Morocco 23

For what it's worth I've just cancelled my insurance policy with Comfort after many years with them & told them the exact reason for cancelling (no longer covering Morocco at any level!)
And at the same time I took out a 3 year deal guaranteed price with Saga and after several assurances including in writing I can also confirm the green card is free and the cover is fully comprehensive including protected no claims etc
Comforts lose is Saga's gain (even took out my travelling insurance with them too which looks top notch as well) 👍

We’ve just renewed our Saga 3 year fixed price deal and couldnt believe it was £20 cheaper this time 😳.
The Green Card for Maroc issue, was the sole reason we left Safeguard. However, with Saga, they will only issue the green card 30 days prior to your intended departure to Maroc. They want to know the port you will sail from and to, plus the crossing dates, and duration of your stay in Maroc. They also stipulate that any MOT remains in date during the green card timeframe. In addition they queried the fact that both insured drivers (me & Lynda) are prepared to drive in the event of a problem over there.
Interestingly, Saga will also issue a green card for Tunisia and Turkey which many other insurers wont. However, not sure what criteria they require the client to meet for those countries.
As Paul has stated the big three have lost a lot of business over Not covering Maroc.

Anyone have any thoughts on the best paper map? We use it mostly for longer term planning, general direction to head, etc.

While I’m on the subject of maps, we have a Garmin sat nav. Is it worth buying any extra maps for it, if they even exist?

Michelin map is about the best, but Maps.me app works well.

It's pretty easy to navigate Morrocco unless you get to the far reaches where the signposts are in squiggle.

Depends on which model of Garmin you have, you can buy an SD card with Morocco installed or you can download Morocco straight onto your Garmin unit ( mine can download straight to the unit) but as others have said its fairly easy to navigate around Morocco, but a paper map is always a good back up we have a wee Michelin foldy one was is dead on 👍

If you buy Michelin 742 make sure it's the updated one. Ours is 2015 and several really great roads are shown as tracks.

We've also got this one which I prefer 2018 edition

Give me a map any day when you can't read the " squiggles! ( Arabic and Berber).

I’ve just bought a National geographic map, because of the places of interest indicated.
But just a punt in the dark.
We use Maps.me for navigation.
We also use guru app whilst walking as I like to track the walking routes we have explored.
Used guru for years so it give a good indication of areas walked by us.
It’s quite handy as whilst walking you find some great off the beaten track to wildcamp, so just place a poi in the spot.

On the insurance front, and it may already have been posted 🤭 but I saw this on FB today”

“Big News! Morocco Insurance Alert - a game changer!

Calling all Morocco lovers! Up until now we have all been frustrated that the only cover we can get for our vehicles is the 3rd Party option at the Moroccan border.

Well call me persistent - I decided to give it one more push. I spoke to BIBA (British Insurance Broker Association) and asked their advice about anyone out there offering a temporary cover. They put me in touch with Sterling (formerly HIC) who seem to offer a range of bespoke products not offered by the other big players. After a week of to'ing and fro'ing yesterday I got a quote that had come back from the underwriters offering us a comprehensive policy for either two or three months. Yes you read it right COMPREHENSIVE!

A little dubious I spoke to them again today to be sure that the paperwork was right and they have confirmed that Morocco is covered under this policy offered by Trinity Insurance. They will send a Green Card to that effect. The only thing not covered is the windscreen. Now it's not cheap! For two months we have been quoted £757.86 and for three £934.82. Although it is comprehensive and could make a huge difference to those who want to extend their winter and Schengen Shuffle travel.

I hope this might be useful for some of you out there. If you are interested then give Sterling a call on 0344 381 9990.“

Ian 👍

There is a Michelin, I think a 742, but it's updated/overwritten specifically for Morocco and we found it really good. However I've never seen it on sale outside of Maroc and only then in the large supermarkets - got ours at Marjan in Agadir (the northern one).
Not up-to-date with Garmins but I know I couldn't get a map for ours when we first went. Since then I've been using TomTom and they're fine. Maps.me is very good also.
Just a tip, a compass can also be of help if you're off the beaten track. Got well and truly lost once and had to flag down the only car we'd seen for hours to ask directions!

Yes it's been posted before - and yes it is expensive; I'd never pay that much. Especially as we get fully comp from SAGA included in our normal insurance (which is still only half that price) on a free Green Card.

It's a MasterCard so in theory the answer is yes. I have one too but don't recall trying to use it in Morocco as it was meant for use in Europe. Used a normal UK card (Barclaycard if I remember) for cash withdrawals in Maroc. Yes I know there are better cards around but that's another thread.

For saving waypoints, can I toot my own horn a bit? Jim please remove if inappropriate.

