Medical at Age 70

DVLA is doing a looking a lot closer at the medicals every since the bin lorry driver incident in Glasgow a few years ago.

The D4 and medical issues can be overcome but the D2 is not available for down loading and the DVLA are not sending them out. You can only claim the “rule 88” if you have submitted an application and you can’t submit an application without the D2 form.

Does anyone have a copy of the D2 and could they possibly scan it and make it available for others to download? This would only help if it does not have a unique serial number on it.
You can get the D2 Form from the post office together with D4

I have a D4 Medical on the 20/6 with D4drivers in York £55.00, they are doing both sections eyes and medical do you think there is a good chance i will get the form back. Bill

This is coming up next year in August for my OH. I know nothing about it, can anyone help please. I'm interested to know how long the result takes to come through and can you carry on driving, whilst you wait? We're thinking about being away, as you do when you have a motorhome, so do you have to hang around waiting for the result? Thanks in advance.
You should get your renewal application for your licence at 70 about 2-3 months before your 70th birthday, if you've no medical issues then no problem, I am on various medications e.g. Morphine, Amitriptyline, Aspirin, Ibuprofen. Your application with your medical history, details of medication etc, goes before a panel of DVLA medical "experts" and you will have to wait as I did for however long they take, 10 weeks in my case, however, you can continue to drive up until they notify you of their decision, no problem as long as your not abroad when they notify you of their decision, as your licence may be limited to 3.5ton with immediate affect and then you will have to go thru the appeals process, with letters from your consultants etc.but if you've got no medical issues and pass the medical & eyesight test fine you'll usually have your licence back in 2-3 weeks maybe sooner, be sure to return application form straight away with your medical/eyesight test result. Better having a medical with D4 Drivers or Drivers on wheels, both around £52 last year, anything from £100 upwards with your own GP.hope this helps.

Hi Bill. Usually they fill out the form in front of you and sign it there and then and hand it to you. I think they also give you a copy of the D2 form for you to fill out. At least that is what happened when I used one of these firms of travelling doctors. You can then send it to the DVLA and can then rely upon S88 to continue driving until they either send you a new licence with the C1 or say they are not going to.

I thought they only automatically sent out the D1 form for standard licenses not the D2 needed for a C1 renewal.

It’s a shame dr on wheels are no longer. They was quick and cheap, all you need really.

You are sent a D46P form automatically to renew standard licence or do it online at 70, C1 licence are from dvla or post offices, D4 you can download, D2 you cant. Bill

Not all Post Offices seem to stock the D2 form, I suspect it has to be a Main PO rather than a Sub PO.

We’ve talked endlessly about what to do. OH has a couple of mild conditions, which are mentioned on the questionnaire. He hates the idea of being messed about for weeks on end, so we are looking at down sizing just to have peace of mind.
Sorry to hear that. I would be incandescent if it happened to me. The difference between your average 3.5t and a 4t, are so microscopic as to be a mockery of of just system!. Hence the reason why so many can be uprated with just paper exercise!.

Carthago 138 looks nice.

Happy viewing then miss Sponge. You’ll love it I’m sure. I have this licence problem coming up in 18 months or less!!

Sorry if somebody has already posted this but you don't need to renew at the moment because the DVLA have granted 7 month automatic extensions.

What`s the Payload?. And before purchase ask for a Weighbridge ticket? you might find you will struggle to keep under 3.5t.
I am running the heavier 143 Compactline at less than 3.5t. I have to be careful and have little to spareI. I opted for no drop down bed, 40kg saved. Alloy wheels, 8kg saved. I have a LiFePO4 leisure battery and 1x14kg Alugas refillable. When on the move I carry very few heavy items in the garage to keep the weight off the rear axle. Fortunately the Carthago has lots of underfloor storage so it is easy to spread the weight between the two axles.

I will probably uprate it to 3.85t if I manage to keep my C1.

I have read about the 7 month extension, looks like it dose not apply to anyone renewing at the age of 70, i stand ready to be corrected. Bill

Just picked up the D2 and D4 for the Post Office. I wasn't able to phone them individually as it's all going through a central number now and is useless for what I wanted to know, but having searched on those doing driving licence checks, international driving livences etc I took a trip to the nearest that came up - 12 miles away - and they had the forms I wanted. Medical booked with D4 Drivers on Sunday so I'm all set to send it off well before due date in August and will rely on the recorded delivery receipt Section 88 to keep driving the MoHo.

I did request D2/D4 through DVLA website but they've sent a D42 and medical questionaire (can't find any reference to it on DVLA website??) because my 'condition' isn't covered in their online service. That all seems a bit strange as they aren't dealing with postal applications?? I think I'll just ignore that one altogether and send the D2/D4 so as not to confuse things. I'll send it straight after I get the medical done and hope I don't loose too much time out of the next licence. OH, who has no health to 'declare', lost 3 months off her first C1 renewal as we decided to get it in in good time - we could believe it when the licence came back by return of post starting 3 months before her 70th birthday.

I too am approaching 70 and intend to keep my C1 license so I have the option to drive over 3,500kg. I believe that once you have submitted a valid application on form D2 accompanied by the D4 medical form you are allowed to continue driving provided that your doctor agrees that you are safe. The procedure for keeping the general categories appears to be more straight forward and only involves a medical questionnaire, which you self certify.
No must be certified by doctor

International driving license is a rip off,got one last year, license runs out October this year, 70 in may next years So 3 international driving licences in 2 1/2 years

I used Drs on Wheels shorty before banned by DVLA. The lady inside transit van had never heard of my heart condition. I said “Aren’t you a Doctor”?
No, she replied, “but it’s OK as I have a stamp” and with that, she got out her ink pad and stamp and there was the Doctors name and signature.
There was a queue of HGV drivers waiting as it was on the Avonmouth Industrial Estate.
It was not before time that they were banned.

Gosh, thank goodness they were banned.

It’s pure economics, that’s why there was a queue of hgv drivers. If it had anything to do with safety it would be free.

I disagree. I'm a retired nurse. When I was practising I had to pay a registration fee to the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Their purpose is to keep the general public safe. Many things that keep us safe aren't free. I'm afraid your logic is flawed.

Cowboys masquerading as doctors deserve to be banned.
