moon pics please

Of course there is. When the main on is between us and the sun in an eclipse, the other side of it will be in full sun, so the dark side is the bit we see.
It's a lyric from a song called Eclipse by Pink Floyd it's spoken by Gerry O'Driscoll and the full line is "There is no dark side of the moon, really. As a matter of fact it's all dark" Gerry O'Driscoll was the doorman at Abbey road studios. The next line is "the only thing that makes it look light is the sun" Apparently the lyrics are about walking towards the light instead of the darkness.

meanders, interesting that you mention the "refractive effect" of our atmosphere as it was once pointed out to me ( although I can't remember the actual timings, might be a handful of seconds, or indeed a few minutes ?) that, as you watch the sun setting in the west, the sun has already "disappeared" from our view and it is only due to refraction bending the light, that we see it when we do.

I can't remember the timings either. Suffice to say that light does not travel in a dead straight line as previously beloved.

Ancient mariners from before Jonah's time have known the earth was round from the simple fact that, as you approach a land mass, or another vessel, the first thing you see are the tops of mountains/hills or the uppermost sails or top of a funnel, then, as you get nearer, you start to see the lower slopes or the wheelhouse/bridge etc.
If the earth was flat, you would see the object in it's entirety, just a lot smaller because it is off in the distance.
I worked with a lad who was convinced the earth was flat, his standard reply was "But that's what they want you to think" funnily enough, he could never tell me who "they"were though ?
Sorry for not responding, more of a night person with this, I'm not saying the earth is completely flat. That would be silly. There are peeks of mountains, hills and dips so obviously you will not see a distant land mark in it whole entirety. The only way to do that would be to look over a true flat plain. Hmmmm over water maybe as we all know that water finds its own level. People have been using this method in building for many a year. Water will not bend, water will not flow uphill? Now back to my point, Don't quote me on this as it has been a while but there is a place, I am thinking Manhattan that can be viewed in its whole scale from way back which would be impossible giving the Earths curvature. Plenty shots online and footage if you look.

Yes, but it doesn't mean it's dead flat, and I don't just mean ripples and the effect of surface tension. Earth's gravity is pulling it to make it horizontal to the Earth's core Not strictly true, but good enough for this discussion, so level at any particular point but over any distance the curvature will become measurable especially over the oceans. However, the Moon and to a lesser extent the other planets and the sun all pull it towards them causing our tides.

Humans were born to have opinions unless we are raised as sheep. Always question everything that has been taught from our school age and parents.
A system built to support the elite, and a form of control.
I never meant to offend anybody, if you want to be told then be told without research. Yes maybe research has fed you pictures and stories but are they true? (Covid vaccine for instance) I just thought it would be a good topic of conversation. We need to support and stand together in a very damaged world we live in today.
That's all peeps, have a good night.

That's all I wanted to know. Thank you
But remember those in the southern hemisphere see the Moon upside down compared to us in the northern hemisphere. This is most apparent between the Full and New Moon phases. In the early evening in the northern hemisphere the right side of the Moon will be bright, illuminated by the Sun. In the southern hemisphere the left side is the bright side. Near the equater it is the lower half which is brightest.

Good night. :giggle:

Yes, I remember this being on QI a few years ago. It’s more a few minutes than a few seconds.
When the bottom of the sun just appears to kiss the horizon, that is the point that it has actually ‘set’ and would be out of sight if it were not for the bending effect you mention.
