More money than sense, or impulse buyers...

It often seems to be drive away awning / safari type rooms for sale, used once.
They seem like a good idea but in practice a waste of time ?
Funnily enough ours has been worth it's weight in gold, may not e used often but the cost far outweighs the cost of a bigger van, more expensive ferry fares lower MPG when we take the grandsprogs, so although not used all the time, you wont be seeing it in the classifieds any time soon.
However we have quite a few things we don't use often or no longer use and the triplicates in the doblo 😂

Sad to hear stuff being thrown away Mr Brains… I am currently working with homeless people refugees and asylum seekers-and there is a great need for these items…. But it is not always possible for charities to store or transport items. Makes me despair at the waste- the unfairness of haves( have loads) and the have nots…not got a solution, jus’ saying.
And sorry for your losses- I know it can be heartbreaking packing up the ephemera of a life xxx
Believe me we tried to move the stuff on.

We would have been happy to pay for transportation, if for no other reason than it would be cheaper than the multiple commercial tip runs that have cost well into four, possibly five figures.

The issue is that there does not seem to be a national 'house clearance' company.
Someone prepared, at fairly short notice, to totally clear a house, and sell what they can at auction for the family (for a percentage of course) and donate what they can not to worthy charities.
The biggest issue is storage space, the charities simply do not have nearly enough.

The problem is no one wants beds, even brand new beds, we have destroyed a number of singles and doubles, some may have been used for a couple of weeks at most.
Sofas and armchairs, even if brand new, if they don't have the fire retardant labels, I understand no one wants, but it's a shame to seem them just sent to the tip, when the same model is still available in the shops for a four figure sum.

Linen and bedding, we even tried the dog shelters, no one is interested, at a guess I'd say we have thrown away enough bedding for perhaps 50 beds.

Books: Thousands of them.
Kitchen/dining room x 5, All gone to the tip, nothing saved.

The only place we actually found that wanted much of the stuff was the Sue Ryder shop in Prague and the Red Cross distribution centre in Bodmin, but even they had to ask us to stop as by the 4rd van load (LWB Sprinter) they could take no more.

FYI:
We cleared out a one bed flat in north London, a big three bed house with workshop in north London with over 100 years of occupancy by the same family, another one bed flat in north London, a one bed house in Cornwall, a two bed flat in Prague and a big four bed farm house in Cornwall with workshop and studio and outbuildings.

Barring any more family disasters , I'm hoping not to need to do this again anytime soon.

Solid state is Sony TA-FE330 R (70 watts per channel into 4ohms)
Valve amp is AVC KT88 Triode Connection- Lim Signature

My first thought was indeed "there could be a taker for the amps".....advertise on hifi specialist sites?

I’d have no trouble in selling the valve amp as they are short in supply and there are few suppliers. But I’m keeping this as a reserve for my main valve amp.

But the Sony could go to whoever collects it free of charge. I’m not going to go down the route of packing and sending. Supplied an item to a poster on this forum after packing it carefully and using the poster’s preferred carrier only to find it had arrived damaged. Not my fault but refunded the poster without demur to avoid unpleasantness. But won’t be prepared to send stuff again. 👍

I used to be on a Motorcycle forum. I used to advertise the stuff, send it and ask them to pay once they’re happy. I know, not the usual way, but when you have been using the forum for years, and the people you’re sending too you’ve developed a rapport with, it worked fine.

Until one guy kept saying, I’ve sent you a cheque (remember those?) then Postal Orders (remember those?) then cash (remember that?). Took six months, but I didn’t give up. And that guy stopped me doing it ever again.

Yes I’ve got a blow up windbreak that I thought I needed after a very windy week at Terversal CCC. It’s been in the shed every since I bought it.

Totally get that....I have loads of 'stuff' of some value, but couldn't be bothered with all the faff around turning it into petty cash!

I had a spare JVC VCR in a box that a kind neighbour offered me once, for free. It replaced the one blown up by a power surge after the recent blackout. Finally the spare one came in handy! :dance2:

I still have loads of sentimental stuff from my parents' last house in the loft, the garage, the utility room, and my shed. It's difficult to dispose of because it triggers memories from childhood.

I have a load of new caravan stuff, including a Used Once Kampa 320 Blow Up Awning inc The gale kit poles for the side of the van, 2 Aquarolls, I WasteHog, Alco No ## Wheel lock, Alco Hitch Lock, and a load of other stuff that I cant be arsed to sell on E Bay, its the cost and trouble of posting it that puts me off.
I always intend to bring all the stuff to a Fun Meet Bring & Buy, then I remember we have all got motor homes & Campervans, you ex tuggers on here can probably match my hoard. :giggle:

This video 'The ballad of Lidl & Aldi' captures it brilliantly.

