without working wipers the following day. Fortunately I got to the garage without incident.
Don't like to think of the sort of trouble I could have been in if luck hadn't been on my side.
Sometimes it works out better that way, our merc based Hymer dash board went sour so couldn’t see the speedo, etc. we refused to drive it 20 miles to the merc commercial garage in France. Result 24 hours to fix a 2 hour job, next time I’ll it myself if it moves!

I ALWAYS carry, hidden away, in my van, a copy of all insurances for just such a situation.
I even have a letter from the CEO of the Caravan Club (C&MH) stating that I can park in either direction as long as it is within the pitch! 😄

Which app is that (please!).
Hi, apologies, should have been more specific - the standard AA app, download it and enter a few details and then when you report a breakdown through it, the app automatically locates you and you receive upadates on progress/arrival time. The AA app also shows local fuel prices, again handy if you are in an unfamiliar area.

Just to be clear, if you have the N/W flex account and break down do you call N/W or AA ?

Thanks for the advice. I have added the AA app and added my details including Nationwide banking details. Looks user friendly, especially if you need to contact them as a result of an accident or breakdown

There are breakdown contact numbers on the Nationwide insurance documents.

I am just about to take delivery of my new Frankia Platin, 8.4m long, we are taking her across to France for 2 weeks in June (our first trip to Europe), can anyone recommend breakdown cover given the AA limit is 8.0m?
I will be posting nearer the time for useful tips and hints regarding stuff to take on the trip
Best regards
Alderney Bob

I think Nationwide is the exception rather than the rule, so much so that in many cases the AA operatives do not even know about the 7500kg 8m Limit. The limit is more to do with the ability to recovery you as recovery vehicles able to carry an 8m plus MH are in short supply. May be have a look here.

That's one hell of a statement, I would imagine the cost of insurance with them, to reflect such a high promise? 🤔
30+yrs ago, it cost me £600 to transfer one of my broken down Coaches 50miles back to the workshop.

Sorry not sure I get what you mean. The breakdown insurance with Natiowide is included in their flex account package at £13 per month. Includes world wide travel insurance, AA breakdown up to 7500kg and 8m motorhome and mobile phone insurance.

Screenshot from the Nationwide Policy. 8m length limit is in the small print and does include and racks or carriers.

The link you put for Caravanguard stated that 'NOTHING was too long, too wide or too high'

Ah sorry yes, indeed I though the same. Apologise, thought you were referring to the Nationwide policy. I agree that about as open statement you can get in terms of recovery. Here is a new link as the one I posted seemed to be out of date, but still says the same thing. No limits.

Hello,
I just rang Comfort, that is who I am with for insurance, and recovery.
Lovely young lady just told me "there is NO limit on you recovery regarding size or weight in the UK, or Europe".
As I said previously, the AA man that came to me said there was a 3500kg limit, but when I challenged that with Comfort The AA paid me £150 compo for the horrendous service they supplied.

From the Nationwide FlexPlus website:
You can report a breakdown and track your Patrol right to your side using the free AA app, the AA website or by phone.

Yes, download the AA app to your phone and add your Nationwide Flex Plus breakdown cover to the App. Still covers you as driver or passenger in any vehicle that meets the criteria.

It seems that the AA app only applies to the UK.

The AA app with Nationwide flex account covers as others have said (has been a subject of other threads when NW changed to AA and checked by several folks me included that the cover was as per NW+ account T&Cs)

Essentially breakdown/recovery UK/EU max 8m and 7500kg, Worldwide travel (health screen and 70+top up) Phone insurance.

Using the app have registered the bank account and input 3 vehicles with no comment about more than 1. The app also has the benefit of being able to search map locations for fuel prices so can decide when to fill up etc.

Aah nearly forgot if you have a joint account then both account holders have the same benefits.

Not selling NW but at least they aren't closing branches.
