Moselle to Mosel end to end September 2019

If four still count as a mini meet, that is what we have here, arrived at Riel, cliffandger had just arrived but we’re relocating further down the stellplatz where tonka were already parked

We opted to park up near entrance, Brendan already there and I quickly worked out this end was a lot nearer the bars ? and we are more or less riverside

The water really looks that green in sunlight

Probably having 2 nights here, just charged both bikes, paid the man his €8 for the night ?? then promptly spent more than we saved on camping fees at the bar on burgers and beer ?

Today’s journey was all of 60 miles and literally right alongside the Mosel all the way

View attachment 332545

Very pretty drive, best miles of the trip so far by some ? liking the Mosel valley again now ?

Had to stop for fuel

View attachment 332547

That caused a bit of debate ending in an instruction from Bev that I must put in the diesel from the right hand pump. I had wanted to continue with super diesel based on improved mpg so far this trip, but couldn’t work out what was what, I did sniff the left hand pump and confirmed that was petrol, Bev wouldn’t let me sniff the rest so plain diesel we have. Can anybody translate the others ?

A quick bimble round the village we found a Geo cache ? outside the wine museum which we went into hoping more for samples than knowledge , came out with neither , bit like someone’s house but full of stuff ?

Saw these

Then decided it was beer o’clock, then stayed long enough to eat tea while there ??

Back for a rather nice fizzy white that Brendan has discovered, now come in from the relative chill following a sunny day

Bev has discovered a load of geo caches the other side of the river I think that is why we are staying 2 nights ?
We are running on the regular diesel and getting 34 though I will confirm this when we get home.(or I may not bother we are on holiday the mpg is erelivant anyway)
We we're sticking diesel big time on some of the climbs today but just 3.5 toned ish.

We’re wending our way north now after a week or so of the Rhine, Neckar and other rivers, generally feeling they are not a patch on the Mosel. We had a great three weeks there, mostly between Cochem and Bernkastel-Kues, including a week at Reil (7th night free if you pay for 6). Some of you may already have passed Ellenz-Poltersdorf but parking at Weingut Loosen for a few nights takes some beating. Not enormous spaces (and they slope) but you can sit on the owners’ terrace and sample their wine at 4.50€ a bottle every evening. It’s on Campercontact if you have a look. You can cycle to Cochem or catch a little ferry to the pretty town opposite, Beilstein.

Our crossing back is next Tuesday or we’d be tempted to come to join you all. We saw a few funsters along the Mosel but none since. In fact very few Brits at all.

Really shouldn't try to type after wine ?

The reason I say this we visited last October without booking and got the last pitch with a few being turned away afterwards
There’s an even nicer one on the fishing lake 20 mins walk in, you won’t have the huge factory wake you up at six in the morning if it’s a weekday v clean and tidy and peaceful.

Morning

Chilly overnight down to 7C when we got up this morning but sun still behind the hills, soon changed when sun came out

We are moving on today leaving Brendan but taking his knowledge of and to a vineyard stellplatz

Only a few miles more up river, but loved the drive yesterday right alongside the river but like being on our own river cruise ?

Found the suggested vineyard stellplatz but already full, as was the next one up the road

Used camper contact to find this vineyard stellplatz on the outskirts of Trier

A bit longer drive today than scheduled but not much further

A bit more stop start and through towns today so mpg slightly affected or it is the effect of normal diesel the jury is still out on that

Did a supermarket shop, place split in 2 with 2 separate doors, one for drinks and hardwares, other for foods, found a great beer offer, 6 bottles 500ml for €5.49 ? no wheat beer included ?

Bought some sausage to cook like a mini Cumberland ring , will be eating in tonight Trier is too far away, but there is a restaurant on site , but might spend tonight’s ration money on their wine and eat in ?

We wandered down for the tasting tour, to be greeted by what I would have to describe as my expectation of a German man, grumpy or what ?

So we decided to pay our fees and not bother with tasting or buying for that matter , same grumpy Germanic chap said it’s easy and pointed to a sheet of paper written wholly in German telling us to put money in envelope and post in box, easy when you know or if you wrote the sheet maybe, or understand written German ?