As long as we stop at hoarding we’re OK, or that’s what I keep telling myself. I do occasionally worry when I notice dust and my total lack of interest in housework that it might be the early stages of Diogenes syndrome. The solution of course is to suggest that Nick does some cleaning whilst I’m at the gym if he’s not playing golf and gets bored!

Diogenes syndrome, to save you looking it up, is those people (usually old or with mental health issues) who live in absolute squalor who won’t throw anything out, surrounded by piles of newspapers, rubbish etc

I am a sucker for a good torch got loads of them but always seem to need another 😂
I also still can't get it out if my head 4yrs ago when the sales guy at the Peterborough show made me believe I needed a Diablo sandwich maker it's still new in the box😂
Had a maglite once had all the floor boards up in brothers house helping with s rewire and think it is now entombed there as we couldn't find it when we put all them back and just couldnt/wouldn't take them all back up.

Diabolo-

When my wife passed her motorcycle test, I told her I‘d show her how to clean and maintain her bike.

’Fine’ she said. ‘I’ll show you how to clean the house’……I do the car, Van and both bikes.🤐

Anyone impulse bought a Piaggio mp3 or similar they would like to sell on 😆

One of my best acquisitions was in an Essex church 29/7/72. Still going strong with minimum maintenance.

They really would like the silver back Larby , just because you put a pound into the collection does not entitle you to all the Alter Silver however polished you may have kept it!

I browse through the "Classifieds" now and then...

And it amazes me how many articles for sale are new or used once or hardly used...

Is it because of more money than sense or I must have one of those...

Or keeping up with the Joneses...!!!

I have done it myself.... buy an item only to be chucked in a locker or in the garage at home and eventually given away to make room for the next purchase I don`t really need....

Am I - was I the only one...

Come on own up.... :giggler:
There’s an easy solution to that don’t ever and I mean never buy anything at a Show. You’ll get it cheaper on Amazon and
you probably won’t need it.
Another big plus is you don’t need to carry it all the way around the Show into the car park afterwards.

We have a 4m Thule residence G3 awning sides and front. Used maybe a dozen times. In those days we towed a little car on a trailer, so it made sense. We also had a hexagon gazebo thing, which we used a couple of times.

Then we decided to sack the little car and instead use the bus for transport (there are four of us). The G3 is redundant because it is a 40 minute faff to put up or down, just to nip out for a shop or visit.

So we got a Kampa 390 inflatable drive away, which we are using, and we like it! We tow a tiddly unbraked trailer. It works for us, but if the Government do decide to increase post 1997 licence weight limits, then the trailer may also become redundant.

Like you all, I also have two sheds that are literally full of bits that I maybe used once, or never. Hoses, jacks, bikes, pegs, aqua roll, spare parts, you name it. And by full, I mean unable to even get in to get stuff out. However, like many others here, I know that about seven minutes after I have sold something, I will need it.

The problem is simple. Much of this stuff has a second hand value that is not worth someone driving to us to pick it up; and it is simply too heavy or bulky to post.

Recently, Mrs DDJC has been leafing through the internet for skip hire. I'm in trouble here. :crying1:

I dread to think whats in the loft of my garage. Anything that looks useful rather than end up in the bin or down the tip goes up there. The 2 kids tell me the first thing they’ll do when I’m gone is get the largest skip possible and skip the lot. I reply, saying make sure you weigh it in.

You have human rights sir!

Not many, I fall into the property owning, pound poor, middle class white man category. We have no pressure groups to lobby for us, in Britain today, you have to be a young single female mother, very poor or very rich to receive many 'rights'!

Edit: Sorry for rant!

Yes we all do it, I looked in a drawer last week I came across an old pen knife I had bought 40 years ago for 75p
Not used it yet what a waste.
But it will “come in handy”...methinks....

How come we all have these magical boxes of things we have purchased or aquired over the years and never used or needed and the minute you chuck it away something breaks or goes wrong and you now you had a spare in the magic box oh and another thing her indoors has banned me from the middle of lidl far to many temptations

Mentioning hideously expensive things, with the Times on Saturday comes a magazine called Luxx. It not aimed at the likes of paupers like me. in it there is a gillet for £1250.00. There is also a watch for £176,000 as well.

Bought a Rapido A class in 2009 on a Mercedes , as self employed kept looking out the Lounge window thinking we were not using it much, sold it 2012, worst decision we have made , ordered. Auto-Sleeper on a Fiat this year About £20k + more than Rapido, you have to love motorhoming to own one as I reckon every 2 weeks away on holiday cost probably £1000 or Two in depreciation 😂
