Morelo For Beginners

One of my bikes has to stand outside from the main garage, all wrapped up, but the winds from Dennis were so strong on Sunday that it went over and its mint fairing is no more.

Ouch!

Which of your bikes drew the short straw then?

Ian

If anyone knows of anything that comes in kit form Really needs to be at least 11 or 12 metre long and 6 metres wide and 4 metres high. I did look at a steel framed build but it was expensive otherwise building a shelter seems the best option

ZX10, Ian, left lower fairing - have you got any glue I can borrow please? :frowny:

somebody posted one on here a while back but can't think what to search?

The direct Army surplus suppliers at Whitham can do a 20m(l) x 10m(w) x 5m(h) shelter for costs between £500 and £1,000. They don't have any for sale at the moment but they do come up every few months.

Most are new unissued army stock.

And me too Andrew, we have just got planning permission for our hutch from Durham county council second time of asking

That has been hard work for you Paul. We won't be staying in Durham and we'll likely me moving to the central Highlands later this year.

We'll keep a footprint in Durham so that I can have a bacon butty with you from time to time.

Any good:

Ian

Sadly not sir. It is a B2 variant so you're bang on the money. It's actually propped on its side as the wind in our area is still horrendous.

I would just worry if we had a Morelo outside now and the trees came down on it.

AA do recover over 7.5t I have it through my insurance policy. When I was with Comfort insurance they used to use the RAC, I broke down near Cambridge on the A14 on phoning the RAC the told me Comfort had changed to the AA, I phoned them and a big wrecker came out and towed me back to Ipswich after removing a half shaft and lifting the front wheels off the ground.

I have now changed to Safeguard because they were cheaper and they use AA as well.
No weight or length limit and recovery anywhere in Europe except I think North Macedonia and Albania.
Unless you have a problem with the back axle, height wouldn't be a problem as you can be towed.

Thanks olley, it's good to have options. Cheers for the post-up.

Gosh, you are having a total life rethink! This is interesting as, although both still working at the moment, retirement creeps closer. We’re unlikely to stay in Ayr for ever, and are struggling to decide on our U.K. base. We’ll redesign and keep the Torridon house, I think, and a van ... but would like another base. So the purpose of taking your thread totally off track was sheer nosiness .... where in central highlands are you thinking of?

Hi Liz, we've both got a big thing for Laggan, just up from the Ardverikie Estate. We were hoping to be there this week (and then on to Harris) but a few pals up there sent us the pics of the weather - not good.

It may sound funny but if we do relocate then Nic and I will have to give due consideration for the van we choose and how to store it.

If we had built that in our area then it would already be sailing down the valley by now - it doesn't look at all strong.

You need to buy yourself somewhere where you can have one like mine then a good 30 tonnes of reinforced concrete sat under it and 75 tonnes of concrete lego blocks to the side of it, if you re down Shropshire way send me a pm and you can come and have a look - the weater slightly better here but bring wellies.

Hi Andrew Blue Knight

You can take out RAC cover for motorhomes independent of C&MC, we took it out with a RAC guy at one of the shows a few years ago no limit's weight height or length, the buggers put the price up every year by an extortionate amount so you have to call them.

Not sure about the IVECO chassis cover TBH, that could be a question at handover(y)

Martin

I realised that in my initial post about membership of a club to get the RAC Arrival I said C&MC when I meant C&CC.

Anyhow...I thought I'd check with RAC about the membership of C&CC criteria - they said that you do have to be a membership of the club. Apparently for large vehicles they use the C&CC equipment. There's no size or weight restrictions and covers Europe.

I've written to NFU about the cover they provide in the event of accident. Their policy booklet looks to be in plain English but in fact it is confusing, so much so that I've given up trying to decipher it! I'll report back when I get definite info.

Lovely area Andrew, nice place to base yourselves. Yes, if you decide to keep the van at home, snow will be a consideration. I know it sounds strange but might be worth looking at how some Bavarian outbuildings are built .it always strikes me that we are continually surprised by our weather ... ?

Of course when looking at new properties Andrew you can take into consideration parking, storage and a garage or room for one, preferably not in front of the main elevation

Have emailed them with detail. Looks like they know what they are doing
I thought it looked pretty sturdy, quality Mh outside it as well(y)
It is somewhat ironic that the most weatherproof motorhomes tend to have the better shelters though

Here's a useful link which I have been reading this morning over my coffee.

I've been reading a few similiar articles recently but it seems that just because you're spending £230K to £450k on a motorhome then don't expect the experience to be a golden one every time.

With you attacking from the left and me from the right then we should have a good idea soon enough about the various NFU T&Cs.

I've just looked at the pics again and I would only build something like that in an already sheltered location.

The steel work and the general fabrication of the roof platform is just too flimsy for where we would want to build it.

In the Highlands I would use steel approx twice as wide in both directions.

I don't think I have followed this one particularly but for sure you can have problems whatever you buy and how much you spend, I am going in prepared to be disappointed so hopefully so hopefully I am disappointed if you know what I mean.

We bought a caravan a lot of years ago, top quality/top price and had a series of problems that I expected the dealer/manufacturer to sort out, eventually we traded it for the new model with a good buy back from the dealer, I then just decided that if something wasn't right I would just get on and sort it and enjoy using the van, kept it 14 years and sold it to the first to see.

They do seem to have an on site visit design team so I guess that could be taken into account? Also, I would look to get some of the side panels they show which stop the driving rain and probably help break the wind force.

It has struck me while reading this thread that people with upmarket MHs are understandably wanting to protect them with coverage (Physical not insurance), but also have the space to do it, compared with people who cannot fit a 7m MH on their driveway.

Obviously some people have enough money for expensive and largish properties, but some of us have largish ones but not so expensive because of the areas. I imagine that land in Paul's area is cheap compared with SE, and ours is because it is Poland.

Anyway, for whatever the reason, money or space, we are the lucky ones to have nice MHs and space for cover. Although AFAIK nobody keeps a MH in an enclosed garage at home. We could easily fill-in between the pillars on the side away from the outhouses, and the end and put a door on front, but I have not felt the need.

Anybodyy and enclosed garage at home?

If we moved to UK and wanted to keep the MH under cover we would have to sell my terraced house in SW London and move quite a way out to get enough land, which we probably would do anyway.

Geoff

I can probably send you a copy of my policy if that helps - just PM me and I can scan and send

You're an absolute star but what I'll do for now is phone them tomorrow and hear the detail(s) from the horses mouth.

I've been doing a bit of digging and it does indeed appear that the Louth Branch is the main POC for MoHo's as what you guys have already mentioned in your previous post.

Out&About Live use the Louth Branch in its NFU advert:
