Majestic 196....Y/N

Just get the checks done and then enjoy the adventure ! Sometimes you can over think the cooking of that there omelette!
I bought the very first incarnation of Bailey’s motorhome with all the dangers fraught with that and it was the best motorhoming decision we ever made .

We’ve not used the shower yet as we don’t trust the allegedly waterproof wallpaper. I’m going to try and add some wallboarding. I’ve sealed round the edges of the sink shelf and mouldings as once water seeps into the gaps it will never dry out and rot starts. I’m probably being over cautious. Just one of the things that wasn’t quite finished.

5 1/2 years ago we bought a used Elddis 175 because it had the layout we wanted at a price we could afford.
We knew we were not buying a top quality made motorhome, but we certainly feel that we got value for money.
5 1/2 years on, do we still feel the same, yes, it has been all we hoped for and more.
The only things that have packed up in that time was a relay unit, but that was Italian electronics rather than Elddis and a return spring in the bathroom door handle broke.
The mounting bracket that the Thule electric step is bolted on to developed a crack but that was an easy fix.
It's still as dry as a bone, even though I have put a few holes through the roof and floor for various bits and bobs I have fitted.

Nice to know my friend...but it's the toilet/shower/wet room that's the sticking point. It's supposed to have "special" water proof wall cover and when you close the door the door becomes one of the shower walls ..but Wannabee says he has a 2020 van with the same set up but doesn't use the shower for sake leaks...if you seen the set up in the flesh u would understand his thinking!

Having had a wet room in our previous two MH's the big selling point for us with our 175 is the across the back bathroom with its separate full-size shower cubicle and loo that does not get wet when you shower.

Our previous van had a vinyl type wall covering in the wet room and caused it no problems as wherever it met with another surface or fitting it was silicone sealed so all the water would drain off to the shower tray.
It did have a shower curtain that covered the door area as the van builder saw that as the easy way to watertight the door.

If my concerns were so bad about the shower possibly leaking and therefore not wanting to use the shower, then I personally would not buy the van in the first place.

We had a similar door and "waterproof wallpaper" in an Autoquest 155.
We only used the shower a few times every year as we normally stay on sites, but we never had any problems with it.
Just wipe it down after every use.

I have a 196, it is our first motorhome and we got it last year. Previous owner didn't register the warranty so we took a risk. So far so good, had a leak through the rear heiki roof light at the beginning of this year, but I don't think that's the fault of Elddis.

We are both in our mid thirties with an 18 month old, and two small dogs (bichons), so layout was really something I focused on when I was looking around. I'm pretty happy with this choice we made. It's great for day time space which means we use it a lot on day trips to the coast ect. We use the drop down bed at night and the baby sleeps in a cot between the two rear benches. Storage seems plenty for us.

As this is my first motorhome, I don't have much to compare it to, but I can't say Elddis have high standards. We have had the bathroom resealed as the sealant was coming loose. Generally the sikaflex/silicone they use is very thin.

I had a hab check done and there was no damp. I also installed a gasit system and a TV at the front. I removed the TV aerial and fitted a 4G/5G antenna in its place.

Overall I'm very happy with it and look forward to this summer, looking at doing the NC500 when it warms up.

Great advice ...does that shower door/wall leak at all once it's closed ??

To be honest I've not used it yet - always used caravan club sites. Only thing we use it for is the baby, the sink plug fits the drain, so we fill it up and make a little baby bath. I've not noticed a gap though.

We have a 120 with what I think is a similar shower door arrangement. No problems with leaking from the door when using the shower.

Good choice I doubt you’ll regret it. Give us an update when you’ve had it a week or two. 👍

I bought a new Elddis caravan 4 years ago. After just one month's use, and at 5 months old there were the following faults:

1. Large chunk (5ft) of ceiling decoration fell off the ceiling
2. Microwave cupboard started to fall of the wall, was repaired, and started to fall off again.
3. 7 cupboard doors had come loose due to screws being overtightened.
4. All 4 bed support hinges came loose due to wrong screws being fitted.
5. Roof had dropped by 2cm in the middle, leaving a large puddle on the roof which nearly overflowed through a skylight.
6. + numerous other faults

Few months later saw the same model at the NEC, with several of the above faults evident, including the microwave cupboard and the sagging roof (you could push it up with one hand).

Elddis caravans and motorhomes are made in the same factory.

Do you really want to buy one????

You really think repairs would cover that lot? It would be months off the road with no guarantee of success, just as the microwave cupboard repair failed within 2 weeks. You would also need to have it repaired at the dealer you bought it from, no other Elddis dealer would touch it.

I used the Consumer Rights Act to get it rejected, and guess what? The large dealership I bought it from promptly sold it on rather than repair it. I wonder why?

Also Elddis are probably the only motorhome manufacturer to be still using a wooden framing technique whereas most others now use a tough plastic instead, which, of course, is rot proof when the dreaded sealant fails round one of the joints and damp gets in.

Hey ho, its your money, enjoy.

You're right ..I will .

Loads of Elddis on the road though. I remember when I picked up my 196, on the drive home I was overtaken by another 196, they slowed down to give me a wave!
