Mousy mooches around Greece..

Ha ha, we’ve been found! We are thoroughly enjoying ourselves on the jetty opposite Limeni bay.

We’ve had a fabulous week with martins sister and her husband who stayed nearby. With a visit to spectacular caves at Diros, well worth the €8 entrance fee. 1.2km being punted around in a small boat by a grunting Greek man, what’s not to like?!

It was really lovely meeting John and Di today (Carole and Eddies cousin) and cliffandger you were in Benidorm together.
Wish we’d not just been snorkelling before that photo though!
Only our second British van in 5 weeks and funsters!
Hopefully our paths will cross again soon ...

We’ve been using the scooter to explore and it’s really opened up this Mani peninsula..

With trips to the market, fruit and veg van man, a couple of meals out and ouzo every night, snorkelling with turtles, we are living the dream and so so happy...

It was great to meet you both. Martin - is that REALLY the noodle that’s keeping you floating?!?

We are still having a fabulous time here. We really enjoyed the company of John and Di and Robert and Lis. Safe travels all.

We were approached by a guy today whilst sat outside who after rummaging about in his boot, produced olive oil, sea salt and oregano for sale. We’ve already got 30 litres of oil hidden away (thank god for massive payloads) so we’re content to buy salt and herbs for €2.

This had us both absolutely creased up, but we cannot explain why a Greek Orthodox priest with a body board and pool noodle walking off the beach was so funny...just us?!

Martin is continuing with his Greek cake odyssey..lemon today..

Beautiful Diros Beach, the sun is beating down, we are soooo chilled, happy days...

The water must be cold, it's gone blue. Robert's was yellow on his thread. I am sure a local pharmacy will have a soothing cream.

Met up with Di and John in Kalamata yesterday, we keep saying goodbye and then bumping into each other! Had a lovely coffee and a catch up and said goodbye again!

We went for a wander and found the old railway station..

Martin pretended to be the fat controller..

The reason we were in Kalamata was for Millie to get a proper haircut. The constant seed burrs and grass heads, not to mention the heat was taking its tole.

We arrived for our appointment in a very up market groomers...

It’s the first time I’ve ever been offered a book of suggested styles..

Luckily Big Vicky had a small amount of English but it was with some trepidation that we left Mills wondering what on earth we’d come back too..

2 hours later she was very pleased to see us...

We were pleased she didn’t look completely ridiculous but Martin couldn’t get the bow off quickly enough.

€35 later she’s much more comfortable (although looking more poodle than doodle)

We returned to Petalidi last night, plenty of parking, water available from the beach showers and there are now 2 portaloos by the cafe on the beach...although you’d need a strong stomach to use them! (So Martin tells me!).

We parked beach side but were disturbed by a group of kids revering their scooters and loudly enjoying their Saturday night so at midnight we moved off just down the road and they left us alone. Once in bed the noise of our fans drowned them out! Have I mentioned it’s hot?

Mid to high 30’s but with a breeze. For the first time in 5 years motorhoming we sleep we all the windows fully open with mesh screens down.

Millie finds her own way of keeping cool.

Our daughter Libby flys into Kalamata today to join us for a week..so exciting (although her delight in half hour showers may be an issue!).

Well she’s arrived... we went straight out for Greek salad, lamb chops and wine!

We moved back onto Mani and some of our favourite spots..

Limeni Bay and the surrounding waters are just beautiful.

It’s been very hot this week so lots of cooling swims and snorkelling with turtles.

Libby has adapted well to van life, seeing her dad in his pants, “pooing in a hole” and “sleeping roadside” have made this holiday a memorable one for her.
She’s going home refreshed, chilled and brimming with laughter at some of our antics..

She’s also embraced no makeup unInstagramable selfies!

Hi all! Don’t worry we’ve not been kidnapped by the Greeks. We have been on an adventure though.

When we last posted we had dropped our daughter Libby off at Kalamata airport, we then crossed across the top of Mani to the third peninsula.

We spent a night or 2 following the coast down to Neiopoli, the weather was mixed with clouds, high winds and even the odd rain shower, still hot but the glum sky echoed our mood, slightly missing home after Libby’s fun and laughter.

