Mercedes vario 814 self build bus to FLT palace

The ones trying to tell you how you should do it have probably never built a camper van in their lives.
Well I have done one and am more than willing to help Tam do his design as/when he wants me to, I doubt I'll get the chance to do another myself so helping him is enjoyable for me.

I have to say that the posts by a small number of funsters on this thread which IMV were totally unnecessary and disruptive for the sake of it have been very enlightening about how they believe they should act, not a way that I would want to be viewed.

Tam, why not start another thread with just brief details of what you've done to date and continue on that then 'lose' this one (or put a link to it with a warning) so those of us who want to support you can do so without the mischief makers.

Sorry guys for losing patience ....@jim is now saying that the ignore function stops the person from viewing or commenting on the thread which must be a new feature as it didn't do that before.....but if it does then fair enough.

I certainly can no longer see any of the comments so im guessing jim has put him on ignore for me as I didn't.

Anyway im well aware that im rapidly becoming a grumpy old git but i just can't see the point in folk following a thread if it doesn't interest them or going out their way to purposely derail it or just wind folk up for a reaction.

Ill update it when theres something to post 👍
You are not being a grumpy old git. I'd be peed off as well.

Just remind yourself that anyone who is having such a great time in Greece that they want to sit inside annoying you, isn't having a good time in Greece at all.

Good to see you back

At least starting with a bus you don’t have what for me was the scariest part of my first build. Cutting out the side panels for the windows. All done back in 1979/ 80 with a cengar saw and masking tape. Nice to see you have reconsidered and will continue to update your build👍🏻👍🏻.

To be honest im not sure what's worse cutting holes to make windows or removing windows and plating up the holes ....ill let you know once that stage is done ..... Think i may be getting a professional to do that. The rear pods will be a bit of a challenge too

Be worth getting a glass expert to remove the windows. If they are bonded then don't they use a special air cutter to get them out. I know it's a cinch for them as they seem to get car windows out in about 2mins.

So glad this is back on; have been really enjoying following the progress.

I couldn’t believe what I was seeing from posters (some of whom should know better).

Thanks for picking it back up again.

These are just in on rubbers so i think one good push in a corner and they would be out. Once again the front 6 done by mercedes are rust free around them ...the rear 2 done by kvc conversion theres lots of bubbling and rust. Fortunately im going to be cutting out that area to put pods in anyway.

Does this mean nobody can see the detractors on this thread, or just Tam?
Please say nobody😄👍
Im hoping it means they cant actually access the thread as thats what happens elsewhere when you block someone.

Im of the opinion that if you just cause problems on a thread then you shouldn't be able to see it or enjoy the content of it. Something the old ignore option didnt do. Ive had folk following my previous travel threads that ive had on ignore for years.

Understood. Worth a try then definitely. If they are tight you are not worried about breaking them. You could still consider a mobile fitter though. I don't think they would charge much and they are just as good with the rubber fit ones as the bonded ones. All out in an hour or so.

Yes well the plan at the minute when i get to that stage is to remove one , plate it up so its waterproof etc then do another and another ...thats the plan anyway . The first one will probably be the rear screen ...which to be honest im surprised hasn't fell out on its own as lots of rust round that one 🤣

One of the things that will make the van look different from most varios as the panel vans have moulded side panels where my windows currently are ...but this will be flat sheets for a smoother look

Pods will be done like this .....but just flat

Only mine wont need to be tapered like this because nowhere near the side door ....these ones are on a shorter van

Please excuse my ignorance Tam but what's a "pod"?

Yeah as lenny says its extending the side panels slightly i think the hymer grand canyon has them . You can buy fibreglass ones for the sprinter etc but ill have to make mine

Small extension area to give the bed more head & foot room, often seen on narrow PVC's like Sprinters, Hymer have some models with them.
I suppose it's a piece of string question - but how many inches width is likely to be gained from a 'flush fitting' pod?

Phew! thank goodness you have stayed with us Tam. Just hope the annoying pillock stops posting on here.
Don't know what got in to him to be honest ...i thought he was alright generally and id have met up with him in greece when i was there for a bleather. But for some reason he's turned in to an arse since i asked him to keep the brexit stuff off the thread .... Maybe alcohol induced who knows 🤷🏻‍♂️

Its not flush ....it sticks out about 60mm either side ...so a six inch gain roughly

Im 6ft 3 and the vario is about 5 foot 11 wide i think

For those not sure of the pod idea ...this is the ones available for the merc sprinter. ...a sprinter really needs them as they are narrower ...most folk dont need them on a vario ..but im quite tall and as im removing windows to plate them anyway i may as well add a bit extra

an extension or "bubble " on the side of the van like this, if I didnt have one I would have to sleep with my feet out the window :ROFLMAO: View attachment 497296
Cool. Kills 2 birds with one stone and looks very neat and tidy.