Well we are still holding the folding and will invest elsewhere, maybe even holding on to it till France where we will be much sooner at this rate

Glad we did the river this way round ?

A lovely sunset to end a mixed day here

France on Saturday, looks like the weather is coming out to meet us ?? although not been at all bad for mid September so far

Unfortunately this was our experience too...?

What no wheat beer, that's all I drink in Germany apart from Gin. :D

Great photos David, Germany is wonderful for motorhoming. Shame you are not enjoying it that much, I think you are doing Germany a disservice, remember if they had wine or beer tasting in England you may still get a grumpy bleeder or 2 arranging it and all the writing would be in English, you are in another country.

I've just met a couple of grumpy sods in Durham.

Last year in Germany Aldi with the pfande(refund) a large bottle of beer was costing us 14 cents, so about 12\13 pence in UK money, we have seen the same bottles over here at nearly 2 quid. That plus kostenlos stellplatze is a win win, whichever country you are in their is good and bad, expensive sites, good etc and cheaper ones.

That's the advantage of a van with a large garage, you can certainly get some cheap beer in, trouble is by the time we got back to the ferry we had nearly supped the lot, well it was hot weather but I still blame Caroline.

Only problem with the cheap beer the deposite on the can/bottle doubles the price.
I'm practicly crying at the moment thowing the German cans and bottles in the recycling bins in France.
?

There was a recycle return arrangement at this super market, the price of the beer I bought didn’t mention any extra charges, as I have still paid less than UK prices I am OK with recycling the bottles ?

I really do not like the wheat beer flavour, tastes like added chemical to me, but we are all different some like different things ?

You should have reminded your grumpy German friend, that we won the war ?

All plastic bottles and cans have a 25cent charge on them, you can only take them back to a stores that sells the same one. The machine reads the barcode.
Look at your receipt you will see the charge.

We have only driven 46 miles today in total, through three countries, including rather aptly Schengen ?

Bev had a desire to find a geo cache in Luxembourg, having found at least one in every country we have been to

I managed to drive past a couple where there was no obvious parking, then found one almost at the last option in the country. Found it nice and easily then checked where we were , turned out to be a nature reserve, formed old sand and gravel workings alongside the Mosel about 3 miles north of Schengen

Had a lovely walk round, saw a fox sunbathing and a good few birds although all same as we would find at home in similar locations

Still plenty of vineyards, but got us thinking we have never heard of Luxembourg wines, maybe they don’t make enough to share ?

Then went to Camper Contact for tonight’s stop, we were heading for one north of Metz but slightly off the Mosel, then Bev spotted camping municipal Thionville , what a gem we have found, office closed till 4 but look to be plenty of spaces, we have rung to confirm they have room and are now in a huddle of 5 other Motorhomes all waiting for 4 with only a couple of riverside places left ?

Close to town, riverside promenade outside the campsite and looks to be just under €20 / night

Will report back after 4 ?

We are on, just off for a bike ride along the prom here

When I say on, that is the site, the pitch I chose against madams raised eyebrow look is a juster ? (that was site owner madam not my beloved first wife ) ?

A superb location that we return to with a numbered reserved pitch, plus we will arrive when office is open , I think she came in early due to queue ?

Lovely and warm 22C here, eating out is the plan ? will reccae while out on bikes

A little treasure this place, we have moved forward 10 m and now decided to stop here for the weekend?

25C full sun, great view, fresh bread just bought, what’s not to love ?
We are only about 20 Km from you in Metz, where we've come to do the weekly laundry. But we are off tomorrow, heading fairly rapidly south. We won't escape the rain but there should be a little less of it. :)

We looked Metz for last night, the municipal site has an Aire outside with very mixed reviews, were you on that site?

That is our next intended destination

We are in the site pitch #92. There is a bit of room on the aire outside but they are cheek by jowl and quite a lot of shade from trees so solar will be iffy. It's about €20 on the site, electric extra. It's a busy site, lots of comings and goings but very convenient for Metz. Ok for one night, we are only here for two for the laundry. :)

Forgot to add, if coming here ignore Garmin satnav if you are using one
It thinks the entrance is on the north end of the site, it isn't. The entrance is at the south end. Google Maps knows the way. There are also a few sign posts, following these if you spot one. :)
