Moselle to Mosel end to end September 2019

Bodensee is on our list but we haven't enough time this trip
We were going to do some of Austria as well but maybe next year

Today’s the day we set off, had a hiccup with mum and her respite care but all resolved and final packing about to commence

To include a dozen bottles of Lidl low cal tonic ??

Then the gentle run to Hull, about an hours drive, so much more relaxed than taking on the M25, check in window is huge 14.00 - 16.00, setting sail around 18.00

Zeebrugge around 08.00 and a gentle drive to somewhere close to the German border tomorrow ?

First time abroad for 18 months and first time back on the Hull crossing for over 10 years, bitter sweet as we can only do this now Lola has gone

Will try and add photos and comments of all stopping points along the way, which will include Koblenz and Riel early on, looking out for funsters along the way ?

If you can make it as far as Saarburg, just over the German border, the Stellplatz there is lovely, and there's enough to do in the town for a couple of nights' stay. Also, if you haven't been before, the Saarschleife is worth a visit.

bellabee thanks for that, we have it pinned for next week, our planned route is to follow the Mosel south from Koblenz, should be somewhere near there by end of next week ?

All of 74 miles from home to docks, nice cabin, just eating simple but pleasant buffet, not really sure £22 each is good value, but a pleasant start ?

Ferry currently trundling down the Humber estuary, we must have mostly travelled further out of season previously don’t remember it ever being daylight

Spurn point coming up , then next land Belgium in the morning ?

Back to our room for a gin or 2 ??, on that note P& O have stopped stocking the flavoured Tanqueray gins ? they must have been selling it off when Nat bought the Rangpur for £20 / litre ? a couple of weeks ago

Other gins look to be fairly close to supermarket pricing but might succumb to a litre of Tanqueray 10 and Blooms, £35 and £25 for litre bottles

Till tomorrow .... good night

Today we have arrived at Zeebrugge around 9.00, 9.30 by the time we disembarked and we set off with sat nag programmed for Aachen, this would get us to Germany albeit only just, passing briefly through Holland on the way

95% of the route bore no resemblance to our recollections of Belgian road surfaces but the odd bit gave a jolting reminder, there are quite a few EU funded by signs around I guess the route to Brussels should be half decent from all directions

Beautiful day 24C by the time we pulled into a near unused lay-by 15 miles from Zeebrugge where we stopped for a few coffees and a tear and share Brioche loaf

Where would you find this anywhere within 15 miles of a major UK port

Then just arrived 3 hours 40 minutes total drive

We are at a Stellplatz in Aachen, nice enough, but like. CC club site loads of gravel pitches, but 17€ that we are yet to find out how to pay, includes electrics we don’t need with this much sun and free Wi-fi which I do appreciate ?

More driving done today than I intend to this holiday but now well on our wAy to tomorrow’s stop at Koblenz, not booked yet but found a site at the mouth of the Mosel as a very suitable start to our tour up the river ?

Will have a couple of nights there to start the tour ?

Did anybody else spot my amazing mpg, not for you front wheel drive types I know, but from a V6 Mercedes that is good for us, I did top the tank in Hull with V power diesel , then we have driven at 50mph based on Tom Tom display, nice holiday pace for us, but virtually all motorway, even when free it is not our first choice

Tomorrow the more scenic bit starts ?

I have noticed that the Belgian motorways have improved dramatically over the last few years since they started to charge trucks.

Hi David, we stopped at the Aachen Stellplatz yesterday but it was full, so we drove on to Duren and stopped in a Motorhome repair shop Stellplatz which was lovely. Duren was absolutely buzzing, we drank beer and ate far too big a portion of frites and mayo!

Now at a Stellplatz at Braubach and sitting in a biergarten overlooking the Rhine. Moving onto the Mosel(Le) tomorrow.

Cliff’s envious of your MPG - we averaged 19 travelling at 60!

cliffandger

Not sure if the reserved cones were in place yesterday

There are 8 pitches all reserved but not till tomorrow, we seem to be the only ones who have read the date, or they are all staying on for longer ?

We are parked up right in the middle of the reserved cones, which earn’t me a long hard stare from the nearest German Motorhome ?

Cant work out from your stopping place which way you are heading, but we bump into you yet ?

A mini meet we very neary had ?

We’re heading for Koblenz tomorrow, we headed straight for Braubach because it was mentioned on Fun as a nice place to stop. Only realised it was farther than Kolenz when we went through Koblenz to get to it!

We were going to stay here for another day and catch the train into Koblenz. Will make our minds up tomorrow!

We have started the attach from the opposite end. ?. Camped in Trier and starting our move northwards tomorrow (Monday). May see you Somewhere in the middle during the week (y)

Well my smugness at using a reserved pitch has been somewhat deflated

Just been told off in pretty good English by the German owner ? pointing to the reserved cone, with me quoting the date saying we would go by 9, he said we had to leave by 7 ?

I went in to fetch some money and sent Bev back out ? she did German at school

First question, what time does bread cabin open, in German, 8.30, then all in German can we stay till 10

He replies OK ?

Glad I brought her ?

Will look to see if you find a good mid point or we might see you at Koblenz ?

We are likely to stop a couple of days near Koblenz but not till Wednesday or Thursday
We use Gusler Moselboden site
Short cycle into Koblenz and decent site restaurant (or it was last time we stopped there) couple of years ago. Has the world's most complex showers though?

We will be at the French end of the Moselle soon. Is anyone going that way? We did the German end last year. :)

You move at a much slower pace than us, so we have a decent chance of catching you , we should be back in France next week following the Moselle to the source before home on 1st Oct ?

Let's keep in touch on this thread. :) We are here at the moment and trundling east. Metz is on the Moselle but we want to visit Verdun on the way.

Morning , we have a sky with grey and blue bits and even a few rain spots

We bought bread from the cabin and more than complied with leaving early and are now parked I a lay-by consuming said bread with English marmalade ?

On the trip before this my reversing (360) camera display started to flicker, then didn’t come on straight away , rand the supplier on Friday as we left the next day, they diagnosed monitor fault and I found we had a connector on the monitor cable ? meaning I wouldnt have to remove the dash ?

It arrived on sat am delivery and I packed it just in case, today it didn’t come on at all, so swapped before breakfast. All good again, we don’t need it but really miss it when not ??

Koblenz today Knaus Campingpark but not booked so may not be yet ?

Was overcast here in Trier this morning but now warming up. Local Lidl a short walk away so we now stocked up.
Moving on late morning, no idea on destination will just stop when we feel like it.

If you walk through Trier Town there is a roman gateway at the rear of the town and other roman buildings. As I recall there was also a woolworths in the main shopping street. Some nice small parks and plenty of other interesting architecture.

Just tried to stop in Camping Aires Koblenz, to spend a few hours. It’s all blocked off and campers parked up on the entrance. No space left, so moving into to Knaus Camping.

So are we, just arrived pitch 167 ?

Hopefully the highest price we will pay this trip €37 / night fir a pitch no larger than a lot of aires

But we can see the Mosel and the Rhine from our pitch ??
