Modding the Hymer ML-t 580 4x4

MLT is now sending me abrupt messages ....

"You better turn off your Water Pump .... "

Buy a spare in any case.
We are on our fourth one.
(2018 MLT 570)

I'm looking at reconfiguring the pump system with an external Shurflo pump as the flow / pressure is pretty poor with the OEM set-up. Looks like it would about £120 - £150 in parts and a day of messing around getting it all to fit.

The Shurflo type set up in my previous Carthago was a massively superior water delivery system.

How much!
Cost me about £60 when I did it on my Hymer.

The Reich 19L/1.5bar pump is fine.
The first two went went through as our van was the demo model, and one thing everyone does is open the draws and check the taps.
Of course there would have been no water in the tank, so I guess the first two pumps were burnt out.
The third one lasted about 18 months

The current one I fitted in 2022, and it's still going fine.
I don't find any issues re pressure etc.

I always carry a spare pump!
I think I paid about £25 for the current spare in Austria a couple of years ago.
I see they are about £65 now in the UK !
(So it may be considerably cheaper to buy them on your next trip to the mainland)

Ahhhh,
But will it text you messages to say it's running hot ?

I'm wondering whether the interface between the water pump switch and the Hymer Connect can be fooled. The Hymer Connect panel has a touch screen on/off button for the pump.

Thinking, redirect the power supply to the existing pump to power a relay which would turn on /off the Surflo pump. That way I could turn the Surflo on and off using the Hymer touch screen and the iPhone app.

If that works .. then yes ... it would still send me a text based on "pump = powered on and tank water level = low".

Well that's the theory anyway ....

I had the same message a few weeks ago, pump wasn’t switched on, went in to check just in case, it wasn’t running or hot, tank had been drained though

An excellent day of modding ….

External Bullfinch Gas Socket, SOG and Maxxair Fan all fitted.

Probably the easiest mods so far….

I dropped it off to Phil at Rhino Installs in Bamber Bridge at about 11 am and picked it up just after 3pm.

There was no existing roof cut-out to drop the Maxxair Fan into and I’m too chicken to cut holes, so I just relaxed and let the professionals handle it.

RhinoInstalls - Great company to deal with. (y)

It’s a Hymer so it’s bound to have an intermittent annoying rattle from somewhere in the cab….

My best guess was a cable was knocking around loose in the over-cab area as the noise seemed to be coming from behind the speaker panel.

To access the void; firstly I popped the Mercedes overhead console out. This is a very simple operation, just slide a credit card in between the front edge of the console and the headlining, and it literally pops out.

Next I removed the speaker panel trim which is held in by 10 plastic push fittings. It’s a case of carefully working the panel off. Then remove the speakers.

The source of the rattle was immediately obvious.

Hymer have no concept of cable management, why use a 5p self adhesive fitting to stop a cable rattling when you can randomly bung a bit tape somewhere near the cables and just hope that works?

I’ve added some foam sound deadening to the rear of the speaker panel so there is no hard surface for the cables to rattle against, and a few cable clips.

While had access to the void I also added some insulation material.

What a fantastic thread. I am about to purchase a MLT Crossover.

I am not sure I will be taking mine apart quite yet.

Don't knock Hymer wiring, if maybe untidy but you can get at it.

Carthago on the other is all neatly cable tied in place in very unaccessible places under the floor. A nightmare when you are modding the van.

Inspired by LennyHB … I thought I’d start a post to details various mods and upgrades.

I have a brand new Hymer Mlt 580 sitting on my drive waiting for a DVLA to assign a registration number. In the meantime, of course I’m going to take take it apart, fettle and modify it …..

Firstly …. Hymer, why no front mudflaps? Genuine Mercedes parts are £75 a pair, could you not include them as standard?

Anyhow, an easy install as all the fitting points are present and line up perfectly.

Ten minutes per side and a great improvement both practically and visually. Should also save the habitation step mechanism from getting covered in mud.

Part Number: Mercedes-Benz Mud flaps Sprinter 907 front set A9078890600.

Great post! I’m definitely going to add mud flaps to ours.

Amplo Levellers fitted today ….

Thanks to the good people at TowTal in Stoke on Trent … they answered my many pre-sale questions, invited me over to see an install in progress and a gave full demo before I ordered the system.

As the AWD Hymer sits high they had to fit the extra long hydraulic rams. The central pump system sits centrally underneath the body but tucked up high and shielded by a metal cover. The main control panel is in the passenger seat base, but once powered on the handheld bluetooth remote handles most functions.

I dropped the van off on Thursday and picked in up the following day. On collection they put the van back on the ramps so I could inspect and photograph the install. They then talked me through all the components, wiring and pipe locations.

The van is now at home with the legs in parked up mode i.e. jacks down, just taking the weight off the suspension but not levelled out. I can pin code this option so that the jacks can’t be raised without entering the 4 digit passcode - handy bit of extra security.

Hopefully that’s the last of the expenditure …

How do they compare price wise to the competition, I know that E and P are just over £6000
