Mercedes vario 814 self build bus to FLT palace

The flue for the woodburner is going through the roof ...the other hole is now welded up. Still not decided what water heater im fitting. Only use it for a shower nothing else. Still thinking of different options including heating a tank from the engine coolant circulation.
Would a 'portable' shower do where you heat the water on your hob, put it in a container and use that?

I thought about heating from the log burner for a shower too but you will not have the burner on all the time….
If your going to have plenty of solar then some sort of electrical heating of the water may be enough to warm a 5-8ltrs tank just for the shower..?
I know it’s not usually effective to heat water from power but there will be times when you’ll have plenty of sun and excess power, 35-40c is warm enough if your in a warm climate and that wouldn’t take much power…🤔

In summer that would be ok but winter time is my concern

Double up on heated water, small electric water heater ( boiler ) and something run on diesel, the older you get , the more you appreciate hot water lol

I think a "FLT Palace" requires on demand hot water without having to run the engine or fire up the wood burner!!

The on demand water heaters that have a square hole the size of a cassette door are a bit unsightly, but the Truma ones with just a 4 or 5 inch round vent aren't too bad.

Big thanks to monzer who's just delivered my big stash of steel cut to size and folded etc ....big help and much appreciated

Use it inside silly boy in your shower cubicle not outside  ... don't want to scare the neighbours do you!

Eyup Tam, where are you with the welding? I’ve not read back on this thread for a day or two.

Well monday night in march might be possible eh

But not being one to let grass grow under my feet i pressed on with fettling the rear panel ...got it looking half decent then drilled all me holes for the puddle welds ...then got that bit welded in place ..

Its looking no three bad and helps to start getting some shape back in there ... unfortunately weather is meant to be crap here the next few days so i might well not be near it again till next week

Unless my tent holds up

Is that for closing up the windows?
Aye the window panels and the bits for the rear valance and around the tailgate etc.

Basically i should now have all the metal and panels to finish off the bodywork

Its just weather and time now . But id like to have all the welding done by the end of this month hopefully.

Are you welding up the bike rack too? Could that slide into the protruding 2 pieces or is that not heavy enough ?

I bought a tent once from Dancover, they got a excellent selection of very heavy duty stuff in a great variety of sizes, not cheap but good investment , gets the work done! I sold it after 3 years of use for half the price I bought it for .😇🤷🏻‍♂️

Wickes do a green reinforced tarp which is pretty tough.

Cheers James

Very nice. Any pics of that? What sort of weight have you designed it for, little alloy ramp from the side for loading? Will be so good to have a scooter or bike!😀
Few pics of it .... not completely finished but you get the idea

Looking good, looks a good fit when the tailgate is down (y)

It's going to look crazy when you've sheeted the windows.
Yeah somehow you got that drop the perfect size on it ...comes down nice either side of the sockets. Nice and sturdy too so it was a good move going for the 1.5mm .

I cant wait to see how it looks without the windows...will really start to take shape then.

monzer certainly knows how to work a bit of sheet metal
Aye i would have struggled to get this bit shaped so it was very handy to have him bend these bits for me ...should be able to get a good finish on this area now

Scary when you think about all those other self builds out there done on old vans. Not many will have taken the trouble to get all the rot out like Tam has.
