Mercedes vario 814 self build bus to FLT palace

Yes ...still some rot to cut out but its nice to see some new metal going in and taking shape again.
Are you keeping a running total of costs?

I've had a couple of days costing out a Ducato or similar conversion, I've had to stop for a day or two to see if the sweats and feeling bilious stop...

Can you/anyone educate me, in a line or two, as to what a cill/sill is or does?
I've heard about cars having rotten sills, and your bus had rusty ones, but still passed it's mot and was [sort] of driveable.
So what are their purpose?
On a car the sills are part of the unit monocoque construction & removal or failure due to rusting means the structure is compromised & unsafe. On Tam's bus the sills are basically decorative as it has an independent chassis.

On most cars they are structural ... on these they are purely cosmetic ....but look crap when rotten

Not a bad investment really, in for forty seven hundred quid for a bus worth £1500 now🤣
As it stands just now its probably worth more in parts than id get if i tried to sell it 😁 and now they all appear on eBay

Up bright and early as its MOT day for toby today ....i think he might fail on a wheel bearing and exhaust rubbers as i forgot to change them 🤦‍♂️ but we will see

9am mot what sadist thinks that up.

Good luck Tam. Hopefully it won’t be too costly. What will you do once Toby has new MOT - sell it?

I had many of these when i were a lad .....all in considerably better condition than this one ... every panel is rotten ... I think its even worse than the vario

Im surprised to be honest as he needs new exhaust rubbers ...i just forgot to get them as ive been preoccupied with the vario. Ordered them now though. I cant see any leak from radiator or anywhere else though and neither the radiator or bottle is low on coolant. I think its been condensation from the aircon he's seen as i had that on driving through because windscreen was misted up

We have a local garage we take all our vehicles to, for mot , 9 times out of ten he will say something is leaking.
Doesn't fail but most times we can't see anything.

Yeah its the same guy i use for my motorhome mot too ....he never gets a y repair work from me as i do it myself but they are weird with advisories. Last year they advised a noisy wheelbearing which i couldn't find ....i had however just replaced front brakes , struts etc and painted all the calipers etc so it was still a little sticky ....no mention of it this time.

All the exhaust rubbers are cracked which i noticed in greece and intended to replace those before test but forgot ....he never mentioned those.

I think they just like to put something on the certificate in case folk think theyve not checked it

Having had a little think about it i might stick an add up on here for Toby at present and see what interest there is. If sold I can pick up a caravan to live in here while i finish the vario as I don't know how often id get away with toby anyway. Given the work ive done to it and the miles ive done relatively trouble free should be a testament to its condition.

Theres one 654 the same age as mine on ebay at present for 30k without the extras mine has so i dont think £26.5k would be an unreasonable amount to ask for mine considering.