On a whim I went into the ferry office in Neioploi to ask about Kythira island, I had a vague memory of reading something somewhere that said it was beautiful and “very Greek”.

I was hoping for some island info and perhaps a ferry timetable.

20 minutes later I’d spent €102 (one way!) and had 30 minutes to catch the next ferry, my island information had consisted of the ticket man giving me the thumbs up when I mentioned Kythira...and a very one sided conversation manly being grunted at in Greek.

Ferry price is €12.50 per person and €11 per meter of your van length...I think...as at this point I was mildly panicking that I couldn’t remember my pin, was it the right card and was Martin even wanting to go to this still mysterious island?

Money spent and trying to spin this to Martin as “an adventure” we joined the slightly chaotic que on the jetty. Much arm waving and whistle blowing by men in uniform and we reversed onto the lower deck.

An hour and a half later we rolled off to this..

Slightly disconcerting to see 2 shipwrecks as we landed..

With no idea where we should go we turned left and started heading around the coast.

We quickly realised the roads are narrow, twisting and not particularly Moho friendly. We stopped to chill out.

We took the cycles off the back and went off to explore.

30 odd years ago our first ever holiday together was island hopping around Greece. This was like stepping back in time, the same sleepy whitewashed villages with little coves.

Thankfully our (my) impulsive decision to island hop had paid off, we felt we’d arrived in paradise..

A cooling swim and a drink calmed us down and we spent a very quiet night on the beach.

Kapsali although beautiful has very narrow streets..

The only place we could find to park was on the jetty, luckily a fisherman gave us the thumbs up, which was great because we were both so strung out and stressed with the drive down and around the bay that we couldn’t of moved on anyway!

Kapsali is actually 2 bays and we were at the far one. We cycled around to the main beach and a ouzo calmed our nerves.

We decided after our sketchy drive that any further exploration would be by scooter..

If you look closely you can spot us tucked up for the night..

Thank God, we’ve used the scooter, unless you’re uber fit and like hill hiking a lot of this island is inaccessible to motorhomes.

Some of the beaches were tricky to get to by scooter because the last mile or 2 is dirt trail.

We had a whimsical notion of visiting all 30 beaches on the island... after I had to dismount and walk/stagger up the hill in 36 degrees, we visited 2!

Brunch with a nice view was a good reward.

Not remotely Moho friendly!

Very pretty though, with nice shopping opportunities..

Whitewash walls, blue shutters ..so Greek.

We moved up the island to Agia Pelagia, two beaches, a tiny harbour and some little shops and tavernas.

Somedays we had the beach to ourselves, particularly if the sea was rough.

Rough seas also meant a breeze, which was very welcome as the temperature hit high 30’s and 41 one day.

Just in case you need it, Google maps suggests there is only one campsite. A teeny weenie municipal one

After 10 nights on Kythira, we had explored all we wanted and it was time to move on.

After the ferry we drove to Monemvassia, it felt very busy and vibrant after the completely laid back Kythira vibe.

This spit of land, well fortified and full of winding cobbled streets is lovely.

We sat and enjoyed the sea view over the roof tops.
Undoubtedly a tourist hot spot but still worth a visit.

After spending the night parked by the marina we carried on mooching along the coast towards Patras passing lovely stop overs and beaches on the way.

Yes Robert, we sat and watched them for ages. There were 3, I took some lovely videos but they won’t upload.

Our top tip if you visit the Corinth Canal is not to cross over the bridge which submerges and sit at the cafe to watch the boats pass unless you’ve got a couple of hours to spare! Thankfully we had Millie with us.

Greece in August is hot...

Not sure if there was a problem with the rubbish collecting or if this is normal but it was like this for miles...

We were sad to say goodbye to Greece as we’ve really enjoyed our time there but Italy and homewards beckons

Been loving your photos, we spent alot of our holidays in Greece while I was working, and have many happy memories, thanks for sharing it's on our list, almost booked the ferry a couple of times, but other things have cropped up.

Rubbish was a problem the last couple of times we visited Corfu. The locals say the council have no money for waste collections.
