Mercedes vario 814 self build bus to FLT palace

£2k of lithium going in there i think
You don't want lithiums...
Nah, you want AGMs Tam ... Lenny HB loves them!

This ones £5 cheaper and looks nicer to me!!

Cheers James
Yup I spotted that one too after the one I posted which came up first when I did a search for round sinks, it was just a suggestion of they 'type' ie round, not a specific one ... I'm sure if he looks at Ebay, Toolstation etc he might find one that suits him ... anyway I've still got the butler sink in the garden if he wants it ... despite the name though he won't get a butler with it to do his washing up nor wash out his smalls! 😁

Protest, protest! , on the couple of occasions I've seen Tam's van it was immaculate! He is either very well trained, with an eye to the resale value or just naturally house-proud.
... or you need to go to Specsavers! 😁

More destruction .... and more rust ... think its finally under 3.5t now lol

With the sloping steels at the back, looks like its destined to be a race truck

Bus is parked behind a unit on the A68 on the northern end of Jedburgh, Scottish Borders

Tam,what will you put on the bits of metal you’ve rubbed down, before painting? Apologies if already covered before. Asking because so many people just apply paint, thinking there is no rust......but it’s there, lurking!

Will all be treated with kurust then painted with rust encapsulator , then red oxide and hammerite over the top .... and the underside will be stone chipped over that . Waxoyl pumped in to the sills etc

Blimey, should last more than a few years then....probably better than new!

God !.....yes I know I said I wouldn’t intrude on Northernraider ’s thread again...BUT...as it’s the son of Finding Zorba and just to annoy Mr Miserable aka 15edward I’d post a couple of pics of sunny Greece to cheer up those who are not interested in rusty crossmembers 😊 ....27 degrees, blue skies and endless swimming for the foreseeable future !

If not interested in rusty crossmembers and van builds in general ...they probably shouldn't be following this thread to be honest 🤷🏻‍♂️

Greece will still be there when its finished ..but you could always start your own travel thread.

Having started my working life as a panel basher and building my first camper on a transit in 1980 I am very interested in rusty cross members. Keep it coming Tam.
I did get questioned on whether I had built a camper a few days ago. However the questioner wasn’t worth answering.
Your build thread is taking me back to those days. I spent two whole weeks just welding. Looks like you’ve taken on a similar amount.

Aye theres more than i thought there would be to be honest. Never intended on doing a restoration .....but too far gone now to back out . Fortunately it can all be fixed and once done should be good for another 15 years hopefully.

Take your time and slowly it will get done. You’re going to look back on this in forty years and all of it will have been fun. I didn’t enjoy it at the time but would do it all again in a heartbeat.
Luckily for us young lads I was a panel basher, my brother a mechanic, one a joiner and the fourth a wizz at the paperwork. We had a great time, selling ice cream on the nudist beach at St Tropez, picking grapes, digging a swimming pool, working on a yacht that belonged to an Arab guy that owned half of Jeddah.
You’re not building a van you’re building memories.

HaHa ...I did think about it but I’m too lazy....looking forward to your next travel thread though. I’m off back to Blighty in about a month...can’t decide whether to do a long trip...Albania, Monte Negro, Bosnia Herzegovina, Hungary etc or just Italy France or even Bulgaria, Romania...Pity you didn’t go back via that route and I could have found out how much of a pain all the PCR testing would have been.

A bit harsh tam 🥺
I dont think its harsh...folk on here asked me to create this build thread so i did....i just think if it gets sidetracked with a load of other stuff then its harder to follow , folk get fed up with it etc ...and for me its then harder to read back for any usefull input.

Rust
Having been in the body repair business for over 40 years, rust was one thing you did not want to recur.
The first coat of paint is the most crucial. A 2 part etching primer was always used, sprayed or brushed, after a chemical wash of Jenolite or similar. An alternative would be a zinc rich paint such as by Bilt Hamber followed by chassis black paint for a heavy wear area. Red Oxide is not what it used to be ie Red Lead. A 1 gallon tin was an arm wrestler!

Bilt Hamber also do top quality rust proofing products (I have no connection, just a satisfied customer).

While on the rust theme, a small drill bit in a drill operated at 45 degrees can remove pitted rust. Might take a while but it works well.

Good luck with the rebuild.
Rob
