Morocco 2019

Bugger! I'm asking that question in the wrong place. I'll ask again on the main forum.

Jan 1 yes, kings day a bit iffy !!

Watching this thread with interest, after our break in Portugal last winter which was a bit cooler and windier than we had hoped for. We are giving thought to jumping on a January Ferry to Maroc in search of warmth, I have been before on a motorbike but never in the Moho.

Don't think about it, just do it!

We couldn't go last winter (family commitments), just stayed in Spain. Like you we were disappointed with the weather so looking forward to this season. Just remember, though, you need to travel a way south, at least past the mountains otherwise it's pretty much the same as Spain/Portugal. Anywhere south of Agadir is normally fine, though it can get breezy on the coast.

Checkout the various annual threads.

I’ve ordered a Michelin map, that’s a good start.

many uk insurance companies have their main office in gibralter . its worth visiting them in gib.
i have known companies give green cards in gib even if the uk branch says they arent available .

I was told , via comfort, that for upto 6 weeks is £33.60 a week, over 6 weeks is more expensive, plus an admin charge.

it used to be hard to get green cards in for morocco. in the 70,s etc it was then many of us found the gib offices worked. got easier in uk in the 90,s ,but some did restrict the times.
used the border insurance several times over the years but never had a claim ,. uk campers etc have been going to maroc for years , i first went with my parents in the early 60,s .
back then it was almost get insurance at every border we crossed.
was fun messing the customs men etc by ducking down and popping up at different windows etc .
but the hippy trail worked.

I'm thinking this might be our last trip to Morocco. What with the Green Card fiasco and costs creeping up, it will not be long before it's cheaper to over winter in Spain. Of course, there's a lot more to overwonterong in Morocco than the cost alone, hence our third trip. However, I think time is running out for those wanting to over winter with a motorhome. Do it while you can.

Problem is that you don't want to drive all the way to Gibraltar only to find out that you still can't get a green card. ...
if you go over to Morocco and try to buy insurance at the border insurance boxes and they know about the English not getting insurance in uk what will be their prices. .

When I last entered Morocco on a motorbike I think a months third party insurance from the boxes was around 950 Dh or approx £75. A motorhome will be proportionaly more. I will be checking with C & CC this week to see if they can help with a green card, their website suggests it may be possible, if not we will take a chance with the border insurance.

I think you may have a point, maybe somebody should compile a photographic record before it's too late?

last time i heard it was about 120 quid for 90 days .
i have been with others and they got insurance at tangiers , but havnt used the new port . so dont know what ,where you can . but i prefer ceuta and there was insurance places in the port or across the road.
also there was a good cheap alchol store on the right as you left the port. or leaving it i should have said.
i bet a few on here will know more recent happenings . i havnt been for a few years these days as i dont like the quantity of m,homes that are getting over there now. its changed the way and life for m,homers these days . was nicer when there wasnt so many.

Yes, @vwalan , things are changing which I suppose is inevitable and will probably mean this will be our last visit to Morocco, though I never say never. Anyone contemplating visiting for the first time should probably get in now, although if you are prepared to get out "into the sticks" there will always be the true country.

As regards local insurance there is an office at Tangier-Med next to the Bureaux de Change (after Customs/Immigration) where I know Funsters have got their vans and motorcycles covered.

I'm looking forward to using the new toll road to bypass Rabat next year. I've found it a pain in the bum in the past, long traffic ques snaking through the city. It will be good to bomb past in a few minutes this time.

Thanks Phil (and others)for the fabulous photos that help us prepare for our first visit in early January...........I think we'll do New Year in Estepona and look to cross on 3/4 Jan so as to avoid the 3 kings.

We paid Comfort almost £250 for 90 days cover...................and I'm sure all the others will soon catch up with that price.

I hope overwintering in Spain will be an alternative, but my fear is that after "you know what" they will start to charge to visit foreign countries like France and Spain.................and why will the insurance companies do this................................because they will be able to.

Agreed, it's easy to get caught out. The plod are everywhere with there little speed camera's. Concentration is required at all times.
