MOBY GOES TO TURKEY. A tam and pups adventure.

Photies o the day..

Still in the same place...it was heaving today though as the locals love a Sunday.. some right characters about though. ...there were 2 guys trying to do paragliding this morning but they didn't have much success sadly.

Your not a kick in the arse away from Kas now, one of my favourite wee spots in Turkey although not sure what it's like this early in the year but remember that wee spot I showed you out on the peninsula road plus on the way out of town on that same road there's a beautiful Roman amphitheatre with magnificent views from the top of it right over the whole area and the wee wild camping spot is not too far on out that same road

Aye I know 😉 I've had the heads up

Every other car here is either a fiat tofas dogan, the equivalent of the fiat regata in the UK or its a Renault 12. Its actually amazing just how many there are on the roads here. There's like a cult following of them . The Renault 12 was originally produced by the French from 1969 to 1980 ...I had a 1978 one myself around 1992 but in turkiye they were made right up to 2000.

Loads of garages restoring them , parts are easy and fairly cheap to come by.

In a way I think it's sad how we in the UK have allowed our government over the years to force people in to buying new cars all the time under the bs claim about the environment etc. Spain. Portugal, Greece, most of the balkans etc all seem to adopt the attitude of keeping hold of older cars and just maintaining them ...and personally I'm a great believer in that and think it is definitely more environmentally friendly to buy a car and keep it on the road for 40 years than it is to keep scrapping and remaking cars with increasingly more and more plastic parts

That said some of the turks may be a little ott going by articles like this one lol

Followed the link and read it, mint condition and only 10 grand?

But then scrolled on down.

45% interest rates and 65% inflation

We used to make visa runs out of Kas to the Greek Island offshore. Always an entertaining little trip! Kas was the one and only place I went to a Turkish barbershop for a haircut. Once the cutting was finished, the guy picked up a swab like a Q-tip only 10 inches long. He proceeded to dip it in some fluid, pulled out his lighter, fired up the swab and proceeded to burn the short hairs off the back of the neck. Though I will say he didn't burn anything but the hair, I decided it wasn't an experience I wanted to repeat. After that, Ann cut my hair for the next three years!

Well I attempted to remove a rear wheel this morning to change my rear brake pads and failed. It just broke my 12" extension bar as the nuts are ridiculously tight . The supplied wheel wrench is useless as always so I'm now in a small back street garage in yesilkoy. He doesn't speak english but hopefully translator and sign language has worked. Fortunately I have a set of brake pads with me .. I want him to change the brake fluid too . I'm hoping it's not too expensive . I could change the pads myself in under an hour if I could get the bloody wheels off.

The right side now has wheels off but looks fine... the right side however is grinding so I think the caliper is sticking. That's the same side I had problems with at mot time when they clamped the hose. So I'm hoping it just needs freed off and isn't a knackered caliper. Probably hasn't helped my hill climbs either.

We've done many trips to the Greek island of Kastellorizo (or Meis as it's called in Turkey), it's very pretty.
It's actually the island David Gilmour wrote about on his album 'On an Island'.

So was it the UK garage or the Greek one that over tightened the wheel nuts?

Both ... they always use these bloody impact guns . This guy did the same.

Bit of a cowboy mechanic really , an old man and a young lad about 15 . Old guy couldn't read I don't think so the young lad was doing the Google translate and typical youngster doesn't listen. So he has fitted the new rear pads , never saw any cleaning up or geasing slides etc happening and the caliper on the left side was obviously seized or at least sticking as the pads on that side was destroyed the other side had about 10mm on them , the disc is pretty badly scored but not getting in to replacing that just now as could be a nightmare. So he fitted the pads, I had a chance to clean all the oil and muck off the wheels from the bearing leak while he was doing that and he bled the rear brakes ... but despite me saying a few times to the young lad I wanted the fluid completely changed and the front bled too he just wasn't getting it. I did notice though that the translation wasn't fantastic so maybe down to that. It solved the immediate problem if sticking rear brake and pads grinding but I'll still need work done there later. The brakes are a bit better at the minute but I think I'll still find a garage to change the fluid and bleed the front. I'll also need to have front pads checked as I now don't have any spares.

Wasn't expensive 1200tl , which is a little over £30 and I'm back on the road for now. Didn't take card payments so had to pay cash .

Photies o the day ..

Left my lovely wee spot at the beach..

Went to the garage to get brakes looked at .. as mentioned earlier. Whilst it fixed the immediate problem of metal on metal I've a gut feeling that caliper piston is still sticking so I will still need it looked at as it will just wear the pads down on that side again fairly quickly. If I could get the bloody wheels off myself I'd just spend a few hours stripping that side down and cleaning and lubricating those caliper pistons and slides as I'm sure that's all it is. Think I need to invest in an impact gun for my tool kit. .. disc has taken a beating but still serviceable at present

I then went to kalkan, not many stops available there and the best of the bunch wasn't great so I had lunch and walked the dogs then we headed off again.

We drove on to kas, parked up on the roadside spot just next to the old amphitheatre... yo be honest I'm feeling a bit amphitheatre overload.. there's practically one in every town in Turkey... gets a bit sameish but hey ho here's a few pics anyway

Then we had a wee walk in to town , its a typical tourist seaside town , pretty in its own right and if you're in to restaurants and bars I can see the appeal but it will be a one night location for me I'm afraid. Lots of strays in the town ,quite a few were a bit confrontational and not the friendliest, few locals stepped in a few times and steered them away from us as teeth were bared and growling starting. I think the ones in towns are quite territorial.

... German, not friendly .... been a severe lack of friendly travellers on this trip ...I'm about at the stage now where I just stop saying hi/hello etc as frankly I'm tired of being blanked completely or having a one word response etc.. I have to say it does make or break a trip and I'm feeling it this time .

Not sure if it's the single male thing , or maybe the dogs ,or it could even be political and folk just are not liking brits at the minute who knows.. but its not my imagination people are just getting less and less sociable it seems. I look back at 2020 when travelling Greece during covid etc and folk were much friendlier, 2nd year in Greece was a bit less but still. Last year in Spain not so much , but met up with the 2 couples in Morocco etc.. this year has been a failure from the start it seems. It really does seem like each nationality is sticking to their own , the Germans all together, the French and the Belgians...... and there are very very few brits in Turkey in vans it would seem.

Anyway the weather is good that's at least something.

Tam keep your eye on that rear caliper that was sticking as it could be that the flexible hose has collapsed internally and not releasing the pressure.
Had that on my car last month

Aye that's what was the original issue back when it was motd last year. The garage while changing the wheel bearing had clamped the flexi hose and damaged it .. so the brakes were jamming on . They then fitted a new flex and it seemed to be fine after that.

In Greece last month I experienced brake. Fade while descending a mountain pass and assumed I'd boiled the fluid. I put off getting it looked at till I got to Turkey thinking I'd get the fluid changed here and a few other jobs done.

Only really noticed a bit grinding while braking a few days back ... but its hard to hear anything from the back of this van while driving so it might have been sticking longer. I'll probably find a garage around antalya that speaks english and will get the full brake system bled and I'll get the wheels off and check that side plus the front brakes again.

You're confident in striping the brakes so why not get a meter long breaker bar and fetch the wheels off.
Only need to pay for a fluid change then.
I have 2 x metre long breaker bars with me. But to get the rear wheel nuts off you need to put a 12" extension piece between socket and the breaker bar and when I did that this morning it snapped the end of my extension.. and it wasn't a cheap one either. Wheel nut never budged. Front wheels are a little easier as no need for an extension bar.

Wish I'd invested in a cordless impact gun before leaving UK as that would be the best option I think .
