Mercedes vario 814 self build bus to FLT palace

Perhaps you can explain why one needs to pass another test to drive a manual if one only has a automatic licence but not the other way round?
To me it suggests a greater degree of skill, ability is required to drive the manual. It would also appear the DVSA agree.
Yeah you are super skilled, you can operate a clutch, very few people can😆, you are missing the point entirely, unless you have a medical condition, most people can get to grips with a gear-lever and clutch within no time at all, it’s just that modern auto boxes are so comfortable in what is today’s ever more congested traffic that when you have experienced a modern car with a sophisticated auto box, you would never go back to a manual gear change, but luckily for the fans, you can still buy them, choice is good, lots of super cars these days are only available with automatic transmission though……

No need to change them when still working fine. But they are good quality bits and a wee spray of wd40 every so often helps 😁
That's right. If you don't overheat them they'll go for ever. Most people run the drill too fast which doesn't cut well and knackers the bits.

I have both and enjoy both.

Think an auto suits a big car or MH better tbh.

And every performance car worthy of the description?
TVR, lotus, xkr, F40, all manual!!!

Ok most new ones are but many older ones were Manual.

Cheers James

DSG suits our Smart - and any other car really.
Loved my dsg box in my passat cc ...any big mercs , bmw etc ive had most have been auto's...
Not so keen on a heavy motorhome being auto though especially with some of the big hill climbs. But then ive not had a fairly new motorhome so they might be a bit better powerwise.

Yep the new generation of power trains is great, you can hardly feel the gear changes and they are instant, and very good in recognition of a hill, so it adjusts its behaviour accordingly. On another note, are you thinking of Greece again this winter or are you set to go to turkey via Greece ? Interested in what you would make of Turkey in winter.😁

Mine is a 5 (I think!) speed auto on 3L Merc. Later versions of the 'box are 7 speed but even with mine it's not necessary to second guess it for hill climbing. I've had everything from 4 speed +OD manual through 3 speed Borg-Warner, robotic manual, and DSG. DSG is brilliant and works with any engine size / power. Torque converter auto probably still better with larger engines / vehicles although with lock-up in the higher gears there is little torque converter loss.

Not for LGV's these days, full licence granted if test taken in automatic truck but with manual car licence.
So what you’re saying is one must have a manual licence then? I did know this rule but one still needs to prove competence in a manual. Therefore DVSA do realise driving a manual requires greater skill than just an auto.

it’s as is mentioned on here now and again, the dumbing down of people. Cars need to be made easier to operate as many cannot drive very well any more.

Yes I'd agree there is far more coordination required driving a manual,+ the ability to do it without even thinking about it whilst concentrating on traffic.

these days if given a choice I¡d have a proper auto ,not an electronic manual.

I don't know about the car licence but it is similar here. All tests for lorries are autos & you can drive either when you pass.
OMG does your mum know you've borrowed her Dyson?😱
It was either that or the pillar drill on the kitchen table:giggle:

have you driven a dsg auto they are fabulous and can be driven maually just no clutch mine is paddles or stick in manual

that 3mm bit is obviously a world champion
I bought a pack of ten but they have some ***tip on them thats very hard wearing...it still goes through like a hot knife in butter...the 7.5mm admittedly is starting to take a bit longer ...i might have to sharpen it 😁

Was it black and decker that did a pillar drill you clamped your drill into? I seem to remember it had to be a B&D drill though  :rofl:

You need a van to put all the stuff in you need for your van 🥴

There is a slight difference between driving a car with 4 gears to a truck with a minimum of 8 gears, DVSA have decided in their wisdom that the need to manipulate a more complicated gearbox is no longer necessary now that most tractor units are now offered with auto boxes as standard.

Haven't heard anything about the caravan lately, how's caravan life Tam?
Mediocre ...making a bed up each night is a pain but otherwise its ok ..it will do for now but its 90% likely ill be heading to warmer climes start of November...just deciding what van to buy. An older 90's hymer or a panel van type autosleeper type thing.

Plenty around for £10k and under at present but not wasting time viewing till ive got all these windows plated up and the bus watertight ...then ill venture south on a viewing frenzy lol .

Come back end of january ready to get stuck back in .

Caravan will make nice storage here over winter lol

Tam can you not take the cupboard out under the front window and make a transverse bed and leave some seating?
