Morocco 23

So, we missed this in 2022 - wife broke her leg on December 23rd - pandemic - you name it. So, we will be going January 2023 - let us know if you are going - helps to cross together.
We have just booked the ferry to Santander on 9th January so will reach Algeciras in Mid January; is that too late to share a crossing?

I would like to go to Nazaré Portugal around November for about 4 weeks to see if I can see the 30 metre waves I've heard about, then try and spend the winter in the south of Spain, but then it means with the schengen rules I have to return by the end of January to the UK winter weather.
Am I correct in thinking if I spend 4 weeks in Portugal, 2 weeks in southern Spain then go over to Morocco for say 4 weeks or more I can return into schengen with 6 weeks left within the schengen rules?
That way I can delay my return back to the UK for 16 weeks or more depending on how long I stay in Africa out of Schengen, which means a UK return in March or later?

Yes, days in Morocco don't count towards the 90, but you do have to count the days the ferry leaves and returns to Spain.

Most people want more than 4 weeks in Morocco, Its a big country abd if the weather is bad in Southern Spain, it will be very similar in Northern Morocco, they re only 20 miles apart, so you need to get below Casablanca before it gets nicer in scenery ( with a few exceptions) as well and by then you re either hooked or already on your way home.

March 1st 2023 I turn 60, I know, I could still pass for 30 (he lies!) but I am. I want to invite My family and friends to join me in Morocco to celebrate. So, can anyone recommend a campsite with both motorhome pitches and lodges/cabins etc somewhere it will be warm in February. I was thinking near Marrakech or Agadir but have never been to Morocco so open to advice. Thanks

Cannot remember ever seeing that sort of accommodation on Moroccan campsites - there again not visited them all and there is a considerable amount of tourist development going on so..............?

However I do know that some hotels allow motorhomes to stay in their grounds, often with use of all facilities, sort of the other way round to what you're thinking. Perhaps something like that would suit although you probably won't find one near to the larger centres such as Marrakesh.

Over to the more experienced Moroccan travellers!

I do know one of the hotels on the front at Essaouira was allowing one motorhome to stay in their parking while the family were staying in the hotel, either Medina or Mogadour.

You could also stay in parking Koutubia just off Jemaa El Fnaa in Marakech, nice and close to many Riads.

Be good to have morale support of crossing together
if you re feeling nervous take the Algeciras Tanger Med crossing. Tanger med is the easiest access etc to deal with and deals with the border at the same time. Just don't follow the Vans in Tanger Med, go straight up the hill to the top.

Hi yes le Relais in Marrakesh stopped there a few times, great city as well. Just been reading wiz air are starting up flights there this winter

In February you could probably get a good deal at a reasonable hotel for your friends and family and you could park up in their grounds with the MH. Just check a few out ,must be loads with very few clientele at the mo.

I'll be honest it scares us a little bit, just not sure at all, even though i've read that loads of travellers love it, i've also read the very opposite from loads of travellers.

I see you've said "it helps to cross together"

May I ask why, I read that as "safety in no's"

I'm very interested tbh in how it goes for all of you and what things you all get up to so will be reading with interest.

Couple of questions, how long does the ferry take and an approx return cost for an 8.8 mtr motorhome

cheers

Al
Hi we have been a few times and I was like you at first but honestly it is very safe. It’s just if it’s your first time it’s easier to go with others as the paperwork can be confusing. Don’t expect European standards for campsites we usually stay guarded camping which is basically someone sits on a chair and watches all night. No facilities and is about 3 euros a night. Motorways are modern other roads can drift out to nothing. If you stay down the Atlantic coast it feels more European. Fuel and food are very cheap and the food is delicious. You can get any repairs and refurbishment on your motorhome you want/need cheaply. The ferry is the same price irrespective of the size of your motorhome. We usually use Carlos for the tickets as most on here do. We are hoping to go this January if all goes to plan.

Hoping to also be going early January 2023 🙂
Currently halfway down the Adriatic side of Italy getting this weekend ferry to Greece from Brindisi then touring around Greece and Turkey until early June then heading back home, then off again July until early September so by the time we've all that done we'll need a holiday in Maroc 🙂
Watch out for the high temperatures in Turkiye, I decided against staying once they hit 39C and were predicted to go to 45C in Cappadocia. Italian friends currently in Porto Sant Giorgio ( on the way to Brindisi) said it was almost too hot for them. When you get off the ferry at 23.00 hrs park up near the Transit hall free of charge. Restaurants close by and if you need respite from the heat the transit hall is air conditioned and has free to use toilets and washrooms.

We are going to Cappadocia but not until early November. Should have cooled down by then.

I have just received an email from Carlos saying he cannot quote for crossings in January at the moment. If the people who are thinking of going to Morocco in January get together and decide on a date to cross he will no doubt offer a discount as he has done previously. Perhaps we could discuss this say in late November to see the numbers

Jess, our dog, is the little black one. Other is a street dog who we christened Brownie. It had a nice nature and Jess tolerated him.

Did you notice if the brown street dog had a yellow tag in his ear? If he did he had been neutered, and treated against Rabies by SFT in Tangier!I brought some dogs home from Tangier one who lives with me here in Bolton in Lancashire.

We’d definitely be interested (y)

Why do you say that? Since Tangier Med opened the crossing has been very easy, a little strange sometimes but not much different to Dover, Calais. We have been going there for over 40 years and never had a problem. All you really need is patience and all the correct documents and a very small spattering of French.

It could take half an hour to get through the port, it could take half a day but it doesn't really matter when you are on holiday, just all part of the experience with many more to follow. I have never ever paid a tip or bribe and only very rarely "Something for the Children"
I haven't been for four years but I am sure it will not have changed except for the better.

For Al n Val last time we crossed, it was €200 from Carlos for an open ferry ticket almost regardless of size. But it has probably changed after the pandemic if Carlos's shop is still going. The ferry's rarely ran to time (always at least an hour late) but a very smooth crossing just long enough to que up to get your passports stamped by the Police on-board.
I think you will find something in the files section explaining the whole process.

You need your vehicle documents including for a scooter or motorbike if you carry one.

There is a road sign at some junctions that looks looks like a taboggan, it is a STOP sign and you MUST stop. Look both was a couple of times and put your handbrake on so that your wheels are DEFINITELY stationary for a few seconds. There are often police hiding waiting to give foreigners a hefty on the spot fine.

Just go for it, it is a wonderful experience, well worth it.

Steve
Excellent overview 👍and yes we were caught out by the 'toboggan' when we turned into a service station, no other vehicles around as far as the eye can see and we rolled slowly over the road markings. Oops out pops an immaculatly dresses policeman pen poised and a £40 fine..no ifs, no buts, no sympathy bless him. Accept we were in the wrong 🤔. Other small piece of advice, don't overtake anything approaching a road block of which there are many, not even a donkey ..the police don't like that one bit.

A nice plus are the service stations, many have excellent cafés attached and good clean toilet facilities.
We are looking forward to our second visit January 2023.

Has anyone taken a

Has anyone taken a dog?
Yes we took our dog last time and tbh she appeared to provoke alot of friendly interest from locals mainly as we were told later, because she is black, an unusual colour in that country for dogs. We were often stopped for photos especially by children and females.

Just about to renew our Motorhome Insurance. With Morocco in mind, who covers it green card wise?