I'm an iOS developer and I have an app called Mundus on the App Store, for iPhone and iPad. It's exactly for saving places you want to visit on holiday and has a wide range of pins for types of campsites, so you can remember if it's a wild camp, aire, camp site etc. It's designed to be an improved UI to something like Google maps for saving places - you just search and if Apple knows of the place*, you can add it with one touch. Also there's a filter menu so you can quickly view e.g. favourites, restaurants, tourist sites, campsites, hotels etc.

* It often doesn't with Morocco!

It's free to try and then there's a one off payment for lifetime use*, not a recurring subscription.

* Mine, yours or Apple's... Or until I need more cash and do v2 :)

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/mundus/id1417812704

If anyone does use it, I'd love some feedback.

Sorry if a dumb question, but does it effectively overlay additional functionality on Google maps then? Kind of a plug in?

Nope, it's a stand-alone iOS app, and the base maps are actually Apple Maps. (I did try using Google's but although the maps were better, I didn't find the SDk as useful for what I needed to do).

BTW the reviews are a lot better than that link shows in a browser - no idea why! It mostly gets 5 stars.

Is that google just flexing their muscles and not allowing you to develop in their sandbox? The corporate side of google paints the picture of easy api integration, extensions and supporting third party developers. Clearly not your experience?

The problem is I love google maps and I’ve got used to tagging places to go, place we love, places we heard about, places we spotted etc etc…. It’s far from a perfect way of using it and I’d love more functionality in this area and easier tagging etc, so was very excited when you posted.

Is it possible to add in What3words references and maybe take you to your preferred navigation app when returning to the app to navigate to the required saved pin

Thanks for the feedback. What 3 words is on the roadmap!

Also, there is a secret feature - if you enter the GPS coords of a place in brackets, like this (1.23, 53.4), then you will get a pin at that place. I'd probably do similar with W3W.

To be honest, I haven't done much to the app for 2 years while I've been studying with the OU, but I've picked it back up again a couple of months ago and want to get on with some new features. MHF feedback would be super useful in prioritising.

I've not thought about navigating in another app. It would need to support deep linking. Which app(s) did you have in mind?

Carpmart - I was looking at the Google Maps SDK for iOS rather than any browser type integration, as I wanted a first class iOS app. (Ideally I would have offline maps, but that was a whole other ballgame). I'd have to dig out my notes to find out why I preferred the Apple Maps SDK, as it was a fair few years ago now that I made the decision. Maybe things have changed - but it would be a major change for me to switch horses midstream. To be honest, if you're big into Google maps, I don't think this app is the right choice for you :(

I would suggest that the Funsters use a number of different navigation apps on their phones. As an example I have Apple Maps, Google maps, Sygic Truck and Sygic (cars), TomTom, Waze and Maps.me I would hope that you could either set a preferred app in settings or presented a choice of your installed apps on your device. Hope that this helps.

Garmin would be my choice. An IOS Apple place of interest, w3w type of thing where I could select a couple of waypoints to set the route I want to use, rather than the satnav want me to use, then upload to Garmin would be ace!

Just got it.
only found it through your link not on the App Store, was it just listed in the USA?
just had a quick play with it, and looking at a local walk which was on it, found that the amount of zoom in was to close and obscured the wider view.
Guru , on checking gave me the track with a larger viewing window.
maps.me did not give me route.
I will play with it some more.
Thanks
John

Does anyone take their dog to Morocco and is it a problem returning? she has had the titre test. Also could anyone give me inspiration to go with a description of it please

We've taken our Westie Jamie three/four times with absolutely no problems although they were all before Brexit (I think!). No, I tell a lie - the last time was the "great escape" where we got out by the skin of our teeth via Ceuta which is a land border. That was where the Spanish Customs went through all the documentation but all was okay, titre test, UK Pet Passport etc. He's now got a European PP so hopefully that'll help.
Apart from that I don't think anyone has returned from Morocco with a pet recently so, as yet, we don't know what, if anything, has changed but the way I read it I'm not concerned if we do manage to get there this winter.

Morocco Customs has never been interested in pets, either in or out. I'll just repeat what I've said before; Moroccans don't "get" the idea of dogs as pets. Just keep yours under control and away from the thousands of strays.

As for inspiration go look at the previous Morocco threads - 2015 and 2016 particularly good with loads of beautiful photos. If you are a bit nervous try to arrange to cross with an "old hand" but it's really no more difficult than Dover/Calais. Once there almost everyone wonders why they were ever concerned.

So, we missed this in 2022 - wife broke her leg on December 23rd - pandemic - you name it. So, we will be going January 2023 - let us know if you are going - helps to cross together.
This is somewhere I’d love to take our Motorhome. We are 9m long so would still expect the ferries to cope with it? Any info about security and safety would be good. Also about the terrain please. We would be going in April. But yes safety in numbers!

Last time we went we were 9m, no problems at all, having said that after recent trips to Turkey I've bought a wee van now lol but yes no problem at all with 9 metres in Maroc (here we are top of the Atlas mountains)
And great fun on some of the roads like this & finally big van, wee van 😂👍,
