Morocco 23

Cheers hoping to visit Morocco next month 15th on my travel insurance unless anything unexpected comes up, never been before so these posts on here are a goldmine!
Any proper Maroc Telecom shop is fine Not any old kiosk covered in signs), but you will need your passport. There is also Inwi or Orange but ASFAIK Maroc has the best coverage.

Joining this group as heading to Maroc in January. We were last there Jan-Feb 2020. I've done my homework by reading the entire thread, phew! Great to be reminded of all those local details.
So, to kick off...Saga green card: Is it still available & is it definitely fully comp?
Also, Gaslow: Weve got 2x11kg so think we'll leave one at home to make space for a local bottle. What fitting do the Maroc bottles have & how to adapt to Gaslow?

Maroc bottles fit straight on to a Gaslow hose, no adaptor required. I used to take both Gaslow bottles and when one was empty put itmin thengarage and replace it with a local, bottle

I would take as much Spanish gas as you can get in. Moroccan bottles are cheap ( or used to be) but its oily old stuff good for knackering regulators especially if you have secumotion.

As I've posted before if you get a Calor adapter hose from Gaslow it'll screw straight onto a Maroc big bottle and into the refill point - they're opposite threads so need to be "started" at the same time to avoid twisty hoses. Don't have room to put a Maroc bottle in the gas locker so just strap it down somewhere safe in transit (I use our back box) and leave it outside when parked up.

To be honest never had a problem with dirty gas. I fitted a filter some years ago but despite checking every so often it's never needed cleaning/changing. Maybe it's where you get it from; we always used the bigger gas companies, such as Afrique.

I second that by TerryL. I fitted a LPG filter to my Maroc gas bottle and never had an issue with dirty gas ! (The paper filter was very clean when inspected after leaving Maroc). I'm of the view its much cleaner now and and members voicing concerns from gas quality that was available a while back. |Also, on my last trip I used a Maroc Butane gas bottle without any issues. (As do the majority of Moroccan's) Propane is more expensive and much harder to obtain.

Ok, so here's my Gaslow setup & a Calor (propane) bottle which takes what I know as a pigtail connection. Are you saying the Maroc cylinders are this pigtail fitting? If so, where do I connect the Maroc bottle, assuming I'll remove the front Gaslow. Can I have 1x Maroc & 1x Gaslow connected at the same time? Do I need a male to male pigtail to achieve this?

Leave both of your cylinders in place and just buy this…

Fits to your infill point and connects a loca cylinder…😎

My fill point is mounted in the front of the gas locker (see pic) so for this reason I think my best best is to replace the front Gaslow cylinder with a local bottle which I'll want to connect inside the locker. How best to do this?

When you are running out of gas and need a local cylinder, I would just connect one up to the infill with the hose in my link, when you move on just disconnect and reconnect at the next stop…
If you don’t want to do that then as mentioned by someone before the maroc bottles will accept the gaslow pigtail and do what you suggested in your post and take out one bottle and connect up a local bottle but I feel that limits your options…

How long are you over there for ? If you fill up just before you go over to Morocco you may not run out….

No, pretty sure the Maroc bottles are not that Calor bottle fitting, you need a female - see the pic on the Gaslow hose above. Are you sure it's propane? I thought propane was blue (the one I've got at home is) and red are butane.
As above, easiest just to buy the Gaslow hose. I know it's a bit of a faff carrying an extra bottle but when it's empty if you don't think you'll need a refill, just "donate" it - they're cheap enough.

We've been twice for two months.
Following the horrible incident late 2018 the police( they are everywhere) clamped down on wildcamping.and those that wanted to do so we're directed to sites. There is plenty of guardian parking which we used now and again( maybe 10 nights out of 60)

The campsites are cheap with electric ( £10 or less )and as a result we hardly used any gas. We have a 50 litre tank and we didn't use half of it, maybe 11 kg.

The maroc telecom shop in asilah is closed on saterday and Sunday , we went to the telecom shop in marjan mohammedia ! You can get data sims from Carlos so you can use your mobile for Sat nav

Anybody crossed within the last couple of weeks? Would you mind letting us know the ferry prices now? Also any changes to procedures?
Facebook seems to indicate there area few Funsters in Morocco already.

Can any old-timers let me know if it’s generally permitted to cook on a charcoal bbq in Morocco? And how about on open fires? HWMBO is very keen on fire cooking.

I've had 2 blocked regs over there Phil, granted they were secumotion which are a bit finicky, but second time I had the truma filters on and it still went. Ended up cutting the pipe and jubilee clipping a pipe to a bottle reg. Last time I filled up at Algeciras and managed to get through.

Go to any Moroccan restaurant serving Tajines (basically all of them) and they will be cooking them on charcoal!

I thought the campsites might be fussier :)
I don’t think Moroccan campsites will be very worried. there are probably only 2 or 3 in the country that will meet European standards. They will just be glad to see you.

Ther are now quite a few that meet European standards.

I think my tank is only 20 litres am I right in thinking there's nowhere to fill an underslung tank in Morocco?
As for electric can you remember the amperage, the Spanish site I'm on is only 5 amps and when I tried to use my 750w kettle it tripped so had to use gas kettle for tea/coffee, either they not telling the truth or it's because my water heater, battery charger, fridge combined to take it over.

Just changed to Saga prior to this trip as my previous insurance wouldn't cover me for Morocco, I had to answer a few questions after I'd taken out the main insurance for the moroccon green card telling them dates of travel etc but didn't seem to be a problem getting cover, I'm sure he said it was comprehensive cover the same as in the other countries covered by the green card, ask him to verify it if you decide to go with them

Have a read of my article in "Resources" - answers all your questions. But nevertheless:-
There is nowhere to fill an underslung tank anywhere in Morocco. See my article or above for alternates.
Amperage? You'll be lucky to get volts! Although 220/240v is the published standard only the best campsites will get anywhere near that, that's why you see so many voltage regulators connected up to (mainly French) motorhomes. Amps is like anywhere else, occasionally you get up to 16 amps (rare) but it can be as low as 1. I've never relied too much on hookups in Morocco; as there is so much sun my 100 (now 200) watt solar panels recharge my 2 leisure batteries before we get up!

Thanks TerryL I have a 100w solar panel and 2 lithium 110ah batterries but I've never tried them out yet I'm so used to using the convience of hookup, I might try experimenting with them I have a 1000w inverter.

Do you have b2b charging as well?

Might be a good bit of prep to try and get a bitmore solar on, as Terry says voltage is a bit erratic

Don't have a lot of real estate on my roof for another panel, don't know if they've managed to design panels with higher wattages at the same size of my 100w one but I'm away at the moment I'll certainly be checking it out when I get back.

We never had any issues with electric supply. Certainly enough for a kettle like yours, small microwave, fridge, 1000 w heater ( not all at same time!)
Some of the electric connections are a bit primative but worked even on the most remote sites.
As others have said the voltage fluctuates a lot and loads of people have voltage regulators .

Our motorhome is old and we had no problems but the newer ones had fridge problems because of it.

We haven't come across anyone filling an underslung tank
