Medical at Age 70

I don’t agree. I don’t think folks deliberately overload their vans either.
I think there are many dealers and manufacturers deliberately ignoring the issue. I fear that there are also more than a few owners who whilst not actually deliberately overloading are aware their vans are marginal and choose not to to check and carry on regardless.

As I said earlier it would suit me well if the weight limit was increased. However if manufacturers just add more space and lots of tempting goodies we will have the same problem but at a higher weight.

My suggestion would be that an increase should be accompanied by a new minimum actual payload for vehicles based on the vehicle weight at handover. Meaning that dealers are not allowed to hand a motorhome over if there is less than say 500kg real payload based on the vehicle weight that day.

I am 76 this year and holder of what you would know as a HGV 1, that is I'm qualified to drive a 44 Ton Articulated Lorry and proud of it therefore I have to have a medical every year which is no big deal. It takes about 15 to 20 mins and very straight forward unless you have any underlying health problems. I'm also a Private Pilot / Instructor and have a medical again every 12 months or less if the examiner says I need it. When that happens I will give up flying.
Don't worry about it go for it as it is nice to know that you are A OK.

I have just got my licence Back. I am 75 so still trying to hold on to my HGV1 . I took my medical with Drs on wheels . He was more through than my own Dr .Took about 20 mins. I sent it in March about the 20th. It came back yesterday. I am ok for another year. So watch out. I will be about.

You should get your renewal application for your licence at 70 about 2-3 months before your 70th birthday, if you've no medical issues then no problem, I am on various medications e.g. Morphine, Amitriptyline, Aspirin, Ibuprofen. Your application with your medical history, details of medication etc, goes before a panel of DVLA medical "experts" and you will have to wait as I did for however long they take, 10 weeks in my case, however, you can continue to drive up until they notify you of their decision, no problem as long as your not abroad when they notify you of their decision, as your licence may be limited to 3.5ton with immediate affect and then you will have to go thru the appeals process, with letters from your consultants etc.but if you've got no medical issues and pass the medical & eyesight test fine you'll usually have your licence back in 2-3 weeks maybe sooner, be sure to return application form straight away with your medical/eyesight test result. Better having a medical with D4 Drivers or Drivers on wheels, both around £52 last year, anything from £100 upwards with your own GP.hope this helps.
I Still didn’t get application forms or a reminder 3 months before 70, I am now 2 months and 8 days to 70,
DVLA not excepting Doctored on Wheels.

They accept all the other ones though we used D4Drivers £55 including eye test. Wife just receiver her license back waiting for mine.

3 Years ago when we bought this van took the view if we fail our medicals at 70 a good excuse for a new van, disappointed we both passed so she won't let me buy a new van..
How long it took, from sending D2 & D4 to the DVLA to getting the new licence?

Wife sent hers in on 24th March, licence arrived Monday. Posted mine on 4th May still waiting. But they only started processing non key worker applications last week.

Advice Please.
Planing to go to Spain/France for about a month and will need my driving license to drive there, need to apply to retain the C1 on my licence which will expire 23/08. Can I send the D2 & D4 to the DVLA without adding my existing license? With hope that my new licence will arrive before 23/08.
(When I changed address, didn’t send the old licence and the DVLA asked to destroy it when the new arrive.)
Thanks in advance.

Thank you

I don't think they will process it without the old license. You could say you lost it then it might go through OK.
As you are not going for over two months I would expect them to be back to normal long before then.

I do not believe it matters as long as you sent it in you can still drive, ie you don't actually need your licence with you.. On the Gov web site you can actually see your Driving licence details. often for speed when you hire a car you just need to look up your licence and provide a reference.

OK to drive in UK without having the driving licence, I don’t think I can drive in Europe without the UK licence.
Planing to go early July and back before mid August, licence will expire 23/08.

Due to not being able to get a medical for C1 Lic i sent my car lic in to renew on the 12/05 and heard nothing so i contacted dvla as a critical worker to ask if could still drive the answer was it expired on the 05/06 so you cannot drive. i eventually had a medical on 20/06 so have sent the D4/D2 forms in on Monday, the dvla said they could not give a timeframe for the Lic to be issued so will give it a while and have a go at them again, at least they have answered my emails promptly so far. Can you please tell me how did you managed to contact the DVLA and to get a reply?
I tried to call them few times but still no one to talk wIt’s.

It would appear you have to be a critical worker to get an answer, i can do part time work at a charity DONT you. Bill

Thanks Bill, I can be too.
Which Email address did you use to contact them?

I went on the dvla web site and you go through several pages you select what applies to you till you get to what you want, best i can do. Bill

I can only say I got my licence back after 3 months. And I used Drs on wheels. And I have a class one. So good luck to you all. Sorry but I got mine.

But no use abroad. You actually need to be in possession of the physical in date licence.

But if it is registered with the DVLA web site you can log on and it gives you the details which are, I believe, accepted ie legal. Ditto if you wanted to hire a car whilst abroad just log on and they issue a code based on your licence details. This is the norm now when booking car hires.

Slight problem in the current situation my licence comes up as expired. Although legal to drive in the UK I don't think a foreign cop will think much of you showing him your licence has expired.

Taken from an Answer on the DVLA website.:-

If your entitlement has expired, you can drive as soon as the DVLA receives your correct and complete application for a new licence as long as you meet the Section 88 criteria. You must only drive vehicles you have applied for on your current application and were entitled to drive on your previous licence.

What that means for me. Is that I could drive C1. But If I wanted my LGV (class one) which I let go at 66ys. I would have to wait until It was validated.

For the last few years now. Many countries have a reciprocal agreement to be able to access the DVLA licence database. as our Police have theirs I am told.. I Know that if I give a Password ( a one shot code) to a hire company anywhere in the world they can check my licence details. But having hired in the USA, they just take a brief look at my UK licence, shrug and sign me up. I did use my Texas Licence on one occasion.

A reciprocal arrangement to access each other’s databases is fine but if it shows your license as expired it is not going to do you any good. A UK Officer might be aware of this arrangement but I doubt that abroad it would help you in the slightest.

mine is up for C1 renewal in October but leaving UK in early September so i am hoping to get it sorted before then. problem i have is i cannot apply until 90 days before so i have to wait 2 more weeks

i dont fancy my chances with a local Gendarme on the way south if stopped.

Personal opinion in my case and I suspect from others as well.

Having just contacted Doctors On Wheels, they are now fully compliant with DVLA 'rules', but due to the Virus are only doing medicals in a limited area.
