My Worst Fear - We've Broken Down :(

UPDATE: We called Allianz breakdown. Very helpful and spoke greatEnglish! :) They would've come tonight but we said we wanted to stay with our MoHo, so they're coming tomorrow at 8am to take us straight to a garage. They said if they came tonight, we'd be taken to a compound but we wouldn't be able to stay in the MoHo. So, a FREE stopover at the peage!! Hahahahaha

Could be anything, might even be debris that has punctured the tank.

The good thing is, it’s all fixable and fairly easily in most cases.

I worry about breaking down too, but then I rationale that we are always on holiday when we use it, so a holiday will inevitably be inconvenienced.

Hope it’s sorted quick and you can carry on enjoying your hols.

Definitely not debris. There was nothing in the road. All the fuel is coming from the front, under the engine, although it has been running backwards and dropping everywhere. Once the engine was off and the pressure gone, it stopped dripping.

Yeah, you're right, and I'm feeling a little more chilled. Had some coffee and a cheese, ham and mayo sandwich. Our dog has had a walk and is crashed out and the traffic at the peage is very minimal. Pics to follow!!! :) xx

I would bet £100 that’s the fuel filter.

Fingers crossed as they are available everywhere and really simple to change.

Looking into the bonnet the fuel filter is on the top right hand side of the bulkhead.

This was my worst nightmare and has ruined our chance of trying one last time to get on with MoHo-ing :( I'm distraught. I'm sorry to vent to you guys but I can't scream at hubby, as he needs to stay calm to sort this out xx
You need to go into the back of the motorhome and put the kettle on!
This is not your “worst nightmare”. It’s a minor inconvenience that may cost you a few Euros and a couple of hours of your holiday. But it’s given you an opportunity to share your experience with “friends” on Motorhome Fun and probably others who you’ll meet when you continue on your holiday.
It hasn’t ”ruined” your chances of getting on with motorhoming - unless you want it to? Maybe you are looking for an excuse to stop motorhoming.
And you shouldn’t ”scream” at your husband. It’s not his fault the motorhome has broken down and screaming won’t help the situation one bit.
Have a dunky biscuit with your cuppa and soak it up!
😌

Sounds like Maude….I have to admit I panicked when it happened to us but Maude broke out the baguettes and emptied the fridge into them so we had had a feast as she got me to see the funny side (still not sure what that side was:LOL:) and as she pointed out…we were both fine and dandy, we had food and a recovery truck on the way.

You’ll be fixed up in the morning and on your way with a few newer bits under your bonnet.

I get people being upset though, I had a leak from somewhere in the bathroom, grey water. Couldn’t find it for months.

Sometimes leaked sometimes didn’t. I was right grumpy knob about it.

Found the leak while we were away visiting, saw I could easily fix it and did it the second we got home. Very happy I was! 😀

HKF From all I have read, and personal experience of this model engine, I can almost guarantee it will be the fuel filter either coming off or badly leaking. Notorious problem after replacing the inner filter and I’ve experienced it myself. You feel very vulnerable but as others have said easily fixed.

my last change I bought an original full filter and housing and had that changed rather than Re tighten the housing

Cause it's his fault, everything his fault, always will be ...!!!🤣🤣🤣 Well it is in my house!!

So, first of all, thank you SO much all of you for your lovely comments, reassurance and good wishes. We're all settled now, waiting for the recovery truck in the morning. It really does sound like the fuel filter, as the leak does seem to be coming from the back of the right hand side of the engine bay as you look at it from the front of the vehicle.

Here are some pics of our free stopover at the peage!!!:cool:

Make sure you are properly locked and secure tonight.

Sleep well.
Same happened to me a few days after dealer had changed faulty gearbox in my new mini. They must have knocked the fuel pipe. It was quick to sort but I had to be transported from the duel carriageway.
It will be a memory to look back on in the future.

Thank you. I'm very aware of the potential trouble. Hubby says we're fine. However, I've read the horror stories and he hasn't!! We have everything locked and we're not alone here (we have a lorry right next to us). Not that it makes much difference. I won't sleep well :(

Sleep tight and just think, it’ll be sorted tomorrow and then just a distant memory.

I am sorry for this hassle - and I hope that breakdown/recovery or your normal insurance will help sort it out. The day that a mechanical appliance never fails is the day there'll be two moons in the sky! I sincerely hope that the problem is relatively minor as described and make sure you ask the garage for a description about how the fault they track down could have occurred - it might help inform you of any cut corners in the previous servicing work.

I've realised that I have no jack with my van and I'm going online now to order a bottle jack for it because I'm looking at the tyres and not feeling good about them... At least I'll be in with a fighting chance of fixing when the inevitable happens!

Well, I don't think we could've picked a noisier place to break down!! At first it seemed rather quiet, with just the odd lorry going by. Come 1am, it was like a free for all with truck after truck going by and others pulling in, making a racket and pulling off again. One truck even had a rather noisy Deliveroo delivery!! Then, at around 2am, it sounded like another truck pulled in but failed to turn his engine off. Said engine has been running all night and still is....at 6am!!! I have yet to venture out of bed to see what it is, as hubby is still asleep and I don't want to disturb him. Roll on 8am when the recovery truck should arrive!!! :pray2:

I had a suspicion that you would not sleep well when I saw the photo with the trucks parked around you.
The ones that are refrigerated keep running non-stop.
We once made the mistake of overnighting in a truck stop in Romania and vowed "never again".
Also, be careful when you get out of the motorhome. You never know where the drivers have been to the toilet.

We imagined it would be fairly quiet, as there are only actually 3 lorry bays but lots of car bays. However, the lorries just park sideways over lots of car spaces!! LOL Oh, and our 'next door neighbour' has just fired up, too!! What a night!! LOL

Good luck, I sincerely hope you're in your way soon.

Just caught up with your post, lots have had the fuel filter problem, we were lucky and managed to limp into a fiat garage, took about 20 minutes and aboutv€120 from memory. Its a very easy fix so if thats what it is then don't let them persuade you to get it recovered home, insist on a repair and get on with your trip. You'll probably laugh about it in a day or two when you re sat in the sun with a beer.

Hi , morning HKF , we had a similar breakdown a few years ago , just pulled into an Aire , neighbour walked over and said you got a leak . Phoned RAC , this was on sat pm she said we could go to a hotel for weekend with our dog or stay put as garage wouldn't work on it till Monday , so we stayed put , 9 am as promised truck , came put us up on back of truck 29 mins to garage , one hour there sorted oil filter housing had worked loose , funny part of it was garage driver didn't speak English or any of garage staff and we only speak the odd word .all sorted with polite hand gestures , paid the bill which the garage at home ,refunded on our return plus free service next time.
Hope you will soon be on your way .
Terry

At least you made it to France - I didn’t last year!! Or rather I did but only because my sister lent me her MH!

Hubby had a look at the filter this morning and it is loose and covered in diesel. I'm really hoping this is the problem and we get it fixed fast :)

We actually live in France. To be honest, I'd rather be in the UK and covered by the AA. We've already experienced the breakdown service in France with a different vehicle and it wasn't fun. Said vehicle is currently in the UK for repair after spending 7 MONTHS in the garage in France before they finally admitted they couldn't fix it!! This is why breaking down is my worst fear now :(
